hyc
I've just restarted my public node with pruning enabled
-
hyc
presumably that shouldn't hurt anyone using it
-
riceandbeans
Would someone have problems if they were using monerod on v0.14.1.2-release ?
-
riceandbeans
If so, what is the upgrade procedure to get on 0.15.1?
-
selsta
riceandbeans: Yes, you would be on the wrong chain.
-
selsta
You simply download the new version and use it.
-
riceandbeans
Well, I have to build it.
-
selsta
should be ok too
-
riceandbeans
I just started playing with it last night and ran monerod from the binary packages and it was catching up on the ledger, which....has taken time.....but it kept complaining about errors near the end
-
riceandbeans
So I figured I'd ask
-
selsta
What version did you use?
-
selsta
Also what errors?
-
riceandbeans
0.14.1.2
-
riceandbeans
One sec
-
riceandbeans
But also, in moving to 0.15 will I have a new wallet address?
-
riceandbeans
2019-12-20 01:52:40.422 W [162.237.24.165:18080 OUT] peer claims higher version that we think (12 for 1992669 instead of 11) - we may be forked from the network and a software upgrade may be needed
-
riceandbeans
That's been getting frequent
-
selsta
yes
-
riceandbeans
sadness.
-
selsta
wait
-
selsta
no, you won’t get a new address
-
selsta
you are using outdated software, Monero had a network upgrade
-
selsta
the error will go away once you update to v0.15
-
riceandbeans
Will I have to start the ledger update from scratch?
-
selsta
Ledger update?
-
riceandbeans
Isn't that what it's doing?
-
riceandbeans
Downloading and validating all the old transactions to be caught up
-
selsta
Sorry, I thought you are talking about Ledger hardware wallet
-
riceandbeans
Like litecoin or bitcoin
-
selsta
02:56 <riceandbeans> Will I have to start the ledger update from scratch? <-- no
-
riceandbeans
Sorry, maybe I phrased it weird
-
selsta
just run v0.15 monerod, it will sync with the network again
-
riceandbeans
Anyway, answer seems to be no :P it's at 77%
-
selsta
you don’t have to sync from scratch
-
riceandbeans
I don't remember setting a password last night, but I have a string of words, but it wants a password now
-
selsta
Just press enter.
-
riceandbeans
Thanks
-
riceandbeans
Is it possible to set/change the password later?
-
selsta
yep
-
riceandbeans
Oh man, new features
-
riceandbeans
Now when I'm idle it locks the wallet, asks for the password, and puts a message with cowsay
-
selsta
you can change the lock time or disable it :P
-
riceandbeans
I like the idea, honestly.
-
riceandbeans
I had a lot of idle cloud stuff sitting around, I have them mining casually now, though I think my mining power is probably terrible
-
riceandbeans
I have 2.5KH/s
-
riceandbeans
I'm might spread it to the rest of my crap and get that to 4x that or so but...yeah....calculators seem to say that won't net much lol
-
riceandbeans
Do you guys usually just buy XMR or do you usually mine it?
-
syntax[m]
I've settled for buying Bitcoin, then buying Monero through LocalMonero.
-
riceandbeans
You trade BTC for XMR?
-
syntax[m]
<riceandbeans "You trade BTC for XMR?"> riceandbeans: yep. I have a Coinbase account so just buy BTC when I need (which is rarely because I was once gifted a fair amount), then every month or so I trade for Monero.
-
Inge-
syntax[m]: Why not get a Kraken account? then you can buy XMR directly with fiat :P
-
nonie
If you do NOT like kyc and centralised exchanges - i can recommend »Bisq«.
-
Inge-
well, he was using COinbase
-
azy
isn't bisq just other crypto?
