vcotroni
is this the right channel to ask support on monero?
-
binaryFate
vcotroni: yes
-
selsta
vcotroni: do you have a transaction id?
-
vcotroni
I had to move my XMR out of Bitrex because of the delisting, and I tried to move them into my ledger. transaction is successful .. yes 1 sec :)
-
selsta
ok, don’t have to share it
-
selsta
just make sure it shows up on xmrchain.net
-
selsta
can you go to Settings -> Info inside the GUI and share which wallet mode you are using
-
vcotroni

Also which "Wallet restore height" do you have inside Settings -> Info?
-
vcotroni
Wallet restore height is: 20210101 (Change)
-
selsta
ok, that is the problem

selsta
click on change and enter 2021-01-01

changed it,.. but for some reason is not dispalyed,.. neither the name of the field("wallet restore height" nor the changed field :(
-
vcotroni
it mentioned something about the cache,.. do i need to do something else?
-
vcotroni
tried also to go out and enter again, but did not help
-
selsta
change it, then click ok twice
-
vcotroni
(sorry I meant loggin out of the wallet and reopen it)
-
selsta
afterwards tell me which number is inside wallet restore height field
-
selsta
also which "wallet mode" are you using? it also displayed on the Info page
-
vcotroni
wallet mode is Simple mode
-
vcotroni
selsta: unfortunately I get no number in "wallet restore height"
-
selsta
Ok, let’s try one more time: Click on "(Change)" next to wallet restore height field, enter the number 2265200, then click on okay twice. Then wait a couple minutes until the wallet refreshed.
-
vcotroni
selsta: FYI I only got one OK (not sure if that helps)
-
vcotroni
will wait and see..
-
selsta
It should be one ok when entering the number and one ok when accepting the message with the wallet cache.
-
vcotroni
i think is doing something,.. the height was set to 2244148 and the bar with the blocks remaning is updating :)
-
selsta
ok let’s hope it is showing up now
-
vcotroni
selsta: YESSSSSS :)

Hello, just wanted to ask a quick question: Can I point several solo-miners to one Node? I don't want to setup a pool.
-
hyc
yes but you probably would be better off putting xmrig-proxy in front of the node
-
hyc
just to make sure search space is divided evenly
-
skrech
ah, thank you very much hyc
-
skrech
Hey again, where can I find whitepaper or explanaition in detail about how how Proof-of-Work is working? Is it different than for Bitcoin? I guess so, so something Monero-specific will be great.
-
moneromooo
The PoW hash algorithm itself is (very) different, but the overall system is the same.
-
moneromooo
You hash repeatedly till the result gets you a hash below a target which is based on the timings of the blocks that came before it.
-
moneromooo
If you're asking about the hash itself, see
github.com/tevador/RandomX
-
skrech
Thanks, I'm more interested in the components involved/architecture. Not that much into the mathematical details. For example, what are the relationships between miners, nodes, pools, etc? What are the boundries separating them apart, how are they communicating, etc. In simple words, I want to understand what is xmrig-proxy actually doing? What is its interaction with nodes? What consitutes the P2P
-
skrech
functionality, and what the RPC part, so I can exaplin what is RPC-Pay. This kind of information. I guess it won't be on one place, but where to start? :)

anchor[m]
I've read an interview with one of Chainalysis' devs and it sounds like it's that

their way to crack monero is by targeting other weaknesses in the user's opsec

Could some of the Monero gurus please take a look at the monerod config by Seth S at
sethsimmons.me/guides/run-a-monero-node and let me know if any other settings should be used for a public node? (note: only the monerod.conf I'll take care of all the other settings, sysctl, systemd, firewall iptables+ipsets etc)
-
monerouser1144
I think that the ideal way to improve Monero network resilience against future attacks would be to auto-deploy hardened nodes on dedicated servers (bare metal) and increase the number of public rpc using reverse proxies.
-
monerouser1144
I don't think that running a local monerod will be a viable alternative for 90% of the non-expert users.

