There are two other main pool implementations AFAIK, zone117x's one (though the zone117x repo on github is unmaintained AFAIK, I don't know which fork is most current) and one by... M5M400_ I think ? No link.

Would be nice to have up to date links on getmonero.org if someone knows.

there's also snipa's, but looks like it hasn't been updated in a while:

Kovri's probably dead and buried by now.

Sxmr's pool base is built off nodejs-pool.
-
Snipa
It's not entirely unmaintained it just hasn't needed many changes for the core functionality over the years.

I do need to go disable the BTC options now that ShapeShift and xmr.to API's are both gone.

would a centralized exchange like kraken or binance allow me to buy just a small amount of monero at a time?
-
Elementoshi[m]
the p2p ones like localmonero and bisq have nothing but offers where the minimum is $50, but what if i want to buy $5 worth of monero?
-
Bill48105
not sure on what the minimums are but in many cases the withdrawal fee ends up a factor for many coins

wolfkeeper[m]
Morning, I need some assistance please. I am moving over from windows to linux. There are so many versions available. Ubuntu is recommended for beginners, but would this be suitable if want to start mining monero?
-
Inge-
yes
-
M1kdos9b[m]
wolfkeeper[m] Debian is user friendly and stable
-
M1kdos9b[m]
Ubuntu isn't bad either. Look at screenshots between the two and pick what you like. It doesn't matter that much
-
wolfkeeper[m]
<1kdos9b[m] "wolfkeeper[m] Debian is user fri"> Awesome, thanks. I a bit new to linux....the OSi s downloadable for free from a 'distro' - this seems a bit dodgy. Is it legit?
-
M1kdos9b[m]
"Distro" means distribution. Every Linux OS that's prepackaged for install is known as a "distro"
-
M1kdos9b[m]
Ubuntu is an excellent start. Just download from their website and check the checksums if you know how
-
wolfkeeper[m]
<M1kdos9b[m] "Ubuntu is an excellent start. Ju"> not quite sure - at does that mean 'checksums'?
-
M1kdos9b[m]
It's a way of verifying that you downloaded an untampered or uncorrupted file. I wouldn't worry about that right now. Focus on giving Ubuntu a shot
-
-
M1kdos9b[m]
There will be some growing pains but if you have some savvy tech skills and patience it'll grow on ya
-
-
wolfkeeper[m]
<M1kdos9b[m] "There will be some growing pains"> thanks
-
fehho[m]
Off-topic note, but if you are given the option while installing to have a "separate home folder", select that option. It will pay off if you decide to change your distribution since you can keep a lot of your documents and configurations that way.
-
wolfkeeper[m]
another question - I've been looking into the mining of monero and trying to work out how profitble it is. soe sources say you can mine 1 monero a day, others one a month! So I have a nice with good hardware a AMD RYZEN 9 3900X 12x Cores Unlocked CPU. would this beany good to mine a substantial amount?
-
wolfkeeper[m]
<fehho[m] "Off-topic note, but if you are g"> Ah, ce, thanks will do that...
-
wolfkeeper[m]
... nice
-
fehho[m]
Both of those numbers are very inflated. Maybe they were accurate many years ago. Current rate is .005/day on that CPU according to benchmarks
-
fehho[m]
(in monero, spot price usd $1.22/day)
-
wolfkeeper[m]
<fehho[m] "(in monero, spot price usd $1.22"> oh... so in your opinion is it worth mining?
-
fehho[m]
wolfkeeper: It's free money (as long as it covers your electricity). The more important aspect is decentralizing the network, which you contribute to as long as you choose a small pool. Because Monero mines on the CPU, you can also mine other coins on your GPU at the same time, which currently tend to be more profitable because of GPU supply being choked.
-
fehho[m]
Strengthening the network is priceless.
-
fehho[m]
Though, in my opinion, running a public node is just as important as mining.
-

wolfkeeper[m]
<fehho[m] "wolfkeeper: It's free money (as "> thanks, that is very helpful.....i am all for everything monero stands for...
-
wolfkeeper[m]
so how do I get into mining and on a small pool?
-
wolfkeeper[m]
here's a very silly question... what internet speeds do I need?
-
fehho[m]
For mining, speed isn't the concern, just consistency since no internet means you can't mine. But at this point, these are questions better answered in the monero mining chat.
-
M1kdos9b[m]
Any internet speed will do. Download XMR-STAK or other software and simply point it at a pool. There's documentation on everything
-
wolfkeeper[m]
<fehho[m] "For mining, speed isn't the conc"> thanks for all your help.
-
fehho[m]
1kdos9b: I'd recommend against XMR-stak, it's just worse than xmrig.
-
M1kdos9b[m]
I recommend supportxmr pool
-
M1kdos9b[m]
A bigger pool pays out more consistently
-
M1kdos9b[m]
Sure sure, XMRrig instead of XMRstak. Sometimes a better miner comes along every year
-
fehho[m]
Bigger pool also means that bigger pool has more of the global hashrate, if that pool gets too much of the hashrate then it could attack the network and destroy the price of your payout.
-
fehho[m]
* Bigger pool also means that bigger pool has more of the global hashrate, if that pool gets too much of the hashrate then it could attack the network and destroy the value of your payout.
-
wolfkeeper[m]
<M1kdos9b[m] "Sure sure, XMRrig instead of XMR"> oh my.... so which one then...?
-
fehho[m]
Or just straight up exit scam, and even if the owner is altruistic (they are) their controls could be hacked.
-
wolfkeeper[m]
XMRig or XMRStak or supportxmr pool
-
fehho[m]
The first two are mining software, the last one is a pool (and a big one at that)
-
wolfkeeper[m]
Ok, so I download the mining software then select the pool? Which mining software is better?
-
fehho[m]
My personal recommendation is moneroocean (a medium size pool)which provides and xmrig. Most pools will hand you a configuration file.
-
ardent[m]
How good is the algo switching component of moneroocean? Is it comparable to using nicehash and exchanging?
-
fehho[m]
moneroocean.stream, find the help button bottom right for their guide. However unless you really want to jump in immediately, find some second opinions.
-
fehho[m]
ardent: Never used nicehash so I don't know the question, but moneroocean's algo switching is fire and forget (if you use their fork of xmrig)
-
wolfkeeper[m]
<fehho[m] "
moneroocean.stream, fin"> Awesome thanks.

endor00[m]
<Elementoshi[m] "would a centralized exchange lik"> Every exchange has their own trading minimums and fees. Kraken allows you to buy/sell 0.05 xmr per trade, and the fees are very small if you're in the EUR area

monerod has the benefit of being the monero server. so you can be your own bank. and its super rad
