No clue. Wait for a while till someone knows about the GUI and can answer. Might be a while, people eat, sleep etc, so don't disconnect.

i found this. "Portable mode, save wallets + config to "storage" folder"
-
ndorf
i'm not sure, but i think portable mode is for when you want to keep your wallet on a removable drive or something. probably safe to leave it off unless you know you need it
-
Snowstorm
Well I do have an external drive
-
Snowstorm
Hmm
-
moneromooo
You want to sync to SSD if you can. Block I/O is a massive bottleneck.
-
Snowstorm
Okay I don't think I want to install it to my external drive
-
Snowstorm
I have 2 internal drives, 250GB (boot), and 1 TB (secondary)
-
Snowstorm
I will keep my wallet on my secondary, so if I'm installing a new OS or doing whatever it's seperate
-
ndorf
i think it's not just a question of whether the drive is removable, but whether or not you intend to move that removable drive with the wallet on it between different computers.
-
ndorf
i'm not 100% sure about that though. never tried the GUI myself.
-
Snowstorm
man why has no one here used GUI, that's literally the default
-
ndorf
the CLI is the default. the GUI is optional.
-
ndorf
it's just a matter of personal preference. personally, i like the CLI.
-
ndorf
lots of people use the GUI. it's just that they're all sleeping now :)
-
Snowstorm
GUI is listed first on the website, and just in general GUIs are the main way to use a program. but whatever
-
ndorf
they are? says who?
-
Snowstorm
99% of people who use computers in the last decade?
-
Snowstorm
Like, for typical computer users a CLI is black magic
-
ndorf
that doesn't seem to be a reason why *i* should use the GUI?
-
Snowstorm
I never said that
-
Snowstorm
I said "why has no one here used GUI, that's literally the default" and you said "the CLI is the default. the GUI is optional."
-
ndorf
ok, you're right, i shouldn't have said it's the default.
-
ndorf
the monero wallet CLI existed many years before the GUI did
-
Snowstorm
Ah
-
Snowstorm
So what happened to Gano
-
ndorf
but anyway. if you want a sure answer regarding the GUI, you'll have to wait until someone more familiar with it becomes available. if you don't want to wait, i think my guess above is probably right and you don't need portable mode unless you want to move the wallet around.
-
ndorf
what's Gano?
-
Snowstorm
You're just 'ndorf'
-
Snowstorm
Ganondorf lol
-
ndorf
lol, nice.
-
donkeydonkey[m]
i use the GUI sometimes and my wallet is on external and im not using Portable and it works fine. fwiw.

amuro
Hi, I have monero gui wallet and it does not start to sync, why? I am using simple mode.
-
amaran
hello
-
amaran
how to connect to node that port 80 open behind router (nat)
-
amaran
node to node
-
amaran
not wallet to node
-
Snowstorm
Um
-
Snowstorm
So I was setting up my wallet
-
Mochi101
ok
-
Snowstorm
And I was doing it where I make my own node instead of connecting to another
-
Snowstorm
And I just left the blockchain download location as "default
-
Snowstorm
I assumed it download on the drive I was running the wallet app on
-
Snowstorm
But apparently not!
-
Snowstorm
It installed it in my Home folder
-
Snowstorm
On my boot drive, which is much smaller than said other drive
-
Mochi101
Linux?
-
Snowstorm
Is it possible to move it after it's finished downloading and all that without redownloading it?
-
Snowstorm
Yes Linux Mint
-
Mochi101
yeah, no problem moving it. You can even move it from Linux to Windows without problems.
-
Snowstorm
Okay great
-
sech1
yes, just move it and use --data-dir command line parameter
-
Snowstorm
It's almost done now, 800 blocks remaining
-
Mochi101
~12 hour sync then?
-
sech1
you need to move /bitmonero/lmdb directory and all files in it
-
sech1
hmm, actually it's already non-standard path, but that's what I use
-
Snowstorm
sech yeah can't I just move the .bitmonero folder to the drive I want it on, then set the file path in the app? It looks like there's an option to set the file path
-
sech1
yes
-
Snowstorm
okay it worked
-
Snowstorm
The app is asking if I want to keep the node running the background. Should I do that?
-
Snowstorm
Well I GTG
-
Snowstorm
I don't see any reason to keep it running in the background, so Ill do No
-
jakoson0
Did you know that all witdraw-buyer-seller-depoist chains are trackable in Monero? No? You should have read Breaking Monero. How many people are you endangering with your 'privacy' coin?

