rottensox you have a time index on snowden talking about monero?
-
knaccc
i'm a java programmer, not a C++ programmer, so I did the i2p-zero java stuff only. others with a C++ background were working on the GUI integration, and I don't know what the status there is
-
rottensox
knaccc: not really, but i do try to listen to all of his appearances...
-
knaccc
rottensox i found the bit where he mentions bitcoin
-
knaccc
he doesn't mention monero by name there
-
rottensox
no...
-
knaccc
did he actually say "monero"?
-
rottensox
he mentions monero in the Q&A, towards the end.
-
rottensox
yes.
-
knaccc
ah ok
-
rottensox
it is a good talk all around. at least i loved it.
-
knaccc
oh i found it 45:46
-
knaccc
i wonder what he's talking about, re: community management
-
knaccc
i always thought monero's community was its strongest part
-
sgp_
Hmm, I wish he was more specific. It's hard to use the statement as constructive feedback
-
gingeropolous
that sounds like a critique one makes when there's nothing technical to critique :P
-
gingeropolous
having not watched the clip. i'll let myself out.

knaccc: "dammit jim, i'm a java programmer, not a C++ programmer"
-
xmrmatterbridge
<cankerwort> Thanks for sharing that rottensox. That throwaway comment was a hilarious way of summing up the project. I'd be curious to know what he based that on
-
knaccc
ajs[m] haha

<xmrhaelan> I think if someone like Snowden is making a critique like that it’s worth investigating further. Isn’t he a Zcash advocate? Is there something Zcash does for community management that we aren’t doing?
-
hyc
doesn't zooko invite random community members to his house for a steak dinner?
-
Inge-
hyc: I'm still waiting on an invite for dinner and violin concerto
-
Inge-
xmrhaelan: yeah would be interesting to engage with him. At least he didn't call it "amateur crypto". This time.
-
hyc
re: that amateur crypto comment - always possible he was just that uninformed. it's not like we have a professional ad agency working for us
-
binaryFate
snowden is quite close to some zcash people, his old judgement that monero is amateur crypto is literally to be taken as "not developed by a company"
-
binaryFate
opposing amateur vs. professional. It's dumb because by this standard would you call academic research "amateur"?
-
binaryFate
And also it interprets the grassroot aspect of Monero has a drawback while it is very much a strength
-
sarang
The fact that ECC is a company has been a big part of the ongoing Zcash funding kerfuffle
-
sarang
And that has occupied a lot of time and attention for them for quite some time
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> binaryFate good point. It’s rather confusing that Snowden wouldn’t see the value in a more decentralized open-source approach. I suspect it will just be time and maturity of the Monero ecosystem that changes his views.

gingeropolous
what the shit. is bitcoin developed by a company?
-
gingeropolous
brain hurt

BitCo (tm)

It kinda cuts both ways, the company method is a highly evolved shark, it's demonstrated to be efficient. On the other hand, I've thought that Monero attracted "unhireables" meaning people who's conscience isn't for hire, who only want hard problems that may or may not be profitable economically.
-
thunderosa
I've envied the ECC budget,...but not for very long. Dumb budgets lead to dumb thinking.
-
hyc
encouraging a heavy burn rate is never a good thing
-
hyc
* this I've learned from my own startup experiences
-
thunderosa
oh those were some heady days :)
-
thunderosa
never again....dear god, never again.
