Here's an example of someone who finds Monero "interesting" but not "that interesting." How can we get people who are interested to make the leap and fell confident talking about it and participating in the community?

not covering alts on a Bitcoin show is one thing, but not wanting to show up on Monero Talk is another
-
sarang
I'm sure what makes something interesting to that person may not be what makes it interesting to someone else

Applications, technical stuff, etc.

sarang: perhaps, but even if they don't advocate for it all the time, how do we encourage them to meet people in the community, ask questions, and otherwise get involved?
-
sgp_
there's a lot of surrounding talk about how Monero is cool, but little genuine involvement
-
xmrmatterbridge
<learninandlurkin> I think they find the privacy stuff less interesting from a "if you've got nothing to hide" perspective, but a return of egalitarian and decentralised mining via RandomX might get some maxi attention.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<learninandlurkin> But there isn't much news on how much of a gamechanger RX is filtering through to bitcoiners at this stage
-
xmrmatterbridge
<learninandlurkin> We may have to wait for the point where people start telling them "I'm mining on my pc for profit again!" to get some word of mouth marketing
-
Inge-
a top end consumer CPU makes what, a buck a day?
-
sgp_
learninandlurkin: is egalitarian CPU mining something they care about? Most people who speak about RandomX are pretty critical of it
-
sgp_
or at least are critical of Monero's PoW decisions so far
-
xmrmatterbridge
<learninandlurkin> I thought bitcoiners cared about decentralisation and censorship resistance. Or maybe it was just lambos....
-
sgp_
learninandlurkin they generally advocate for it strongly, but they would probably disagree with Monero's chosen route
-
xmrmatterbridge
<learninandlurkin> Tbh I think the vast majority of bitcoiners aren't even aware of RandomX. Or dynamic blocksize. Or that a XMR transation is only (5?) times bigger than a BTC transaction these days. Or of how low fees are. Or i2p & tor support.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<learninandlurkin> I think Monero Talk is a fantastic project for gettinf this stuff out there with really high quality interviews, but the guy needs some heavy marketing and maybe a tiny bit more technical knowledge
-
gingeropolous
agreed. sometimes im listening to em and im like man i wish i was there to say something
-
sgp_
Getting people to go on Monero Talk is typically a good time since they otherwise wouldn't ever research/learn anything

Defcon 27 videos are now available on the Defcon media server

-
sgp_
I'm checking to see if any are missing
-
sgp_
only 15 are there, so likely? need to confirm with the original schedule
-
sgp_
there is *maybe* only 1 missing (1 of Allan Stevo's 2)
-
sgp_
everything else is there

mastodon?

mebbe they perceive that mastodon is growing? frankly I haven't seen that happen

I heard twitter used to have a very open API, and then kept tightening down on it

Sooooo what to make of this sudden turnabout...

yes, they did

I think people are starting to become aware that there is stifled/chilled speech, and the direction is scary
-
sarang
I have little hope when profit-seeking companies push open standards to get support, and then close them off to make money
-
hyc
the tweet thread tells me that they're tired of the pressure to censor fake political ads
-
hyc
by decentralizing they can completely abdicate responsibility
-
needmonero90
stifled/chilled speech, and the enforcement has been offloaded to the platforms
-
xmrmatterbridge
<learninandlurkin> Surely if they become a client of an open protocol trying to give people a "healthy experience" that gives them more moderation responsibility?

they changed the requirements to be able to use the api and now it's harder for you to own your posts and syndicate them to twitter

it's frustrating that the quality of the defcon recordings are so bad
-
sgp_
25 fps, ~400 kbps
-
sgp_
mono audio at 49 kbps lol
-
sgp_
for reference, the konferenco livestream was 9000 kbps, 1080p, 60 fps
-
geonic
24fps is good enough for cinemas.. the resolution/kbps is the killer here
-
sgp_
indeed, a 400 kbps video won't look good even with the best compression
-
geonic
I'll forgive the video if the audio is good.. 49 kbps mono would be good for streaming on dial-up
