Snowstorm
why does the blockchain download get progressively slower, even after ringCT
-
Snowstorm
The last 20,000 are taking an eternity
-
hyc
more txns
-
hyc
usage has gone up
-
Snowstorm
txns?
-
hyc
transactions
-
hyc
more transactions per block
-
Snowstorm
Ah
-
Snowstorm
Well maybe they should make the progress bar on file size not amount of blocks >.<
-
hyc
the gui has no way to know the total size
-
hyc
it only knows the count of blocks
-
Snowstorm
couldn't it just ping getmonero
-
Snowstorm
or just code in "after block [number] increase enstimated file size"
-
Snowstorm
And it would be pretty accurate
-
h2017
i don't see why it can't at least use the usual progress bar bag of tricks. it can start doing a running average of block processing times
-
Snowstorm
UHHHHH
-
Snowstorm
so after the blockchain was finished downloading
-
Snowstorm
I close the program
-
Snowstorm
It asks if I want to keep the daemon running in the background
-
Snowstorm
I'm like "okay sure"
-
Snowstorm
I restart my computer and open it again
-
Snowstorm
"Couldn't open wallet: internal errror: "file/path/walletname.keys" is opened by another wallet program"
-
qagmire007[m]
lol
-
qagmire007[m]
xmr is rekted
-
qagmire007[m]
had a good short tho
-
ndorf
cool story bro.
-
h2017
#monero-markets
-
ndorf
h2017: it's a troll
-
qagmire007[m]
us restrictions may rekt this coin tho
-
qagmire007[m]
if 125 is broken this is coin is totally ruined
-
ndorf
what restrictions?
-
qagmire007[m]
US may block privacy coins
-
ndorf
source?
-
h2017
don't talk about price in this chan
-
h2017
take this convo to #monero-markets
-
qagmire007[m]
and guess what xmr sticks to good standards and doesn’t offer an option to disable untraceable transactions
-
qagmire007[m]
okay sorry
-
ndorf
lol, XMR will never offer that option.
-
ndorf
what reason is there to believe that US would block or ban XMR?
-
h2017
ndorf if they did many coins would be affected since many are acquiring privacy features
-
qagmire007[m]
lol search bruh i’m not revealing a top secret fbi document
-
ndorf
ah, so no basis in reality whatsoever. just FUD. like i said cool story bro
-
h2017
including bitcoin litecoin, bitcoin cash and doubtless many others that aren't specifically privacy coins
-
qagmire007[m]
<h2017 "ndorf if they did many coins wou"> exactly, in fact LTC are planning to adopt mimblewimble algorithm
-
qagmire007[m]
<h2017 "including bitcoin litecoin, bitc"> no bitcoin doesn’t offer that same anonymity as monero
-
h2017
so imagine all the people un the us being told they couldn't legally trade or transact in those coins unless they hard forked in with the priv features stripped out
-
h2017
that's what it would come to
-
qagmire007[m]
<h2017 "ndorf if they did many coins wou"> loool just search by yourself.
-
h2017
but i woudldn't put such an edict past western governments, but it's not likely to happen tommorrow
-
ndorf
i'm in the US and transact in Monero, as well as Monero<->fiat, regularly. no one has complained.\
-
h2017
ndorf i know. there is not law or regulation that singles out privacy coins
-
h2017
i'm just imagining what it would be like if there was
-
qagmire007[m]
<ndorf "i'm in the US and transact in Mo"> they obviously cannot stop you. they just would prevent exchanges and institutional from paying/getting xmr
-
qagmire007[m]
but this would raise an eyebrows especially from irs side.
-
ndorf
i submit dozens of pages with "Monero" all over them to the IRS every year. no issues there, either.
-
Snowstorm
You have GOT to be kidding me
-
Snowstorm
I'm just using a remote node
-
Snowstorm
screw this shit
-
ndorf
what happened?