skengdaddy
hello chaps, I saw what I suspect to be shilling in an article, is this now confirmed to be true or false?
darknetstats.com/us-department-of-h…bility-to-track-monero-transactions
-
charolastra
skengdaddy: if that old news were true the price of XMR would have aproached 0 already
-
skengdaddy
absolutely, is there any credible sources dismissing the rumour as nonsense?
-
moneromooo
Who knows. There's so much fuckery going on that it doesn't really follow. PR and lies drive prices, not facts.
-
skengdaddy
true, thanks guys
-
hyc
yes, there is a credible source who can disprove these rumors as nonsense. the CEO of CipherTrace himself.
twitter.com/davejevans/status/1330008956270374918
-
hyc
"Nobody can deterministically trace Monero transactions yet."
-
hyc
should prob add that to an FAQ at this point
-
Mochi102
++ hyc
-
moneromooo
hyd ?
-
Mochi102
moneromooo, :P
-
Mochi102
that'd be" hyc ++
-
moneromooo
No. hyc++ would evaluate as hyc.
-
Mochi102
Wouldn't increment?
-
moneromooo
It would.
-
moneromooo
Nevermind, just a subtle difference, doesn't matter.
-
Mochi102
I know what you mean, it's supposed to be symbolic.
-
ayahuaza
what does HOST [IP] BLOCKED mean?
-
ayahuaza
UNBLOCKED*
-
ayahuaza
srry
-
sethsimmons
<ayahuaza "what does HOST [IP] BLOCKED mean"> Just means the block timed out and there is not a reason to keep it blocked, currently.
-
Mochi102
ayahuaza, there's been some network problems lately and banning/blocking bad actors in the network is now mitigating it.
-
sethsimmons
Thats to be expected, and if the node is malicious or having issues your node will block it again as-needed.
-
Snowstorm
uh
-
Snowstorm
so I just set up my wallet yesterday
-
Snowstorm
seemed to work, I had to log off
-
Snowstorm
I open it today, and now it's stuck not not being able to connect to the daemon

hyc
is the daemon actually running?
-
Snowstorm
um
-
Snowstorm
Doesn't look like it
-
Snowstorm
what the heck
-
Snowstorm
yeah I tried restarted, nothing
-
Snowstorm
ughhhhh
-
Snowstorm
please I don't know what to dooo
-
donkeydonkey[m]
you can try start the daemon from the command line
-
Snowstorm
how? what command
-
donkeydonkey[m]
monerod --data-dir /path/to/blockchain
-
Snowstorm
"monerod: command not found"
-
donkeydonkey[m]
if you download it from getmonero then you will need to run it from the directory you saved it in. so the command from the correct directory would be ./monerod --data-dir ...
-
Snowstorm
uhhhhh donkey I copypasted that command while in the directory and its downloading the blockchain again!
-
Snowstorm
was the ... supposed to be the filepath to the blockchain!?
-
donkeydonkey[m]
did you specify the data-dir
-
Snowstorm
crap how do I stop it
-
donkeydonkey[m]
yes as in the command from above.
-
donkeydonkey[m]
ctrl c
-
Snowstorm
okay donkey I ran the command again, while in the directory, but this time specifcied the file path of the folder that contains lmdb

not sure... is it possibly a permissions problem?
-
Snowstorm
nope
-
Snowstorm
even as root, same issue. it can download the chain, but once it has it,
-
Snowstorm
Timed out, local node is not responding after 120 seconds.
-
Snowstorm
Please check your wallet and daemon log for errors. You can also try to start monerod manually.
-
sethsimmons
That looks like a corrupted DB
-
sethsimmons
Have you tried syncing from scratch?
-
Snowstorm
ugh
-
sethsimmons
Delete the entire .bitmonero folder and restart it
-
sethsimmons
Is this running on a local hard drive or an external one?
-
sethsimmons
Normal hard drive or SSD?
-
Snowstorm
SSD, secondary internal drive, Linux
-
sethsimmons
OK
-
Snowstorm
I deleted the folder, set the file path so it will download to the second drive instead of my Home folder, and restarted the sync
-
sethsimmons
I would personally start the sync over, seems like the DB is very corrupted
-
sethsimmons
<Snowstorm "I deleted the folder, set the fi"> Great
-
Snowstorm
I mean, maybe when I transferred it from my main drive to my second drive (since it downloaded there by default) but IDK
-
Snowstorm
Hopefully that was the problem...
-
ndorf
did you transfer it while monerod was still running? that would probably break it
-
Snowstorm
Uh...I don't...think so...?
-
Snowstorm
wow this is going fast
-
Snowstorm
It's already 1 third done
-
Snowstom
dang that "[user] quit" "[user] joined" spam is annoying
-
Snowstom
um
-
Snowstom
Are more recent blocks larger file sizes?
-
Snowstom
The app says I've downloaded about half the blocks
-
Snowstom
but I've only downloaded like 10GB
-
donkeydonkey[m]
yep
-
Snowstom
why is that?
-
hyc
early blocks were mostly empty.
-
hyc
then after ringCT was introduced, txn sizes blew up
-
hyc
everything since then has been a lot bigger
-
Snowstom
Well that would explain why it "goes so fast" at first then slows to a crawl...
-
Snowstom
What is the point of not using a Pruned Node if, according to getmonero: "There are no privacy or security downsides when using a pruned node."
-
raecarruth
you want to know the advnatges of a full node?
-
Snowstom
yeah
-
Snowstom
uh, rae?
-
gingeropolous
perhaps instead of blocks sync'd we should indicate # transactions verified / total
-
ayahuaza
hey i'll just begin mining monero, would you say that for a small miner, not a farm, is better to join mining pool or solo?
-
ayahuaza
as i understand it's better to join mining pool, just wanted to ask you guys/gals
-
gingeropolous
ayahuaza, id say it best to get your feet wet with a mining pool
-

then you can decide if you want to go full crazy and solo mine
