in bitcoin script you can shove whatever data you want after an OP_RETURN. i think in monero you can put whatever you want in the tx_extra field but someone might get upset

d4ndo[m]
By someone you mean miner!?

d4ndo[m]: i was thinking more the developers that have spent a lot of time making transactions all look the same, then you go stuff something into them making yours stand out

how is it in terms of moving money from fiat to monero and back

has it been censored a lot?

how big is the blockchain this days?
-

¨ 90 GB
-

oh wow it really grew
-
d4ndo[m]
But iit is growing slower because of bulletproof implementation.
-
d4ndo[m]
also the fees are pretty low now.
-
moneromooo
Somewhere between 25 GB and 30 GB for a pruned db.
-
d4ndo[m]
Yes a pruned blockchain is ~ 25-30 GiB
-
poro
does the pruning lose some functionality?
-
d4ndo[m]
No
-
poro
I remember pruning my bitcoin blockchain without my wallet loaded and then I had the redownload the whole thing
-
asymptotically
poro: bitcoin pruning only keeps the most recent N blocks, so the wallet isn't able to look back at the older blocks to see if you got any payments :(
-
asymptotically
you can rescan a monero wallet from scratch with a pruned node though
-
poro
thats awesome

d4ndo[m]
Nah is no botch,

poro
Noob question, is the whole cryptocurrency space stable independently of the coin
-
poro
like as long as the coin that you have has some inherent value, does it benefit from the stability of the whole cryptocurrency market
-
poro
inherent value based on the technology it uses I mean
-
poro
so excluding shitcoins
-
poro
So what Im saying is, is it unlikely that a billionare will manipulate the monero market specifically
-
moneromooo
So you're after tech that prevents rich people from buying and selling to change the exchange rate ?
-
d4ndo[m]
Lets say it this way: If Bitcoin goes to 0 - Monero will probably be used by a view nerds on some Unix machines..
-
moneromooo
There are coins that do that, allegedly. Stable coins.
-
yanmaani
does Monero support proof of balance like in bitcoin?
-
yanmaani
moneromooo: big emphasis on 'allegedly'
-
yanmaani
it's either just banking with extra crime, or "perpetual motion" tier crackpots
-
poro
no, what Im saying is, how anti-fragile is it, so if monero was the only crypto out there, it would be easier for a billionare to manipulate the market, since the whole market cap is like 1 billion right
-
yanmaani
it is 100% impossible to "manipulate the market"
-
poro
but if an actual manipulation were to start happening, would people just buy bitcoin with their monero, and wait and then buy monero back, preventing anything from happening
-
poro
or something like that
-
yanmaani
for bitcoin, monero, anything. The price is what people are willing to buy/sell it for
-
yanmaani
maybe? there's a specific ghetto for pricetalk, I think #monero-markets
-
moneromooo
If monero was the only crypto, people would not start buying bitcoin with monero.
-
moneromooo
Also, you never defined "manipulate" I think.
-
moneromooo
People usually define it as "it doesn't do what I think it should do" :)
-
d4ndo[m]
Let's face it, Bitcoin is a bit like Jupiter. Its gravity ensures that there are not so many impacts on Monero.

But - I have come to the conclusion that Blockchain scales best through diversity. A world dominating Blockchain with a gigantic block size cannot work so perfectly. You have to cut back on something. Surely there is a block chain out there that is suitable for microtransactions. One for privacy etc. So the whole ecosystem scales decentralized with many smaller blockchain.
-
hyc
I've talked about this a few times. IMO there should be independent chains per continent, using cross-chain atomic swap for intercontinental transactions
-
hyc
and possibly even smaller chains, all geographically based
-
d4ndo[m]
But why geographically and not by use case?
-
hyc
because that improves latency
-
d4ndo[m]
Is that a thingß
-
d4ndo[m]
?
-
hyc
WDY mean of course it's a thing
-
hyc
just ask any miner
-
hyc
if you want scaling, which means you want to maximize the headroom of transactions per second, you have to optimize latency too
-
hyc
how can you even pretend to be discussing scalability without taking that into account?
-
asymptotically
would probably be a requirement if you ever wanted to run a node on mars, since by time you get a block there'd be so many more waiting for you to download :)
-
hyc
indeed
-
hyc
impossible to sync a single blockchain across interplanetary distances
-
hyc
nodes will never catch up to other side
-
d4ndo[m]
interesting. I haven't thought about that yet.
-
d4ndo[m]
But it must also be mentioned that the global backbone will increase in capacity. New technologies in fiber optics etc.
-
hyc
-
hyc
increase in capacity = fatter pipes. can carry more packets per second.
-
hyc
cannot decrease latency. speed of light is an absolute speed limit, regardless of how fat the pipes.
-
d4ndo[m]
thx for the link.
-
moneromooo
Generate every possible block. When you know which one's the right one, destroy all universes except the one with the right block. Latency was ~0 in that one.
-
guernsey
hyc for writing such a article u must have solved all your earth problems
-
guernsey
congratulations
-
hyc
guernsey: don't be stupid. look at how many inventions that spun off of NASA's Apollo missions that are now commonplace household items