-
Snowstorm
So after it finished redownloading the blockchain
-
Snowstorm
I was like okay, it seems to be working
-
Snowstorm
I went to close the program
-
Snowstorm
It asked if I wanted to keep the daemon running in the background
-
Snowstorm
I said yes
-
Snowstorm
I restarted my PC
-
Snowstorm
I open the wallet again
-
Snowstorm
And it said another wallet program already had that .keys open
-
ndorf
is this windows, linux or something else?
-
Snowstorm
Linux
-
Snowstorm
well I tried copying it to a different folder and opening that
-
Snowstorm
it seemed to work
-
Snowstorm
but then the blockchain filepath was messed up?
-
Snowstorm
It was trying to download it again
-
Snowstorm
so I set the filepath again
-
Snowstorm
And
-
Snowstorm
"Failed to start the daemon"
-
Snowstorm
"Failed to start the daemon"
-
Snowstorm
"Failed to start the daemon"
-
Snowstorm
"Failed to start the daemon"
-
Snowstorm
"Failed to start the daemon"
-
ndorf
that is bizarre. is there anything interesting in the daemon log?
-
ndorf
are we absolutely sure the daemon isn't running twice? `ps auxww | fgrep monerod` ?
-
Snowstorm
only one instance
-
ndorf
hm, sounds like one is already running and you're trying to start a second one?
-
ndorf
you could cleanly stop that one and try again, but it's probably better to figure out why the first one isn't doing what you want
-
ndorf
`ps auxww` should show you all the parameters. is the correct --data-dir specified there?
-
ndorf
(blockchain path)
-
Snowstorm
just 'ps auxww'?
-
Snowstorm
made a ton of stuff pop up
-
ndorf
| grep monerod
-
Snowstorm
encrypt+ 4894 0.0 0.0 8900 736 pts/0 S+ 20:46 0:00 grep -F --color=auto monerod
-
Snowstorm
thats all it says
-
ndorf
ok, so there are 0 instances. does it still give you the Failed to start error if you try now?
-
ndorf
and if so, can you find the bitmonero.log file and see what errors if any are in there?
-
ndorf
should be under whatever your data-dir is
-
Snowstorm
I deleted it all
-
Snowstorm
im making a new wallet
-
VashTheStampede
d
-
VashTheStampede
seems like mymonero dont work
-
-
Snowstorm
whats a goodnodetoonncetto
-
ndorf
node.xmr.to:18081 or node.moneroworld.com:18089, off the top of my head. there are surely others
-
ndorf
VashTheStampede: what issue are you having with MyMonero?
-
ndorf
VashTheStampede: what issue are you having with MyMonero?
-
Snowstorm
um so after I remade my wallet and all that it seems to be working, i deleted everything except that golder that ahs t he blockchain and reloaded that. I'm afarid if I close the gi and open it again it won't work ._.
-
ndorf
Snowstorm: i wish i could promise that it will work, but without knowing what the problem even was, i can't do that. however, if you write down the seed words and keep them in a safe place, you will never lose any funds no matter what. you can always restore the wallet from those seed words.
-
Snowstorm
well the wallet is empty
-
Snowstorm
so I'm not worried about that
-
ndorf
right, well presumably it won't stay that way
-
Snowstorm
yeah
-
Snowstorm
okay I'm going to close the GUI and open it again
-
Snowstorm
and if it doesn't work
-
Snowstorm
I'm switching to remote node
-
ndorf
remote node will work fine, as long as you don't try to restore an ancient wallet
-
ndorf
as for figuring out what went wrong with your setup, you probably want someone knowledgeable about the GUI in particular to help with that. if you have no luck here, try reddit.com/r/monerosupport -- it's quite active
-
ndorf
of course you could always try the CLI ;)
-
Snowstorm
oh
-
» ndorf ducks
-
Snowstorm
YES
-
Snowstorm
IT FRICKING WORKED
-
Snowstorm
I closed and opened it
-
Snowstorm
and it didn't crap out this time
-
ndorf
glad to hear it.
