I just had a really stupid thought. I know it practically doesn't matter but imagine if Monero had a blockchain that was able to do transactions as fast as another cryptocurrency such as Solana. It would be better at scale but that's just a day dream. Most people using Monero don't seem to care about processing times and honestly, I don't either. I just had a dumb thought and thought I should share that dumb thought.
-
anon_82641[m]
Solana will have privacy tech, can't remember what anatoly said they were looking at. Some form of STARKS. Whatever they will do will be for corporations like jp morgan. No threat to monero. Monero transactions are fast < 15s with 0-conf.
-
anon_82641[m]
And lightning will come to monero eventually

Very true. I think most places that accept Monero require somewhere around 3 to 5 confirmations.

Do US regulations make it impossible to buy Monero? I haven't seen it on trading platforms or coinbase.
-
sethsimmons
No
-
sethsimmons
You can buy at Kraken and some other smaller exchanges
-
sethsimmons
There are no US regulations that prohibit it from being listed or sold by completely "compliant" exchanges.
-
sethsimmons
Coinbase chooses to ignore it do to investments in other tokens or some vague fear that is not real.
-
sethsimmons
Same with Gemini etc.
-
asdfqwerqwer23
I think I looked into kraken but it doesn't allow payment methods from the US.
-
asdfqwerqwer23
Oh, they only allow wires.
-
sethsimmons
Yes, they allow multiple methods now
-
sethsimmons
They even have some new method that has higher fees but is faster than a wire.
-
asdfqwerqwer23
Very inconvenient. Why can't they just be normal like Coinbase? :P
-
endor00[m]
Who said Coinbase is normal? (Whatever "normal" may actually mean)
-
moneromooo
If an exchange has zcash but not monero, you can deduce the issue is not legal.
-
binaryFate
GUI v0.17.2.2 is out on getmonero.org

All nodes take part in transaction propagation AFAIK, unless they are offline or not synced.
-
sethsimmons
I could be wrong though 🙂
-
botcoinnotbot[m]
another quick question from a noob, I set up a few nodes using your guide. I was just wondering if I remotely connect to them using the GUI that the connection is encrypted by default?
-
sethsimmons
I do believe that the GUI uses SSL by default, but maybe selsta can chime in?
-
sethsimmons
(Or anyone with knowledge of that)
-
sethsimmons
<botcoinnotbot[m] "another quick question from a no"> The best way for secure comms would be to use a Tor HiddenService and connect to that using Torsocks or directly via a wallet like Feather FWIW.
-
anon_82641[m]
I don't think it's be default
-
charolastra
while it's convenient to ask here. i encourage you to look for yourself with a network capture program (wireshark)
-
sethsimmons
Agreed!
-
botcoinnotbot[m]
btw how many connections do your nodes make when you set peers to unlimited? All the nodes I set up tend to max out at around 1000 outgoing and 40 incoming no matter how long they run
-
sethsimmons
Idk, I don't change the defaults and don't recommend changing them.
-
selsta
the longer the node is running the more incoming peers you will have most likely
-
sethsimmons
There are reasons for the defaults 🙂
-
selsta
mine have 80 incoming
-
sethsimmons
<selsta "the longer the node is running t"> I usually reach 60-80 incoming but don't monitor closely.
-
selsta
"I do believe that the GUI uses SSL by default" <-- I think so
-
botcoinnotbot[m]
sethsimmons: 😅 i set the peers super high cause I paid for some extremely over the top VPS servers
-
sethsimmons
Incoming is default unlimited, which is where you're adding value to the network
-
sethsimmons
Increasing outgoing peers causes additional network bandwidth to be consumed and generally isn't beneficial.
-
sethsimmons
That doesn't mean never increase outoing peers, but the default 12 should be fine for almost everything and prevents additional network load when propagating transcations and blocks.
-
botcoinnotbot[m]
i added a lot of mining pool nodes to my node cause I had a theory that if they are better connected it would reduce orphan block rate, not sure if that was right now
-
botcoinnotbot[m]
theory
-
thehunter
botcoinnotbot[m], u wanna create a token/coin with us?
-
sethsimmons
;p;
-
botcoinnotbot[m]
my theory
-
botcoinnotbot[m]
Mining Node -> X number of intermediary nodes -> another mining node (increased orphan)
-
botcoinnotbot[m]
Mining Node -> 1 hop through my node -> another mining node (reduced orphan)
-
moneromooo
For X > 1, yes :P
-
botcoinnotbot[m]
that assumes they haven't done that themselves
-
sethsimmons
<botcoinnotbot[m] "hey, do nodes with without open "> Checked with others and it seems transactions over D++ are only sent to outgoing peers to avoid malicious peers sybil-attacking and being the first in the stem-phase a disproportionate amount.
-
moneromooo
However, if you have huge amounts of peers, you might start being slow to send to the last ones as you walk through the rest first.
-

-
gingeropolous
when i know damn well there's nothing to scan for
-
moneromooo
Does it expose refresh-from-block-height ?
-
moneromooo
Oh wait, you mean a "hole" ?
-
moneromooo
That's an interesting idea...
-
gingeropolous
hole?
-
gingeropolous
i guess its not fast forward. but skip.
-
moneromooo
I mean, you received/sent txes till height X, you're at height x+y. You quit. You restart, and the network is at height x+y+z. You tell the wallet to not bother scanning from x+y to x+y+z.
-
moneromooo
Is that your case ?
-
gingeropolous
yep
-
moneromooo
How can you be sure you did not receive anything from x+y to x+y+z though?
-
gingeropolous
well, you can't. But who cares?
-
gingeropolous
the user knows what they received at x+y
-
gingeropolous
and they are going to send their monero that they know is there
-
gingeropolous
if they received something in z, sure... maybe they can rescan when idle or something
-
gingeropolous
but that shouldn't affect things afaict
