I lost $17USD worth of BTC in a BTC-to-XMR simpleswap exchange gone wrong. :-(
-
anicow
how did it go wrong? f
-
Steven_M
anicow: My guess is, because I close the browser window, before receiving the XMR. I didn't think I needed to monitor it and just wanted to get to bed last night. Today, no XMR. :-(

anicow
hm, that sucks. did you try going back to that page
-
selsta
Maybe you can try to contact their support? (Not sure what simpleswap is)
-
Steven_M
Anicow: Nope, it was in a private browsing window.
-
anicow
welp, do better next time i guess
-
Steven_M
selsta: Sorry, I should have said: simpleswap.io is a crypto to crypto exchange.
-
Steven_M
selsta: I'll try to get support, but I won't hold my breath.
-
Steven_M
anicow: yeah.

i went through the trouble of getting a bitcorn node up and running

anicow: selsta: Good news, I made a mistake and still have most of my BTC. :-)
-
anicow
NICE!
-
Steven_M
It turns out I accidently only sent $2USD worth of BTC to simpleswap, which is why I didn't get any XMR.
-
fullmetalScience
mooo are you still on?

expensivebead
Steve I need some BTC got anything i can do for some?

LEGAL STATEMENT: I unreservedly apologize to simpleswap.io and do not intend any defamation or damages.

Steven_M
expensivebead: do you wish to trade XMR for it?

If my wallet knew exactly which block had an input for it, would it suffice to scan just that very block?

-

The lost BTC.
-
fullmetalScience
But I'm curious about the one-off as well, if you can paste.
-
expensivebead
I do not have any XMR.
-
Steven_M
expensivebead: I'm not in a position to give to charity right now, sorry.

-

I can give you money to mine?
-
anicow
nah dont give people money to mine for you. that is pretty much always a scam.
-
expensivebead
Oh.
-
expensivebead
You guys sell xmr?
-
Steven_M
fullmetalScience: I thought simpleswap hadn't paid out, but I sent them the wrong amount of BTC, so it was my fault.
-
Steven_M
fullmetalScience: as for the one-off-address command: "The original intent was to help people who sent monero to some subaddress with a silly index (not sure how they managed that, there might have been a bug earlier)."
-
Steven_M
the quote is from moneromooo
-

Great. Thanks. Happy you got it sorted too.

you need to click the same menu but then choose wallet that's already created from hardware
-
always_su
this probably isn't the best place to get a grounded assessment... but does anyone feel confident about any XMR predictions?
-
always_su
I'm a bit biased in favor of XMR myself, but I only feel confident about market predictions once every few years, and I tend to be pretty spot on. And right now I'm feeling XMR is going to have a very good year
-
asymptotically
always_su: you might have better luck talking about price in #monero-markets or /r/xmrtrader
-
always_su
asymptotically: ah, thanks for pointing me in that direction! what do we discuss here?
-
always_su
Something I realized about XMR is that the general discourse around it belies its use case. Being focused so much on being "privacy" (cue the cartoon of a guy with shades)
-
rbrunner
More than a full day without a single new message relayed to Mattermost means that the IRC-to-Mattermost relay went titsup again. pigeons or somebody else with the necessary powers, can you please restart? TIA!
-
always_su
It makes it seem like the purpose of the coin is unusual in that regard. In actuality, the privacy is what makes the crypto *like what people typically expect of a currency*
-
always_su
a vendor that accepts paypal is accustomed to privacy more like XMR than like BTC. BTC is quite awkward, compared to other forms of currency!
-
anicow
real world usage for crypto: i cant pay my international vps bill with my debit card because of the country of origin.
-
anicow
i do NOTHING illegal with my boxen! i used to be able to pay no problem, but now because some place decided other place is BAD, i am affected
-
anicow
i did not sign up for that
-
anicow
use crypto andFORGET IT
-
always_su
anicow: and that's great! Now look at it from the perspective of the seller. With BTC, even if they use a different wallet for every account/payment, they're probably going to want to combine their revenue and spend/transfer it. And that's all traceable on the blockchain.
-
always_su
That kind of visibility isn't going to be desirable for anyone doing business. At the very least, it's a complication that requires developing and managing an extra layer of privacy into an inherently non-private public ledger.
-
anicow
traceability isnt that important to a small business, and plugins like coinpayments.net for WHM
-
anicow
*WHMCS use a wallet on their website for the user.
-
always_su
you make a good point, that there's readily available solutions. My personal experience is that most people are deterred from accepting cryptocurrencies by an uneasiness with the entire concept.
-
anicow
i see the price volatility as an important factor, that and people dont get 'how to make crypto into cash'
-
anicow
baby steps i guess
-
always_su
I see that, too! it's hard to price things when you think the price might drop 10% or more by the close of business that day
-
anicow
yes, alot of people especiially small businesses simply cannot afford to hodl
-
always_su
anicow: you actually just gave me a business idea
-
anicow
keep it a secret!
-
expensivebead
Someone give me btc now
-
always_su
I'm probably not going to implement, so I'll be glad if someone steals it xD. There's a market for stable conversion to fiat, and it's probably not hard to for a company to offer it at a rate that's profitable given the risk
-
jwinterm
!tip expensivebead btc
-
always_su
but I feel the real take-off point for crypto is when it's not being converted to fiat, but being used to buy other things in crypto. Take fiat off the balance sheets.
-
always_su
So you pay for your VPS in crypto, who is paying staff in crypto
-
anicow
dunno, but of all the industries vps' could probably tinker with that option

expensivebead

-
anicow
expensivebead no, you give ME btc
-
expensivebead
Fuck you
-
anicow
pff, typical
-
always_su
it could work, because maybe some of your vps platform developers live in Venezuela. Easy to pay them just like everyone else. And they can use crypto to buy food, because it's more stable than their fiat. And they will prefer XMR, so they don't worry the person they do business with will find out how much is in their wallet, baiting those persons to come after the developers to force the rest out of them
-
anicow
very good example
-
always_su
it's an example someone could realize today, as well. Vast sums have been spent cramming an insatiable need for tech. workers into silicon valley, who've now realized they can work remotely
-
anicow
haha true
-
always_su
we're at the cusp of a remote workforce revolution. it's only a matter time before someone makes a move
-
anicow
and at least one ivy league university is having all online classes this term.
-
anicow
i personally HATED online classes when i went to college, i would never do it again
-
anicow
unless they had some sort of remove classroom technology with webcams or something interactive
-
anicow
*remote
-
always_su
dude... I am so with you, there. I can't think things are gonna be stagnant, though... universities are too expensive. and there's nothing inherent to education about being physically present in a classroom.