-
Snowstorm
Can you try sending me like 5 cents or something to make sure it's working right?

fluffydonkey[m]
Has anyone tried running a node and wallet-rpc-server on an Amazon Graviton (ARM) server? Did it work out of the box?
-
M7361[m]
-
endor00[m]
I just got two error messages while syncing up my node: `Transaction spends at least one output which is too young`
-
endor00[m]
Does that refer to the transactions contained in the blocks I'm syncing, or does it refer to one in the mempool?
-
endor00[m]
Could it be that a tx picked a ring member that is too young? Or will it still get rejected by protocol?
-
moneromooo
It doesn't say. Ignore that.
-
moneromooo
It just got rejected, it told you that.
-
moneromooo
I'll move those messages to non default someday.
-
endor00[m]
Ok, it wasn't clear whether it was referring to the blocks I was syncing or to a tx in the mempool
-
moneromooo
What's the difference ?
-
endor00[m]
Such a tx in a block is getting confirmations, which would be a violation of protocol, while such tx in the transaction mempool is just a sign that someone is futzing with their client
-
endor00[m]
(Or rather: it would imply a violation in the intent of the protocol, since we introduced the 10 confirmations requirement for spending a while back)
-
presentjack[m]
hi
-
gingeropolous
moneroaddress.org still good, right?
-
gingeropolous
hi presentjack[m]
-
ErCiccione[m]
gingeropolous: AFAIK yes

bgzto00
FIY, you want to know why you are getting those daily messages? Cults NEED to control information. That's why people like lh1008 get savagly attacked (also called disconnection) for even talking to me. Break the information embargo, break the cult. Who would sign up to Scientology if they knew from the get-go that is is about a sci-fi alien overlord? Who would sign up to MAGA if they knew what a loser Trump is?
-
bgzto00
You don't sign up to MAGA to do a failed Viking LARP and some time off in club fed. You sign up because you feel like shit and they promise to give you self-respect. It is a total lie of course, you are still a joke even when cosplaying a Viking. Just like Monero's promise of privacy is a lie.
-
gagdenfren
hey ya'll, been unable to connect to remote nodes over gui on Qubes. What gives?
-
gagdenfren
anyone else having this issue?
-
gagdenfren
It just sits on "Network status: Connecting"
-
selsta
does Qubes use Tor?
-
gagdenfren
yep, but this Qube I have setup is over clearnet
-
selsta
which remote node did you try?
-
selsta
your own or a public one?
-
gagdenfren
so far ive tried node.moneroworld.com and uwillrunanodesoon.moneroworld.com
-
gagdenfren
public ones
-
gagdenfren
not my own
-
gagdenfren
normally they work just fine, never had an issue
-
selsta
gingeropolous: ^
-
selsta
gagdenfren: try a non moneroworld one
-
gagdenfren
alright lets give it a go
-
selsta
e.g. node.xmr.to:18081 node.supportxmr.com:18081
-
gingeropolous
gagdenfren, i've noticed during high network load that you need patience with remote nodes
-
gingeropolous
how long did you wait before you bailed and tried a different one?
-
gagdenfren
im trying this node atm - node.supportxmr.com
-
gingeropolous
yeah selsta , my poor uwillrunanodesoon has 120 rpc cnxns currently
-
gagdenfren
how long? idk normally within minutes I guess
-
gingeropolous
i need to do that haproxy load balancing ive been talking about
-
gingeropolous
yeah, try node.supportxmr.co and node.xmr.to
-
gingeropolous
er, .com on the first one, ure already trin it
-
selsta
gingeropolous: is uwillrunanodesoon.moneroworld.com inside gdb currently?
-
gingeropolous
yep
-
gagdenfren
how long should it take to connect to a remote node?
