hello
-
newyearday
im trying to start new fork but when hardfork version is chnaged from 1 to 12 i have always "has old version" message
-
newyearday
so is possible to start with latest change only by changing hardfork version ?

<xmr-romine> Hello,
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> Probably a silly question, so apologies in advance.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> Is it possible to write **messages** in the monero blockchain ? I didn't see anything close to that, but maybe I didn't search enough.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> I have seen the ability to prove payments with viewkeys, but that concerns only payment exhibition.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> It would be very interesting to be able to exhibit messages with viewkeys also.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> Thanks
-
Mochi101
no, it's not possible
-
Mochi101
txs with messages would be a security risk
-
asymptotically
can't you put whatever you want in tx_extra?
-
Mochi101
asymptotically, isn't tx_extra just local?
-
asymptotically
there's a description local to your wallet. tx_extra field is part of the transaction, it's where the payment id goes too
-
asymptotically
that's how \x wrote nice messages to us, he put them as the unencrypted payment id and they showed up in the block explorer in tx_extra
-
Mochi101
hmmm
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> Thanks both for your answers.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> Is it possible to write tx_extra thru the GUI ? or it's only available via the CLI or RPC ?
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> Thanks both for your answers. π

-
Mochi101
Unencrypted payment ids are no longer possible
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> I imagine that there were reasons to remove such message abilities.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> But it seems me that this is a serious lack for the monero ecosystem.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> If I manage a website or onionsite dedicated to monero services and/or with monero payment, it would be nice to be able to have the validation parts also doable with the monero blockchain. If this is to be done with eg the bitcoin blockchain ... that hurts a bit π
-
Mochi101
xmr-romine: what're you trying to do?
-
Mochi101
You can create an address with an encrypted payment id for every tx or you can create a sub-address for each tx so that you can keep track of what they're used for.
-
Mochi101
So if someone orders something from you, you create a sub-address and store it with the order details in your db. When a payment comes in you look in your db to match it up with the order that uses the sub-address for the payment.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> Mochi101 : for example, I have an onion site, and some onion page I want to publicly validate. So my idea was eg to do a hash a the page, and to write it publicly in the monero blockchain.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> But of course, there may be other/better way to do that.
-
Mochi101
yes... I wanted to implement something similar myself... it's not possible

<xmr-romine> I'm 100% of with sub-addresses use for payments. That's indeed very convenient. Thanks to the devs !
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> Maybe something is doable by using the small digits of the payment field. Not a lot of bytes, but better than nothing.
-
asymptotically
it's probably best to use something designed for it, like opentimestamps
-
asymptotically
as for stuffing your own things in the tx's extra field, i think you're still allowed but i'd guess you have to make the transaction yourself
-
asymptotically
instead of using cli/gui/rpc wallet
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> asymptotically , Thanks, could you suggest some doc about making transaction oneself ?
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> I'm 100% ok with sub-addresses use for payments. That's indeed very convenient. Thanks to the devs !
-
Mochi101
3rd party stuff isn't very convenient... :(
-
Mochi101
But Monero has its goals, so it's understandable.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> Lunch time. I'll be afk. Thanks so much for the discussion !
-
Mochi101
asymptotically, Minko did 10 years of hashes to verify the integrity of the game just before payment IDs were made obsolete:
minko.to/static/media/hashes.7d175b13.txt
-
Mochi101
Now this is no longer possible.
-
asymptotically
10 years of hashes for a game that is a couple of years old?
-
asymptotically
ohhh, hashes they will use as seeds in the future?
-
Mochi101
hashes of the seeds yes
-
asymptotically
-
Mochi101
hmmm

Hey
-
textmate
so uh
-
textmate
I recently recovered my wallet with the word keys
-
textmate
im using monero-wallet-gui
-
textmate
and essentially the problem I have is: The wallet is synced but my balance is 0.0
-
textmate
and there is no transaction histoir
-
moneromooo
Search the options for something called "refresh height" or similar. If its value is later than when you received your first monero, reset it to < that (0 is always ok, but slower) and rescan.
-
textmate
moneromooo: going to try that now, thanks!
