freebsd pkg still at 15.05 and can't get 0.16 to compile =/
-
scoobybejesus
V0.16 compiled fine for me. Did you checkout the branch?
-
scoobybejesus
I wanna say I just followed the readme
-
scoobybejesus
I mentioned here in the last week about the package/port not being updated yet
-
scoobybejesus
I wonder if anyone can email the committer
-
AlexAnarcho
Quick question: After downloading 0.16 GUI - the Dandelion++ is already active, right?
-
Steven_M
Hi, does monerod need udp or tcp open?
-
selsta
Steven_M: tcp
-
selsta
and optionally port 53 udp/tcp for dns
-
selsta
AlexAnarcho: if you connect to a v0.16 node yes
-
Steven_M
selsta: thought so, thanks :-)
-
Steven_M
I'm having isp port troubles. :-(
-
» Steven_M will be back later
-
endor00[m]
<Steven_M "moneromooo: yeah, my VPN is forw"> Check the order of the arguments. I have the impression that if you pass the rpc-port setting before the rpc-ip in the config file, it does not bind to the port you want
-
endor00[m]
(Or maybe it's the other way around, don't recall for sure, but I do remember having a similar issue)
-
duso
scoobybejesus: I am buliding monerod in a jail on my freenas box, I think some of the base jail libaries are old or something.
-
Jackman2
hi
-
scoobybejesus
duso, are your jails on FreeBSD 11.3? i'm on plain ol FreeBSD, but maybe i can spin up an older jail and see what it says. or do you wanna paste the compiler output?

the guy is joking but he's right
-
yanmaani
it is great new for dash and zcash
-
yanmaani
now the exchanges will be interested in dealing with them
-
selsta
zcash is already listed almost everywhere
-
selsta
coinbase, gemini, ...
-
hyc
doesn't matter. the only reason zcash exists is to offer privacy. now everyone should know that it's bunk. zcash has never worked as advertised.
-
hyc
now it has no reason to exist at all.
-
moneromooo
It does. They're constantly talking through both sides of the mouth, selling "transparent" to who wants this and "private" to who wants that. It's not very ethical, but hey, it works.
-
yanmaani
you underestimate the KYC crowd
-
yanmaani
say it with me: NUMBER GO UP
-
cjd
ouch
-
cjd
the whole crazy math thing with zcash didn't work afterall ?
-
yanmaani
hyc: They're just tracking the in/out from the shielded pools as I udnerstand it
-
yanmaani
oops that was for cjd, or I guess both of you
-
cjd
ahh ok
-
yanmaani
What has happened to Dash/Zcash/Monero on these TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE news?
-
yanmaani
zcash is up 1.67%
-
yanmaani
dash is up 0.91%
-
yanmaani
monero is up 3.71%
-
hyc
stupid markets....
-
hyc
yanmaani: just tracking in/out from shielded pools is enough. "So even though the obfuscation on Zcash is stronger due to the zk-SNARK encryption, Chainalysis can still provide the transaction value and at least one address for over 99% of ZEC activity,"
-
yanmaani
yeah people are idiots

because I'm talking to you

so, the was published "2:48 PM", which I think is 15:48 UTC. At that time, looking at the charts, DASH was entirely flat, and both ZEC and XMR rose sharply

> [non-custodial mixers, chain hopping, privacy coins, more anon p2p exchanges] would give criminals[sic] more ways to hide their cryptocurrency activity and make transactions more difficult to track. Nonetheless, we feel confident that[sic] with collaboration between cryptocurrency businesses, law enforcement, regulators, and blockchain analysis companies like Chainalysis, we’re [Chainalysis] more than
-
yanmaani
capable of meeting the challenge.
-
yanmaani
what's this mean?
-
moneromooo
This means "we spy on what we can, and we rely on the govt to protect our business model^W^W^W^Wshut down the rest hard".
-
yanmaani
in other words, it means that they don't feel confident at all?
-
moneromooo
I don't read it that way. But such bullshit is always confident, whether they're confident or not.
-
hyc
it means their grasp is tenuous
-
moneromooo
It means they're calling daddy for help, and they expect to get it.