-
gingeropolous
it should be less than 20 seconds. if the node is slammed, can be a minute
-
gingeropolous
im bout to change the url to runafuckingnodeforchrissakes.moneroworld.com
-
gagdenfren
oh okay that helps
-
selsta
gagdenfren: node.xmr.to:18081/get_info works here
-
gagdenfren
yep that node doesnt work
-
gagdenfren
so its something on my end then
-
selsta
node.xmr.to:18081 also does not work for you?
-
gagdenfren
not sure why though. I downloaded the latest gui version
-
gagdenfren
uh im pretty sure i was using it
-
gagdenfren
i'll double check
-
moneromooo
I guess Qubes like privacy, prevents you from doing the wrong thing :) (assuming the remote node isn't yours, which it usually isn't)
-
gagdenfren
im just resetting my moner oqube
-
gingeropolous
lol moneromooo
-
gagdenfren
haha nah qubes will still let you give away ur privacy if you want
-
gingeropolous
mebbe its firewalling outgoing cnxns?
-
moneromooo
Seriously, it's like telling some random "hey, here's my secret, don't tell anyone".
-
gagdenfren
yeah i am concerned about some firewalling, so im rerouting it past the firewall and resetting the qube
-
gagdenfren
Qubes is da best OS tho, if you aint using it I highly recommend it
-
gagdenfren
whonix is so great with tor :D
-
gagdenfren
EY IM IN
-
gagdenfren
Damn, it was probably the firewall doin some weird shit
-
gagdenfren
even though this qube has no firewalling
-
gagdenfren
im connected through node.xmr.to
-
gagdenfren
cheers guys
-
selsta
gagdenfren: there are also issues with high traffic remote nodes not accepting new connections
-
gagdenfren
ah
-
gagdenfren
welp, eitherway im in
-
gingeropolous
<moneromooo> Seriously, it's like telling some random "hey, here's my secret, don't tell anyone". >>> well, isn't that sorta similar to pushing a tx on the p2p network without tor/i2p?
-
gingeropolous
i.e., the first to receive your tx in dandelion is a rando
-
gingeropolous
i mean yeah, the rando has no way to know that its *your* tx
-
gingeropolous
which i guess is the difference
-
gingeropolous
i guess a hack would be to use the rpc to gather and construct the tx, and then disconnect from that rpc daemon, then reconnect to the p2p network to push as a normal node
-
gingeropolous
which is kinda what the GUI does now mebbe
-
gingeropolous
but that seems pretty silly. if it comes through via p2p, you can assume its not the senders. but if it comes through via rpc, it is the senders
-
gingeropolous
so.... just push through p2p connection?
-
gingeropolous
ugh someone matrix c++ coding skills into my brain
-
moneromooo
To some extent, but not the full extent. We removed a number of leaks from wallet to daemon, but it's really wasting time on stuff we should not have to.
-
moneromooo
I guess I'm just annoyed that people just don't give a shit.
-
sethsimmons
Don't care about running their own nodes? Or don't care about wallet data leakage?
-
Barbelo[m]1
sethsisin smmons since you use copperheados what is your opinion on them registering grapheneos.ca and grapheneos.net and redirected them to their site as well as making legal threats to grapheneos devs? :)
-
gingeropolous
i mean, if its not monero GUI users using remote nodes, they'd use either mymonero (stores viewkey), i guess cakewallet (runs their own remote node infra?), or keep their monero on exchanges
-
Barbelo[m]1
* sethsisin smmons since you use copperheados what is your opinion on them registering grapheneos.ca and grapheneos.net and redirecting them to their site as well as making legal threats to grapheneos devs? :)

obvi the last option is the worst, and the other 2 are .... better?
-
sethsimmons
<gingeropolous "i mean, if its not monero GUI us"> Cake defaults to their nodes but can use any.
-
gingeropolous
than some rando?
-
sethsimmons
And includes other community nodes that are already included with a single tap.
