I would like to start a discussion regarding the long-term feasibility of paying for translations on an ongoing basis, and potential paths that we can follow to reduce the dependence of our translations on the CCS process
-
needbrrrrrrr90
There are dozens of major languages we could translate into, and by paying for their translation, I have a feeling we are in some way stifling the natural development of people trying to scratch their own itch (like much of the rest of our ecosystem)
-
needbrrrrrrr90
I do recognize that there is some degree of concern about professional translation vs half-assed work when relying on volunteer labor, and the ability to evaluate that work as being a good translation remains an issue
-
needbrrrrrrr90
It just feels like there should be some path to people voluntarily contributing translations, vs the expectation of payment
-
needbrrrrrrr90
ErCiccione I definitely have a pretty opaque view into the translation part of our operations, it would be nice to hear your thoughts on our current structure
-
ErCiccione[m]
needbrrrrrrr90: Translations are not dependend on CCS proposals at all. The vast majority of the work is done by volunteers, i think only 2-3 people in total since the creation of the localiation workgroup asked to be funded for translations and we have 105 translators on weblate only (even if not all of them are active) and we had about 60 active on pootle. I think the problem doesn't exist tbh.

needbrrrrrrr90
ah, I see
-
needbrrrrrrr90
I'm only seeing the tip of it, of course
-
selsta
I’m always impressed with how many translation contributors we have
-
ErCiccione[m]
yeah, i think the net of translators we have is quite good, people are usually responsive when i call for translators.
-
ErCiccione[m]
I personally welcome people to open CCS for translations needbrrrrrrr90. Those translators usually work on stuff that others don't work on (thinking about the boring parts of getmonero) and their work is under heaviear review. I think that is enough to push less people to open CCS and until now it works.

ErCiccione[m]
We should spread zero to monero v2 much more on social media IMO, it's a great resource.
-
Inge-
Who made the Monero youtube educational videos?
-
Inge-
I thought they were really good at explaining stuff in an easy-to-digest manner, but some of the info is kind of dated.
-
ErCiccione[m]
the animated ones? I think they were funded through a FFS, there should be contacts in the old forum
-
gingeropolous
does anyone know if there's a way to team up with antivirus companies and get them to actually check the the monero bins to stop them from being flaggeD?
-
gingeropolous
i.e., there software would check hashes etc
-
gingeropolous
their

Hyc, you wouldn't happen to have any professional contacts in the AV industry, would you?
-
hyc
nope

Relaying messages from several freenode channels to Mattermost has been temporarily disabled to work within new freenode data flooding limits
-
derpy_bridge
<[keybase] kaylasu>: @pigeons what are those limits? relaying messages to keybase / discord too so wondering if would be affected by that as well
-
needbrrrrrrr90
pigeons: do the freenode flood exemptions they've granted some bots like monerobux for particular rooms not work anymore?
-
needbrrrrrrr90
I know monerobux is exempt from flood in a number of our channels, is this a new development?
-
derpy_bridge
<[discord] Kayla#5718>: btw needbrrrrrrr90, gonna try to figure out how could re-write the bridge configs so it uses 4 different irc accounts so instead of "derpy_bridge" it would show "discord-monero", "discord-cypherpunkclub", "keybase-monero", "keybase-cypherpunkclub" but on discord / keybase side that would still be that 1 "derpy_bridge" bot
-
derpy_bridge
<[discord] Kayla#5718>: currently already having 2 vms on daily driver for the bridges, they each need like 4 GB RAM and 4 threads, tried with 2 threads but then there was a lot of latency which for direct messages isnt ideal, that's a 32GB RAM 2700x ryzen so should be okay on ressources
-
derpy_bridge
<[discord] Kayla#5718>: so figuring out if gonna do like 5 vms or still keeping the 2 but just with a re-write on the config file
-
derpy_bridge
<[discord] Kayla#5718>: pros of 5 vms would be, each irc acc would have diff ip, cons would be might be more resources heavy
-
derpy_bridge
<[discord] Kayla#5718>: or...... could even move them to the TR and then def no issues on resources (64GB RAM / 64 threads rig)
-
derpy_bridge
<[discord] Kayla#5718>: anyways, just woke up, just chillin, taking my time, might be done today or later, will see :3
-
derpy_bridge
<[discord] Kayla#5718>: eeeeeeh......
-
derpy_bridge
<[discord] Kayla#5718>: actually just realized that dividing it into multiple irc accounts would actually make the other platforms uglier.........
-
derpy_bridge
<[discord] Kayla#5718>: for example, between both discord it keeps the same profile pic, if doing multiple irc accounts then it would just relay to discord as the irc bridge rather the relaying from discord to discord on which its all cute and everything.....

Potential meetup group of interest given the first one entails talks by folk from Jitsi and Matrix, among others:

needbrrrrrrr90: yes this is a new development, I'll talk to freenode and let you know
-

xmrscott[m]: I rsvp'd. Not sure if I can actually make it though unfortunately so hopefully it is recorded
-
xmrscott[m]
I can always record it on OBS or something as a precaution, just let me know if you can't make it beforehand
-

okay, thanks