hyc
when you focus on solving future problems, you get a payoff in present-day solutions.
-
guernsey
there are very few people and very powerful that wont let u anywhere
-
guernsey
they dont let u go out of your house so dont expect mars
-
moneromooo
There's a sweet spot really. Enough short term to tide you over so you don't DoS yourself with unapplicable stuff, enough long term that you don't crash after all the short term's used up.
-
guernsey
tickets are finished they are selled before many years
-
hyc
doesn't even matter. if you can solve the problems of scaling a network to Mars, you can vastly improve the operability of networks on Earth

for example we cannot solve the most easy ones

If I want to just add Tor support to my existing public node, whats the best way to go about that? I want it to be available via RPC and p2p via Tor, but not exclusively
-
fort3hlulz
I went through
github.com/monero-project/monero/blob/master/ANONYMITY_NETWORKS.md, but its a bit vague (to me) on how to actually just add p2p/RPC support over torsocks *in addition* to clearnet
-
gingeropolous
prop up some tor tunnels and point them at the monero ports .... well, i think.
-
fort3hlulz
It may be as simple as adding a hidden service to 18080/18089

But it's not clear if that's actually the right route to go

maybe helps .. dont take my word for it though

I'll run through that for i2p, thanks dsc_

yeah but because of issues with the daemon you can almost never send txs with i2p

right, so i'm giving i2p another shot
-
mmxxx[m]
what is this good for

because with tor i can browse normally?

kinghat[m]
you cant browse the interwebs via i2p. well its not built for that but there are a few outproxies.

so this is a cordoned off internet with nobody on it? o_0

Proxy error: Host is down

ransack.i2p searches in i2p, tor, and clearnet

for now
-
mmxxx[m]
might try zeronet
-
endor00[m]
i2p is basically like tor but only onion services
-
gingeropolous
<endor00[m]>
legwork.i2p if you need a search engine inside i2p , nice
-
endor00[m]
And no entry/exit nodes, everyone is a peer and router
-
endor00[m]
(Which is a better model imo, though it comes with a bit of a performance penalty)
-
gingeropolous
well not if more people were running it
-
gingeropolous
that and if somehow they got IPFS in their somehow
-
endor00[m]
Official stats say ~50k routers around the world
-
endor00[m]
And my fast router only ever sees ~4k people at all times
-
endor00[m]
<gingeropolous "that and if somehow they got IPF"> There are a bunch of ipfs inproxies/mirrors in i2p
-
endor00[m]
Same for zeronet, I'm pretty sure I've seen at least one
-
gingeropolous
i just meant for the i2p network itself. seems an ideal environment for what is effectively a decentralized CDN
-
yanmaani
IPFS over I2P/Tor is completely stupid
-
endor00[m]
why?
-
endor00[m]
(genuine question, I have no idea why)
-
yanmaani
Because the intermediate nodes don't do any caching, and because IPFS is stupid
-
yanmaani
If you want "IPFS over I2P," there is a project from the 2000s which does that job in a more efficient way called "Freenet"
-
yanmaani
There is also ZeroNet, which is BitTorrent over Tor, and that works better for most practical purposes.
-
kinghat[m]
iirc BT over Tor is not awesome for anyone
-
kinghat[m]
BT over i2p is betterer
-
yanmaani
in theory, sure. in practice, no - i2p is extremely slow and is misconstructed
-
gingeropolous
ah yeah freenet
-
gingeropolous
jtgrassie, ure pools killin it

yanmaani
It's a shame there's no working P2Pool for Monero. I have a half-baked idea for how to fix the block time problem, but I'm not sure if it's incentive-compatible

does it only stop working on your computer or on the whole network?

walletcon
i went thru really strange things lately
-
moneromooo
Try --no-igd. If it still does it, it's likely your router's fault or your ISP's.
-
moneromooo
Maybe they don't like too many connections being made. monerod tries to connect to known node addresses to find peers.
-
moneromooo
To test this, you might want to select one particular outgoing connection, then restart monerod with: --add-exclusive-node THATIP
-
moneromooo
If your internet connection doesn't drop again, it's likely the reason.
-
moneromooo
Also, check your router logs. They might mention something.
-
moneromooo
Note that --add-exclusive-node THATIP:PORT is just for testing, it's not a good idea to have that otherwise.
-
walletcon
i will check router logs right away
-
walletcon
could it be the router firewall?
-
walletcon
i just see its on medium, low is off
-
walletcon
also, i just noticed its the gui wallet, i get green dots at certain times
-
walletcon
it okay now but was mining once and was pretty enjoyable
-
moneromooo
It could be the router firewall, sure. Or not.
-
moneromooo
Basically if it's on your computer, it's probably not the culprit since it cuts off the whole house.
-
moneromooo
It's probably something else that reacts to what monerod does.
-
walletcon
ill test it for a while, i worry tbh i wouldn't like strange things to happen again
-
moneromooo
Like, something on the router gets out of memory and restarts, maybee.
-
walletcon
but wasn't mining before, yet i was on ubuntu , a firewall sounds acceptable
-
walletcon
thanks for your help btw

np, let us know if you work it out, I've heard that kind of thing before, but no idea why ye.