-
sethsimmons
<gingeropolous "than some rando?"> Probably, yeah
-
sethsimmons
Thats why I'm trying hard to simplify the process of running your own node
-
sethsimmons
Ideally we need a cheap plug-and-play solution, but simple VPS nodes via Ansible/Docker is a good interim IMO.
-
gingeropolous
so centralized services are better than some rando?
-
sethsimmons
Centralized and generally trusted, yes IMO
-
sethsimmons
I would never recommend MyMonero though
-
sethsimmons
But trusting a remote node without exposing view key is fine if not ideal.
-
sethsimmons
But I always would point people to run their own node.
-
selsta
MyMonero has use cases
-
gingeropolous
<sethsimmons> But I always would point people to run their own node. >>. yeah obvi
-
gingeropolous
i wonder what the friction points are at this point
-
sethsimmons
For sure, I just can't recommend them myself. Not a fan of exposing view key for any reason personally.
-
gingeropolous
gagden damn we lost him
-
selsta
sethsimmons: ideally you would run your own mymonero node
-
sethsimmons
<gingeropolous "i wonder what the friction point"> Difficulty to run at home.
-
sethsimmons
We need to have a simple GUI for running a node as a taskbar/tray service

Barbelo[m]1

-
sethsimmons
<selsta "sethsimmons: ideally you would r"> Is that.. easy?
-
gingeropolous
sethsimmons, so its always on?
-
sethsimmons
I've never tried but that type of light-wallet server would be nice if simple to setup.
-
sethsimmons
<gingeropolous "sethsimmons, so its always on?"> Yes, and starts at boot etc.
-
selsta
sethsimmons: vtnerd's light wallet server is as easy as running a normal node once you have it compiled
-
selsta
but this is all a bit early so issues still happen
-
endor00[m]
<gingeropolous "i wonder what the friction point"> Mostly the fact that you have to sync both a node AND the wallet. For someone who has no concept of what a block height is, that's a double whammy to start off
-
sethsimmons
Once you're done with IBD resource usage is not noticeable IMO.
-
sethsimmons
<endor00[m] "Mostly the fact that you have to"> Yes, all the more reason people need to have an easy to run always-on node, so they only have to worry about wallet sync
-
sethsimmons
Then long-term implement light-wallet server on your own node for no/fast wallet sync on top of that.
-
sethsimmons
Might post on Reddit about this idea, actually, see if anyone is interested
-
endor00[m]
Trouble is, most people don't have devices running 24/7 that aren't a phone or a router
-
sethsimmons
Most people
-
endor00[m]
Nor the concept of running a pc 24/7 in general
-
sethsimmons
* Most people have a desktop or laptop that is on most of the time, IMO
-
sethsimmons
So start on boot monerod is enough to remove the UX hurdle IMO
-
endor00[m]
Sure, but then the complaints of "my pc is super slow when booting" will start rolling in
-
endor00[m]
So if we want to go that way, we'd have to have a default setup that only uses like 1 core and minimizes impact on system performance
-
sethsimmons
It would only cause a minor resource sink right when started up but can constrain bandwidth/CPU
-
endor00[m]
* laughs in no data caps *
-
sethsimmons
It wouldn't expose RPC externally or open up incoming connections by default, so data usage isn't a concern after IBD.
-
gingeropolous
the .... womp womp of this is probably not many people need something up to transact every day
-
gingeropolous
like, this sort of setup would be ideal for a merchant
-
sethsimmons
Sad, but true for now
-
sethsimmons
But we need to get ahead of real usage
-
donkeydonkey[m]
<gingeropolous "the .... womp womp of this is pr"> but if its not synced and they go to use it and its gotta sync for a couple hours.... that kinda sucks

it will be quite a bit of work as you have to program for every OS separately most likely
-
selsta
C++ Windows, Objective C / Swift for Mac, and don’t know if Linux even has a standard for system tray icons
-
sethsimmons
In that case would probably need a contributor per platform, in theory.
