h2017_
i couldn't find any examples of a perfect systemd file when i googled
-
h2017_
-
moneromooo
There's one in the monero tree in contrib.
-
ndorf
the one in the monero tree is better IMHO :)
-
h2017_
ok i'll have a look
-
aum
the systemd file in monero git utils/systemd is working fine for me
-
h2017_
i didn't know baout that. i just saw it a few minutes ago
-
h2017_
I'm not actually seeing what the "portable mode" checkbox is doing
-
h2017_
i wanted to understand that
-
h2017_
i can't be bothered. i haven't isntalled monero on a usb stick
-
aum
is there any way to get the gui wallet program to permit mining in cases where the node is on a separate box on the same LAN?
-
aum
can anyone recommend a good exchange that deals in XMR with a wide range of fiats, and accepts credit cards?
-
jwinterm
aum, almost no exchanges take credit cards
-
aum
ok thx
-
aum
I found a couple of local dealers on localmonero anyway ;)
-
jwinterm
np
-
h2017_
i don't see my node on monerohash
-
h2017_
according to some websites i'm either in kingston ontario or a town called tilbury ontario
-
h2017_
that's sort of like ring signatures but for a location
-
h2017_
but nm which one is real, i don't see either one on the map and that's disapointing
-
h2017_
i have 23 inbound connections too
-
nioc
h2017_: my node almost never shows there
-
nioc
Give it so time and it may show
-
nioc
so = some
-
fluffypony
h2017_ / aum: reason I mentioned so is because running a public RPC node is a very different beast
-
fluffypony
and has a very different threat model
-
fluffypony
the network does not need public RPC nodes, but it does need nodes with open inbound ports
-
fluffypony
of course you do an additional service to some network participants running a public RPC node
-
fluffypony
but many people don't want to take on the added burden / risk, and that's fine
-
endor00[m]
What are the risks of running a public rpc node, specifically?
-
dgoddard
RPC calls expose APIs with a much larger attack surface than just the few things a TCP peer needs to do to request blocks, verify them, and share them.
-
fluffypony
^^
-
aum
I'll be doing netfilter IP allow-listing for my RPC port
-
fluffypony
if you're opening it up for your use that's very different
-
Mochi102
nioc, do you run it with --public-node ?
-
Jeremy_Rand_DT[m
sgp_: Hey, would you happen to know what the license is for the Grayhat 2020 Monero Village live stream? (Would like to post a cut+re-encoded version on the Namecoin website, so I need to know whether the license allows this, and if so, what license disclaimer I should put next to the video.)
-
yanmaani
Jeremy_Rand_DT[m: Isn't it fair use?
-
Jeremy_Rand_DT[m
yanmaani: no idea, but some other Monero conference recordings are explicitly labeled as CC-licensed, so I'd rather get some confirmation. Also the Namecoin.org site is mostly CC-licensed, so if we host a video that is under a different license, I need to know what license disclaimer to put, otherwise people would think it's under the same license as the rest of our site
-
yanmaani
If it's just of your talk, you don't need to ask permission
-
yanmaani
Or I guess there's some announcer whose permission you'd need
-
Jeremy_Rand_DT[m
yanmaani: I mostly care about the introduction from rehrar etc; I have a raw recording of what I submitted to him, which I already own the copyright on. If it were a recording that the conference made of my talk, I would not automatically have any rights to it.
-
Jeremy_Rand_DT[m
And yes, I understand that a ~30-second introduction may be short enough that it's covered by fair use, I'd still like to be on firmer legal ground than that. Especially since Monero as a community is open enough that I wouldn't be surprised if a CC license is approved
-
yanmaani
it's not possible to copyright a recording. (Burrow-Giles Lithographic Co. v. Sarony)
-
Jeremy_Rand_DT[m
yanmaani: again, I do not care what your legal theories are on why I don't need a favorable license, I still wish to ask about the license, please stop badgering me about this.
-
ErCiccione[m]
Anybody has the ;ink of the announcement of Monero on bitcointalk?
-
raecarruth
btctalk :)
-
raecarruth
haven't been there in years
-
yanmaani
ErCiccione[m]: wasn't it announced as somthing else at first?
-
ErCiccione[m]
yeah, Bitmonero and later the name was changed in just Monero
-
yanmaani
-
yanmaani
but you had bytecoin before that, etc
-
raecarruth
ew, bytecoin
-
ErCiccione[m]
yanmaani: yeah i only need it to add a link somewhere. Thanks.
-
zed19[m]
how big is the blockchain right now?
-
zed19[m]
in gb
-
havk[m]
66 Gb
-
zed19[m]
thanks
-
ErCiccione[m]
zed19: should be closer to 100GB
-
Navion250
Why are you here? For the tech? Then you should be off at Zcash instead of trying to con newbies into a coin that doesn't work.
-
Navion250
For the money? If you put your money in BTC or ETH you would have been better off.
-
Navion250
For the magical crypto friends? Monero leadership laughs from loosers like that. Find yourself more healthy realationships that don't steal your money.
-
dEBRUYNE
^ jess
-
sandy-claws
i wonder if he's going to spend Christmas doing that
-
Inge-
zed19[m]: my monerod folder i 95GB currently
-
ComplyLast
I'm certainly not here for the Magical Crypto Friends, 1/4 of them are VISA maximalists.
-
Inge-
ComplyLast: Love how someone pushes a coin that is a clone of monero - and then spams people, telling them to use Zcash instead
-
ComplyLast
that part was funny too :)
-
fluffypony
heck, I'm not even here for the Magical Crypto Friends
-
ComplyLast
you're doing it wrong then fluffypony
-
fluffypony
dammit
-
yanmaani
isn't this the same loon who claimed we were all racists?
-
fluffypony
what does "Monero leadership laughs from loosers like that" even mean
-
fluffypony
yanmaani: and that we're a cult
-
yanmaani
what's his problem?
-
dEBRUYNE
We should start using the term cult member instead of community member lol
-
dEBRUYNE
'The year was 2014 when that pony guy lured me into his cult'
-
ComplyLast
church of monero kinda tried that already and it didn't go well
-
ComplyLast
lets maybe not go there again
-
ErCiccione[m]
The church of Monero was more stupid than harmful
-
yanmaani
...church of monero?
-
ComplyLast
ErCiccione[m], agreed
-
hyc
I'm glad he's here to teach us about how to have healthy relationships
-
sgp_
Jeremy_Rand_DT[m: all you need to do is say it happened at the Monero Village at Grayhat 2020
-
sgp_
Which you would probably do anyway
-
nioc
<Mochi102> nioc, do you run it with --public-node ? <---- you must have been thinking of somebody else
-
Mochi102
You said that your node never ended up on the map.
-
nioc
only default
-
nioc
thought that it only need inbound connections to show
-
Jeremy_Rand_DT[m
sgp_: okay thanks. That sounds like a CC-BY-4.0 license (i.e. do what you like as long as attribution is given); is that an accurate assessment?
-
nioc
-
sethsimmons
Nice Kobe SerHack!
-
sethsimmons
* Nice job SerHack!
-
SerHack
Thank you!!!

