page 53: Privacy coins (AECs) undermine AML/CFT regulations, but they like view keys. "The Department considers the use of AECs to be a high-risk activity that is indicative of possible criminal conduct.". Does not liquidate seized monero, "as doing so allows them to re-enter the stream of commerce for potential future criminal use."
-

"the Department [of Justice] has prosecuted a number of individuals operating as P2P exchangers for money laundering and for violating the BSA."

also threaten to sue anyone who even thinks about using U.S. hosting, of course. Some words talking about teaching LEs how to use Chainalysis. Suggest literally all the other foreign countries regulate everything to death too, and threatening cryptocurrency exchanges into submission
-
yanmaani
here's a nice quote:
-
yanmaani
"The inherently global nature of the virtual asset ecosystem poses significant investigative challenges for U.S. law enforcement agencies and for Department prosecutors."
-
yanmaani
>Current terrorist use of cryptocurrency may represent the first raindrops of an oncoming storm of expanded use that could challenge the ability of the United States and its allies to disrupt financial resources
-
hubert3
is it normal that monero wallet on mac (latest version 0.17) takes hours to sync if you only open it once every few months?
-
hubert3
daemon blocks remaining: 2200000 and it's just sitting there
-
hubert3
now daemon synchronised, wallet blocks remaining 2155000
-
Inge-
1. download blockchain (synching) 2. wallet scanning for inputs (scan) 3. Profit!
-
hubert3
I understand, it just takes a looong time for occasional users
-
endor00[m]
2.2M blocks remaining means you're syncing from 0, normally it's supposed to pick up from where you left off
-
endor00[m]
But an hour or two once a month sounds consistent for ~20k blocks
-
endor00[m]
<yanmaani "page 53: Privacy coins (AECs) un"> This right here is a massive load of totalitarian bs. It's the first step towards criminalizing [financial] privacy

Hypothetical question. Everyone in the world stops doing any Monero transactions for like a week. What happens to the miners?
-
sech1
Miners keep mining
-
sech1
tx fees are like 1% of block reward
-
riceandbeans
But isn't verification of transactions what comprises the block?
-
lh1008[m]
Hello everyone, thank you all for your hard work and contributions. 6 years of really hard work. Have a great weekend everyone.
-
sech1
miners will just mine empty blocks if there are no transactions to mine
-
riceandbeans
So the ledger can grow without transactions?
-
lza_menace
riceandbeans: yes, but blocks are tiny without transactions. look at this block explorer for another chain (wownero):
wownero.club/block/height/253838
-
riceandbeans
Is the reward any different if there are no transactions?
-
rbrunner
The block reward is the same, but of course without any transactions in the block no fees will be added to the total reward
-
yanmaani
what's the deal with wownero?
-
lza_menace
ask in #wownero
-
lza_menace
idk. it started as a joke and remains a joke. i like it because it's like a less serious monero and we're all just having fun
-

yanmaani: wownero was created in 2018 as a friendly fork to take the steam out of a bad fork, moneroV

rot: I just come back from listening about half of episode 7 "Mesa Redonda". Entertaining. Good audio quality. Quite clear Spanish. Certainly worth to continue.
-
rbrunner
Do you see more and more "hits" over time? Do you reach more listeners?
-
rot
rbrunner: hell yeah. paging anhdres[m] so he can get excited as well. thanks for the feedback.
-
rot
it's been steady thus far. we are pretty satisfied with the pace and numbers we are piling up. nothing crazy yet, but it's decent.
-
rbrunner
I guess quite some people will be perplexed about the subject of the first 10 minutes :) (Not to leave spoiler here, listen yourself if you can :)
-
rot
haha, wish there were more active spanish speakers on irc et. al. but one can only what one can do. we are humbly putting out our laidback episodes brick by brick.
-
rot
you are definitely welcome to the next roundtable if you choose to come forward and be part of el monero.
-
rbrunner
Uh, thanks for the invite, but that would not turn out well. I never spoke Spanish, only reading and listening so far. Not even writing ...
-
rot
another way we can reach more listeners is if current suscribers and listeners leave a review. or if we get sponsored^(tm) but alas, tough as it is a foreign language the vast majority does not speak or understand. :'(
-
rot
that's fine. i completely get it. it is still fun nonetheless, that you are getting some practice by listening to a podcast about a topic you are already into.
-
rbrunner
Hmmm, yes. But let's hope you will continue your organic growth, like Monero itself organically grows. You will get there, eventually.
-
moneromooo
Probably the best way to learn a language.
-
rbrunner
Listening to podcasts? Yes, starting from a certain level of fluency that's certainly a good way to learn more.
-
rbrunner
And that's definitely better than when I was young, when all those possibilities the Internet offers now were simply nonexistent.
-
moneromooo
I mean listening to something you're already into, gives you the drive to really understand.
-
rot
it's lovely when for instance related start-ups or companies within the ecosystem get to sponsor podcasts, newsletters or things of the like because it makes the circular economy and bolsters both sides of the coin: media and backend services.
-
dixie__flatline[
rot: isn't spanish like the second most popular language?
-
rot
i'm looking at ya cake or xmr.to, or whatever else. still worth mentioning these services regardless of sponsorship, indubitably.
-
rot
just a thought.
-
moneromooo
Might not be far but there's Arabic and Chinese with *loads* of speakers.
-
rot
so glad you dig our pod rbrunner. any further criticism, reviews or people you can share it with, feel free to proceed. :-)
-
moneromooo
English probably too.
-
rbrunner
Thanks, rot :) Will have an eye on them.
-
rot
dixie__flatline[: not familiar with statistics of late. i'd side with moo on chinese and arabic. think it was chinese or mandarin the most spoken, followed by english and perhaps spanish third. not an expert, again.
-
rot
danke, and thanks for being so active on reddit all the time.
-
rbrunner
Well, producing material about Monero in Spanish is well worth it, given the, er, reluctancy of many Spanish speakers to learn foreign languages.
-
rbrunner
Here in Europe the Spanish are at the lower end as far as foreign language learning is concerned.
-
rot
i can attest to that; and has annoyed me for a long, long time, the fact that they do not understand the impending necessity of learning, at the very least, english. even at a very high level.
-
rot
losing battle...
-
rbrunner
Well, on the other hand, find people in the US speaking second or even third languages :)
-

