moneroyay
hello
-
moneroyay
so many ppl here
-
moneroyay
which channel can I ask about the rpc daemon and its functionality ?
-
ndorf
this one
-
moneroyay
nice, thanks
-
ndorf
:)
-
moneroyay
I've setup a daemon and using RPC from another machine
-
moneroyay
it bans the ip from the other machine after a bit
-
moneroyay
where can I find the conditions that would trigger that ?
-
moneroyay
or even better, a log entry saying why
-
moneromooo
Set log level 1, it should tell you.
-
moneromooo
moenrod set_log 1
-
moneroyay
ta, trying it out
-
moneromooo
I'm not familiar with why RPC, rather than P2P, gets banned though. I assume there's a message.
-
moneroyay
in the log it just says ip and banned
-
moneroyay
get_bans shows it in the list
-
moneroyay
can unban it with set_bans
-
moneroyay
but comes back
-
ndorf
are you sure you're connecting to rpc port 18081, and not p2p port 18080?
-
moneroyay
have to wait a bit for it to break, restarted the daemon
-
moneroyay
yes
-
moneroyay
its restricted as well
-
moneroyay
it only started doing it in the last week or so
-
moneroyay
first saw it on testnet daemon
-
ndorf
that seems really weird. i also didn't think bans had anything to do with RPC, only P2P
-
moneromooo
RPC can ban.
-
moneromooo
It's rare though.
-
ndorf
is it the same ban list, applies to both P2P and RPC?
-
moneromooo
IIRC yes.
-
moneromooo
I looked. It's for... what seems to be forks by lamers not changing network id or the like.
-
ndorf
is there any special case that would prevent 127.0.0.1 from being banned? if so, an ssh tunnel could be a quick n easy workaround
-
moneromooo
Probably not.
-
ndorf
d'oh
-
moneroyay
not banned yet, but network id might be the cause
-
moneroyay
running 2 gui on different machines and switching between main and test checking stuff
-
moneroyay
so maybe multiple failed attempts by the gui to open/refresh wallets might be causing it
-
ndorf
by default, testnet & stagenet run on totally different ports (28080, 28081, 38080, 38081...)
-
ndorf
so it shouldn't be too easy to accidentally connect a testnet client to a mainnet daemon, or vice versa
-
moneroyay
yes, but when opening a mainnet wallet, you have to change the node port in config seperate
-
moneroyay
in the gui that is
-
moneroyay
if you forget, suppose this is what happens
-
ndorf
gotcha. i'm not familiar with the GUI to be quite honest. i know the CLI and RPC wallets will automatically use the right port if you specify --testnet or --stagenet
-
moneroyay
I'll keep an eye on the logs, but thanks, the info really helped
-
moneroyay
another question about the restricted ports
-
moneromooo
The wallet will check when loading a wallet file that the testnet/mainnet/stagenet matches.
-
moneroyay
scenario: one instance, default restricted on 18081 and unrestricted on 48081
-
moneroyay
when I run ./monerod status with the daemon in background
-
moneroyay
on the same machine as daemon, it seems to connect to restricted and I can't issue any usefull commands
-
ndorf
yeah. it connects to 18081 by default, which in your case is restricted
-
moneroyay
can I point it to 48081 ?
-
moneroyay
to unban etc ?
-
ndorf
FWIW, most people leave 18081 for unrestricted (localhost only) and use 18089 for restricted (0.0.0.0)
-
ndorf
if you prefer not to do that, you can do ./monerod --rpc-bind-port=48081 status
-
moneroyay
two options, great
-
ndorf
just make sure whatever your unrestricted port is is only bound on localhost, so it's not reachable from other machines.
-
moneroyay
yip, I remotely manage it but use fw to block the port
-
moneroyay
partly why the numbers are swapped
-
ndorf
yeah, you can do it with firewall also. as long as you're sure you know what you're doing :)
-
ndorf
personally i use an ssh tunnel to access the unrestricted RPC remotely, leaving it bound to 127.0.0.1 only
-
ndorf
i think there is also an option to enable user/password authentication.
-
moneroyay
thanks for the quick replies and useful info!
-
ndorf
np. hope your banning problem goes away once you've got the port #s sorted
-
moneroyay
it will probably go away as soon as I stop testing :)
-
ndorf
lol.
-
h2017
you're supposed to be able to set it up with tls+username/pw
-
moneroyay
so, log level 1 shows the last call and then blocked, not the reason. However, think I managed to repo the cause
-
moneroyay
I can open a testnet wallet with the gui if it has no password and the node points to a mainnet daemon
-
moneroyay
suppose the daemon doesn't like that after a couple of calls
-
moneroyay
and then bans
-
moneroyay
as moneromooo pointed out, the gui will block opening a tesnet wallet, but looks like it only does so if the wallet has a password
-
h2017
the tls/password stuff is for the rpc connection
-
h2017
including wallet connections
-
ndorf
moneroyay: oof, sounds like a bug for sure
-
ndorf
CLI wallet will refuse to open it, password or not
-
moneroyay
thanks h2017
-
ndorf
moneroyay: if you make an issue about it here
github.com/monero-project/monero-gui i'm sure it would be appreciated
-
moneroyay
ta, first defect log so will have to get familiar with the process
-
moneroyay
suppose nobody would use blank password for mainnet wallets, hence why not that big a deal :)

Any guesses about how 2022 atomic swap volume will compare to btc/xmr bisq pair volume?
-
h2017
it should make bisq redundant
-
h2017
the question probably should be asked on #monero-markets though
-
gingeropolous
bisq will still provide a good marketplace for trading
-
gingeropolous
id imagine
-
gingeropolous
i.e., you still need a place for people to post bids and asks, and bisq is nicely already set up for that. atomic swaps just removes the need for whatsitcalled
-
gingeropolous
arbiter.... envoy.... middleman....
-
h2017
yes you are right. i thought it would be good if recent atomic swap prices could be broadcast over the p2p network
-
h2017
if the whole experience could somehow be decentralised
-
gingeropolous
oh that could be interesting
-
gingeropolous
i guess on the bitcoin chain the prices could be stored in cleartext so there's actual truth
-
h2017
the prices don't have to be stored on any blockchain
-
h2017
just broadcast
-
h2017
it's strictly volatile information
-
h2017
somefunny business might happen with malicious nodes but that's to be expected
-
h2017
nodes should ignore highly discrepant information
-
gingeropolous
well thats the problem with permissionless p2p networks
-
gingeropolous
you can't trust any peer blindly

-

<mechanic41turk[m "I am thinking about switching to"> Ivpn also offers wireguard. I think protonvpn still offers openvpn only
-
mechanic41turk[m
protonvpn is ages behind of mullvad and ivpn.
-
mechanic41turk[m
mullvad and ivpn only requires one to generate an account number. They don't require name, email address, etc.
-
mechanic41turk[m
Protonvpn, generally since it is connected to your protonmail, and since protonmail still requires some credit card to be saved to their system, knows your name, ID, bank acc, etc.
-
mechanic41turk[m
which is really invasive for a vpn service.
-

how long should it take to synchroniz for the first time after creating a wallet

Monero is great. The seeds generated by the native wallet can also be used in something like Cake Wallet. I am assuming it's a standard, as opposed to the fractured nature of bitcoin seed generation for different clients and implementations.
-
-
moneromooo
Possibly. Not all wallets generate the same seed type.
-
moneromooo
The main offender was mymonero, but old versions only. There's a new 14 word system now that's probably going to take over.
-
moneromooo
AFAIK trezor and/or ledger use a different system again.
