Just going to share because this is kind of sad. I had some other people try the PinePhone I got for a few minutes to ask what they thought about the usability of the phone. All of them said that it has all of the features they need for a reasonable cost. I was amazed until almost all of them ended with "I'm going to keep using my iPhone/Android Phone though. I think I'm upgrading again when my contract expires". Society
-
kijari[m]
scares me. I'll mention as well that they all know how to use Linux. Unfortunately using Linux doesn't always translate to caring about privacy or reasonable tech prices.
-
Mumuks[m]1
Phones are a status object. Like having a certain car, or certain sneakers.
-
Mumuks[m]1
Samsung and Apple have worked really hard to socially engineer this perception on people.

-
Mumuks[m]1
Good for you, but in my experience it is like that everywhere, even in poor countries
-
Mumuks[m]1
Can I ask in which country it is not like that?
-
kijari[m]
Sorry, had to play with my cat for a while. I wish phones and shit were not status symbols. I drive an old ass car that most people look at and think of it as a rust bucket and use lots of older technology where possible because it's just better than modern equivalents. For example, my landlord's washer and dryer is old enough that if anything goes wrong, we can buy parts without a single issue, fix it, and it's good for
-
kijari[m]
quite a few more years. Same goes for older fridges and freezers, and even phones (although modern phones like the PinePhone and others allow you to repair your device easily). People see that as extremely weird but I don't care about status symbols whatsoever.
-
kijari[m]
The funny thing is that my devices, appliances and vehicle can easily be repaired when they break for extremely cheap. Everyone that has newer hardware in my area has a tendency for it to break within a couple of years and they'll just buy a new one because it's apparently cheaper than repairing it. Hell, I've seen people walk out of stores with a brand new phone and within a week have the entire front and back completely
-
kijari[m]
cracked. They then just use Apple Care or other equivalents to indirectly throw it out and get a new one.
-

Where is the biggest Monero community? On Matrix? Justin talked about bringing all people to Matrix. What room is the best for Monero related questions?
-
-
anonmon777[m]
-
kijari[m]
Go to "Join Room" and just type "Monero". It's basically the most populated rooms on Matrix that are the best for getting responses to your questions in a timely manner.
-
kijari[m]
Oh, wait. Are you on IRC?
-
anonmon777[m]
No. Is IRC the better option?
-
nioc
matrix is bridged to irc so.......
-
kijari[m]
No, I was just wondering because I saw the # beside your name which confused me for a moment. If you're on matrix you can just do what I said above and you'll find a community pretty much instantly.
-
anonmon777[m]

XMR mining sounds like not the best room choice.
-
kijari[m]
I'd mainly recommend rooms which are more general like Monero Community, this room, and others that are similar.
-
anonmon777[m]
At Monero Community I don't have permission to write. Is this a Matrix thing?
-
kijari[m]
Generally speaking those communities will have something in the description along the lines of "If you can't type in chat, follow [link here]" or write it out in the room information itself. Just depends on the room.
-
anonmon777[m]
<kijari[m] "Generally speaking those communi"> Nope. Can you join and write in the #freenode_#monero-community:matrix.org or #monero-dev:matrix.org or #freenode_#monero-dev:matrix.org ?
-
anonmon777[m]
Do I have to wait before I get write permission for preventing spam?
-
kijari[m]
Oh, it's one of those servers. I think for the #freenode servers you either need to be assigned permissions or in some they require you to sign up for an IRC account and somehow link it. Don't ask me how that works because I've never done it in all honesty.
-
anonmon777[m]
Because you use IRC and be fine?
-
kijari[m]
I used to use IRC but I abandoned it a while back. I was able to talk without an account for many months without an issue and suddenly every single server required me to make an account to talk or join, hence me leaving. Now I just use Matrix because it makes more sense in my case.

Yes, once the gain a higher and higher share of global hashrate they can push game theory further and further towards incentivizing compliant mining for purely financial reasons

one has to ask how much miners favor ideology over profits though

No. It's quite far from "publishable" still. And there is quite some infrastructure behind it that's not trivial to set up, 2 daemons, 6 RPC servers, 2 block explorers
-
rbrunner
But nothing against open-sourcing it, in principle.
-
rbrunner
And I consider it an open question whether there is real demand for something like this. My earlier website "Play with Monero addresses and seeds" (the root
monerotech.info) was an utter failure in this regard.
-
PapuaHardyNet
rbrunner: testnets are always nice to have, but very complex to set up, right?
-
rbrunner
Well, it's mostly getting all those command-line parameters for the Monero daemon right. It's not even a real net in my case, a single daemon running somewhere is enough to support TechWallet.
-

Well done, technet block 1869131 hit the limit of 300 KB. Looks like the wallet still needs some more rate-limiting, too easy to escalate.

As to Monero, I would encourage you to look at Jonestown mass-suicide. You know why Jones killed them all? Because he was afraid he is loosing control over them.