I think by the following ranking 1) fair with no premine, 2) not tracked by any chain analysis company, 3) sorted by market cap
-
Jackman2
there is this theory that with the FATF travel rule, some non-compliant exchanges will appear, and that users from those exchanges will use monero to transfert their coins between non-compliant and compliant exchanges to hide the fact that they use non-compliant exchanges
-
binaryFate
Monero is n°1
-
Jackman2
what's your opinion on this?
-
Jackman2
hyc give me your expert opinion
-
hyc
what is the point of using the two different exchanges you refer to?
-
yanmaani
this conversations seems entirely disjointed to me
-
binaryFate
Jackman2: the travel rule only apply to VASP (exchanges in your example). You can break the travel rule obligations by simply sending to your personal wallet in between. You don't need a non-FATF-compliant exchange for that.
-
Jackman2
to use the compliant one to withdraw to fiat
-
Jackman2
idk
-
yanmaani
you're talking to some crackpot who I can't see, so I can only guess at the insanity going on here
-
Jackman2
I need a non compliant exchange to trade
-
moneromooo
Yeah, the Jackman2 nick was some troll, you can disregard anything from that.

hi malena[m]
-
yanmaani
oh boy, reading the catamites' report and just got to the part about TERRRRRRISM FINANCING, it's great
-
yanmaani
they all reuse addresses apparently
-
yanmaani
[T]he AQB website began displaying a message inviting users to “donate to the jihad”[sic] with a QR code underneath[sic] leading to a single Bitcoin address.
-
yanmaani
That Bitcoin address was associated with an account at a U.S.-based, regulated exchange. Law enforcement was quickly able to alert the exchange, have the account frozen, and investigate the individual who established[sic] it at the exchange, as well [sic] as transactions that contributed to that account.
-
yanmaani
(also, why are they hiring third worlders to write their reports? Aren't they supposed to be serious guys?)
-
Jackman2
that's a lot of sic

Hmm, so I watched an old chainalysis webinar, and they did say that they had zcash and dash coming soon, which we saw today. But they didn't answer any questions about Monero, more than hinting that the liquidity was poor
-
hyc
Same thing with their webinar 10 days ago
-
hyc
they have nothing
-
yanmaani
yeah that was the one
-
yanmaani
I'm surprised. Couldn't they at least do some very neutered version?
-
hyc
d4ndo[m]: why is the distribution of txs/day interesting?
-
d4ndo[m]
You could at least detect some anomaly.
-
d4ndo[m]
And then guess about it.
-
d4ndo[m]
I'm just playing with the data a bit.
-
d4ndo[m]
And no - i am not an employee of chainalysis. XD
-
yanmaani
surprised how nobody's created an assassination market for the chainalysis guys yet
-
philogy
people who really care about anonymity can just use privacy coins like Monero so they don't have to worry about having to assassinate anyone.

d4ndo[m]
Math is more reliable than guns.

I'm open minded to murder
-
d4ndo[m]
Monsanto!?
-
KrishnAncap[m]
you wanna murder Monsanto guys?
-
d4ndo[m]
I'd rather hack their minds. Convinve them to do the opposite.
-
endor00[m]
<yanmaani "Hmm, so I watched an old chainal"> Maybe that's why the number of Monero transactions has been increasing for a while: they generate new outputs that can end up in legit transactions and then use those to untangle the web of decoys.
-
endor00[m]
Combine that with poor opsec and information pulled from nodes, and you might get close enough to get a flag
-
d4ndo[m]
The problem with Monsanto is they destroy biodiversity with their poison. So you can't vote with your feet and you just can't buy the dirt.
-
endor00[m]
After all, 10k tx/day at today's fees is what, 100$/day? Maybe even less? For a company their size, that's peanuts
-
d4ndo[m]
What if the NSA did the same thing. Would that increase the entropy again.
-
Quotes
NSA? Morono protects me.
-
endor00[m]
I would assume that if an org like the NSA were in on it, they would definitely be aware of Chainalysis' attempts, and would surely find a way to get a copy of the information they dig up
-
endor00[m]
After all, what's the point of being the NSA if you can't even force a national company to hand over their data
-
yanmaani
One solution to this could be to have the amount of users statically determined with each release, and then use that instead of n transactions
-
yanmaani
so instead of saying, find N transactions out of k (where N is hardcoded), say "find N/n*k transactions out of k" (where n is the total estimated user count)
-
endor00[m]
Unless I am misreading something, this exact problem was analysed in the MRL-0001 paper in 2014:
web.getmonero.org/resources/research-lab/pubs/MRL-0001.pdf
-
endor00[m]
With 10 mixins, one such attack would have to control ~90% of the available tx outputs to uncover 1% of the new transactions over a specified time frame, so as long as at least 10% of the network is made of legit transactions, the odds of them pulling that off is relatively low
-
endor00[m]
However, 100$/day in transaction fees is a pretty low entry barrier for such an attack
-
d4ndo[m]
Interesting.
-
hyc
yeah, flooding attack, already well researched
