So, as many of you know, fluffypony's reddit user account (fluffyponyza) was randomly suspended by reddit without communication. He made an appeal and it was closed without communication.

I would like to once again reopen the topic of deploying a self-hosted forum or alternative to Reddit that we can move to or have as a back up plan.

Whether this was done through troll reporting, malicious behavior, or intervention from the powers that be, it is worrying, and that we don't have a backup plan is silly in light of this situation.

Yes I do agree this is a very serious issue

It needs to be addressed across the community and the work groups

The forum will have to be designed with a high degree of redundancy so that one provider or state alone would not be able to shut it down

selsta: your opinion, if I may. Do you think people who run federated services (like Mastadon) on a VPS truly adds to decentralization? Since they don't actually have control of the machine, I mean.

also, one of the benefits of reddit is, that while one core team member was a mod (fluffypony), it was largely moderated by non-core team people, and wasn't owned and operated by core team either. In a sense, even though those people mostly follow the core team, it was still a distribution of power in communication.

if we do launch something else, should we see about it being hosted, paid for, and otherwise maintained by non-core team people, or would the easy logistics of getting one set up on core team infrastructure outweigh the cons of centralizing this point of communication

Mastadon is FOSS, self-hosted twitter alternative.

I, personally, want a reddit replacement. I despise reddit as a platform.

I’ve seen it but I’m not super familiar with it.

rehrar: I think the ideals you bring up are important to keep in mind, but I want to make sure it's actionable. Having server backups on another server is much simpler and I can tolerate some forum downtime in the worst case if it saves a huge headache

I find Reddit and forums to be different things.

Yes. People get on Reddit for a large number of reasons. Many topics all on one site and curated for you.

Rather than going one place per thing. Many accounts, etc. And yet, what do we do with what happened to fluffypony?