makes sense. i would rather learn german or slavic languages before spanish.

Well, about that learning German: It's really complicated for very little overall gain, if you ask me. And Germans use so much English nowadays even if they speak German, with only German you won't get far anymore ...
-
rot
Have heard the same bit before. I still find myself attracted to the language itself; but may as well drop it upon first try. Hella complicated.
-
rot
>speaks Spanish
-
rot
>thinks others are more complicated. heh.
-
rot
polish, estonian? something like that.

(we are definitely talking about monero. on-topic conversation all around.)

rbrunner: I am learning German only because of the German literature, philosophy, and economical writings.
-
rbrunner
Yes, many interesting things there certainly.
-
rbrunner
I don't even know how much about Monero is around in German. Never really checked, because I only visit Reddit, and these channels here.
-
rot
there is a pod too. alexanarcho[m] does it.
-
dixie__flatline[
There is Monero Mumble podcast, which is in German.
-
rot
they just posted it once or twice on /r/Monero.
-
rbrunner
The usual suspects :)
-
dixie__flatline[
That, and the einundzwanzig podcast, I listen for learning German.
-
rot
note: i'm starting to feel self-conscious about posting it on the subreddit. barely some engagement. :(

rot
-
rot
there you go.
-
rbrunner
Ah, yes, the "Stammtisch". Something like a "roundtable".
-
rot
and kico has a portuguese pod.
-
dixie__flatline[
Yep.
-
rot
monero talk got english, el monero got spanish, mumble got german, kico got whatever its name is, portuguese.

Sometimes I nearly burst out in laughter when I see what the Portuguese made out of Latin, in contrast to what the Spanish came up with.
-
rbrunner
Not sure how this looks for somebody with Spanish as mother tongue.
-
rot
are you arguing Spanish is more pure and beautiful than Portuguese?
-
rbrunner
I think it is still nearer to Latin. The Portuguese ran further with it.
-
rbrunner
Like listening to Spanish and then saying "Not yet different enough" :)
-
rot
i'd agree with that, but with a large spoon of ignorance as languages aren't quite my expertise.

rbrunner: translation and localization is such a haul; i admire the volunteers that do that for free as i've dashed at translating a couple things and it is tough unless you do have a strong grip on languages you are switching over.

You can be an imposter and suffer for imposter syndrome for another subject.
-
rbrunner
And after you finished the English boys and girls rewrite everything, and you can basically start from scratch.
-
rot
hah.

Inge-: Is this an attempt to make our brains burn out and discapacitate the Monero dev community this way? My head aches thinking about that statement.

I don't think one is better than the other really.

I guess it depends whether you already have to show papersplease! to an exchange. Use whatever this one supports.

Otherwise, poloniex, bitfinex work fine.

Monero pumping nicely, I just wish I had more monero =(. And that it was easier to buy monero. How far off is the bitcoin atomic swaps do you think?
-
kayabaNerve
There's already two proof of concepts, one's been out for a month or two, one for a couple weeks duso
-
duso
Can someone explain what this means please? Transaction spends more than one very old output. Privacy would be better if they were sent separately.
-
moneromooo
Old outputs are less likely to be selected randomly, and your own outputs hide among them.
-
moneromooo
So if send more than one old output, the likelihood they're the real ones increase. At least that's the intuition.