i'm trying to run the miner on an 8GB Rpi 4B. with some advice from moneromooo, i compiled my own kernel with hugepages enabled. however, it's still saying `Couldn't allocate RandomX dataset for miner`. anyone have any other ideas on what's going on or how to diagnose it?
-
ndorf
r3dh3ad[m]: not sure, but i think in addition to enabling huge page support at kernel compile time, you also need to enable a given number of them with `sysctl`
-
monerouser1144
r3dh3ad[m] afaik mining XMR is only worth it on newer AMD Ryzen CPUs, even if you have free electricity.
-
monerouser1144
But running a node on RasPi 4 should be OK
-
ndorf
e.g.: `sysctl -w vm.nr_hugepages=1536`
-
r3dh3ad[m]
monerouser1144: yeah i know. i'm mostly doing it for the lulz. i don't actually expect to get much out of it. i'm already running a full node. might as well put that pi to work. :)

ndorf
or `echo vm.nr_hugepages >> /etc/sysctl.conf && sysctl --system` to make it persistent
-

err

-
happyfr0gg
Does the blockchain.raw file contain the same synced data as monerod?
-
-
moneromooo
It contains *part* of the data monerod needs.
-
happyfr0gg
How do I update the blockchain.raw file so it is current?
-
Adamas[m]
I want to deepen my knowledge of cryptography. In the last few years I self taught myself calculus/linear algebra/physics and python/bash/vba. Any recommendations on where to start?
-
moneromooo
You sync monerod, then run monero-blockchain-export. If your intent is to then import it, it makes it moot.
-
happyfr0gg
So I understand correctly. After monerod is done syncing successfully I run monero-blockchain-export will give me the same blockchain.raw file with all data insync?
-
moneromooo
A larger file, containing the same data in the first part, and more data at the end.
-
happyfr0gg
what file will result from the command monero-blockchain-export?
-
moneromooo
A larger file, containing the same data in the first part, and more data at the end.
-
moneromooo
But you probably don't want to use that. Most people don't need it.
-
moneromooo
Letting monerod sync normally is probably what you want.
-
happyfr0gg
Will it be a new blockchain.raw file that has been updated with more data at the end, as you say?
-
happyfr0gg
I was thinking about having all of my Monero transactions complete via a node saved on a physical thumb stick I plug into my smartphone when out and about. For more security and anonymity I did not want to use a remote node.
-
h2017
how come people want to run nodes on their phones instead of on a server (or dedicated device) at home?
-
h2017
is communication over the internet between a wallet and a node secure (without ssh)?
-
moneromooo
Without ssh, no. With ssh, probably (just set your server and clients to whitelist key fingerprints).
-
moneromooo
s/ssh/ssl/g
-
h2017
has there been any thought to building in the security, just because it will mean more user-friendliness, even if the devels otherwise consider it out of scope
-
moneromooo
No, we never thought about security. I don't even what the word means come to think of it.
-
h2017
hehe. i mean are there plans to make ssh unnecessary?
-
moneromooo
ssh is not necessary, so you're confusing me.
-
h2017
it's necessary to keep node/wallet communication secure
-
h2017
over the public internet
-
moneromooo
Do you mean ssh or ssl ?
-
h2017
oh so there is tls security now?
-
h2017
i didn't know
-
happyfr0gg
h2017, to answer your first question, completing transactions through a node saved on a thumbstick eliminates MITM attacks and discoverability of transactions between parties.
-
moneromooo
The wallet can use SSL to connect to the daemon.
-
h2017
ok that's all i need to know. thanks. so there is built in security for those who set it up
-
h2017
fwiw postgrest doesn't have built in security. they just expect you to proxy it behind a more fully-fledged webserver
-
h2017
it wouldn't be the first time that the devels wouldn't implement something
-
h2017
ok so if you you are prepated to set up ssl, why would you worry about MITM attacks in that case?
-
happyfr0gg
prepated?
-
h2017
prepared
-
happyfr0gg
Having a monero node saved on a thumbstick removes the possibility of that node being discovered by anyone (thanks to the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act and Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency hosting companies can be pressured to disclose data on their customers).
-
gingeropolous
heh. gonna be interesting when the gauntlet comes down and you have to prove where your monero came from to interact with conventional banking and well... you can mine monero from thin air.
-
h2017
you think they will start building up files on people just because it can be proven they they run a node?
-
h2017
they = governments/LE/NSA
-
moneromooo
People who can be proven to run a node are a subset of people, so yes.
-
fibonacci
Why do all these "blockchain giants" use a centralized heavily moderated server like Twitter exactly?
-
moneromooo
I'm fairly certain the NSA at least has a db with data about everyone they can get info on. Maybe not US persons but that's not a bet I'd make.
-
moneromooo
They have the means and the motive.
-
fibonacci
Definitely US
-
moneromooo
Now, how much and what data, I have no idea :)
-