-
jae
Hey
-
asymptotically
azy: some people on bisq accept bank transfers
-
azy
i want more cash deposit options
-
azy
remember the good old days of cash deposit to er... that japanese place that sold bitcoin
-
azy
i'd go down to the bank with str8kash and by the time i got home there were bitcoins waiting for me
-
asymptotically
mtgox? <3
-
asymptotically
mark did nothing wrong
-
azy
it might have been, but i dont think so
-
azy
probably was, i cant think of any other name
-
azy
btw mark was DPR
-
maxwilliamson
what is bisq anyway
-
azy
a crypto exchange whos infrastructure and code is closer to bittorrent than a typical exchange
-
maxwilliamson
that involves a bank account, right?
-
azy
presumably you tell a buyer your bank account details if youre selling crypto for fiat
-
nonie
if you dislike the idea of living in a digital dictatorship or some similarly degraded form of society—then the most important contribution you can make is to find ways to prevent too much data from being concentrated in too few hands, and also find ways to keep distributed data processing more efficient than centralized data processing. quote Yuval Noah Havari
-
moneromooo
So kick Experian and Cloudflare in the nuts any time you have a chance.
-
nonie
So - Bisq helps you with that.
-
nonie
Yes.
-
nonie
also
-
rottensox
nonie: that quote came from a book, blog bost, podcast or?
-
syntax[m]
<Inge- "syntax: Why not get a Kraken acc"> I've heard Kraken is good, but if I can help it I don't want to go through the same process of having to send very sensitive info to an exchange (photo of ID etc) just for the privilege of being able to buy Bitcoin. Coinbase has worked fine for me so far. I never leave funds with them (transfer it to Trezor hardware wallet). Until I find an exchange which doesn't require such
-
syntax[m]
strict verification, I'll probably stick with Coinbase seeing as they already have all my sensitive info... Always open to suggestions though...
-
moneromooo
You don't have to send kyc for coinbase ?
-
moneromooo
Oh. Already. nvm.
-
moneromooo
Maybe what we need is a list of privacy respecting exchanges on getmonero.org...
-
moneromooo
It'll be pissing in the wind, but at least it's a try :)
-
moneromooo
(even if the list is empty)

nonie: How does Bisq handle counterparty risk?
-
M7918070_[m]
Bank transfers are reversible, right? So what if you buy crypto for $1000, get it, and then revoke the transfer?
-
M7918070_[m]
Or the other way, what if you buy crypto for $1000, then the seller's account gets frozen due to KYC?
-
nioc
they have an escrow and as far as I know bank transfers are not reversable
-
M7918070_[m]
"they have an escrow" What do you mean?
-
M7918070_[m]
Bank transfers are reversible. "Completely non-reversible transactions are not really possible, since financial institutions cannot avoid mediating disputes ... With the possibility of reversal, the need for trust spreads. Merchants must be wary of their customers, hassling them for more information than they would otherwise need."
-
M7918070_[m]
LocalBitcoins sellers almost always want KYC, and cash deals are very rare.
-
asymptotically
didn't localbitcoins add KYC site-wide?
-
nioc
not sure of the details but the escrow is a trusted 3rd party and funds are not released until certain conditions are met
-
nioc
yeah local btc is kyc now
-
M7918070_[m]
Is this escrow for both buyer and seller then?
-
nioc
It's been a while since I checked the details so..... I imagine that you can get the info from the bisq site
-
nioc
did they change the name from bisq?
-
M7918070_[m]
They solve it by limiting new accounts to 0.01 BTC per trade
-
M7918070_[m]
What prevents you from making several 0.01 BTC transactions however I don't know
-
M7918070_[m]
If you've made a trade and >30 days have passed, then your account is signed and can trade without as well as sign other accounts.
-
nonie
M7918070_[m]: Tradeing in fiat always has a risk. If you trade in cash it could be counterfeilt money. If you trade on a centralised exchange see MtGox or they sell your data.
-
asymptotically
nonie: mtgox did nothing wrong

It is not so easy to undo a SEPA transaktion. The attacker needs access to an hijacked bank account. <asshole>You could even sue the counter part or victim of the attack- because he is responsible for the security of his computer.</asshole>