Mochi102
Yes, congrats on that SerHack

gingeropolous, hey
-
gingeropolous
howdy
-
gingeropolous
re: port, 18089 or 18081 is fine. it really doesn't matter at this point, except to perhaps organize it better in your head
-
afa12354
gingeropolous, what port do you reccomend for "--rpc-restricted-bind-port" option, is 18089 fine? Also I suppose the warning I get is a bug, because 0.0.0.0 includes the 127.0.0.1 IP and my desktop pc assigned IP in DHCP client list on router settings?
-
gingeropolous
i dunno about your dhcp etc setup, but what i've found is that if you want to offer public remote node service, you need to bind the restricted ip to the IP that your DHCP gives you
-
gingeropolous
and then forward the port from your dhcp router to that PC
-
gingeropolous
and if you want to maintain local access to that node, you have to bind the unrestricted to 127.0.0.1
-
gingeropolous
now, if you want another computer on your internal network to still have access to the node, then you have to do different bindings etc
-
gingeropolous
and rely on your router firewall to keep the baddies from your unrestricted rpc port
-
gingeropolous
i should prolly make an updated guide or something
-
gingeropolous
with those soft PDf sploofy graphics
-
asf
gingeropolous, even if I use the ip that dhcp gave to my pc and have the 18089 and 18081 ports open on that PC, I still get that "W --public-node is enabled, but RPC server 192.168.1.104:18089 may be unreachable from outside, please check RPC server bind address" warning, It only disappears If use the 0.0.0.0 IP, I haven't confirmed whether this is
-
asf
a bug or not with "netstat -a" yet
-
donkeydonkey[m]
<fluffypony "the network does not need public"> so running a node without --public-node and With --restricted-rpc. is that the basic options for a non public RPC node. or something else? thanks
-
aum
can anyone recommend a good bitcoin wallet app for linux?
-
rehrar
Jeremy_Rand_DT[m: use my recording intro. CC.
-
viperperidot[m]
<aum "can anyone recommend a good bitc"> Electrum electrum.org
-
aum
viperperidot[m], thanks -- especially that I don't need to pull 300+GB of chain
-
viperperidot[m]
Yep just be aware of the potential risks when connecting to a public node on bitcoin
-
Zta
Sorry =)
-
Minimons
Life is hard, Zta! :-D
-
h2017
i finally have my permanent monero node set up

h2017
thanks, i feel good about giving back (not being sarcastic at all)
-
h2017
that sounded like i was being sarcastic
-
h2017
i'm NOT being sarcastic. i am genuninely happy to be contributing to the success of this project in this small way
-
blackrat
history will never forget this your sacrifice ;)

h2017: thanks for doing your part, we appreciate it :)

snnnnnnnnnnnnnnn-ahhhh... IRC smells good this evening!

synesthesia
-
Zta
of course my crappy irc client had to crash right after I wrote that
-
nioc
guess you missed this then..... synesthesia
-
Zta
that looks like a wiki rabbit hole
-
Zta
I'm not ready for that just yet =)
-
h2017
in the GUI, after connecting to a remote node, the commands no longer work. It appears to think that the node is at 127.0.0.1 from the POV of running commands
-
sethsimmons
You can’t run commands against a restricted RPC.
-
sethsimmons
AFAIK
