selsta
these blocked hosts are the Tor exit nodes from yesterday
-
bacbank[m]
hey
-
shirley_huang[m]
when u receive monero how long does it take to show up? 🤔
-
sethsimmons
<bacbank[m] "hey"> Hey there!
-
sethsimmons
<shirley_huang[m] "when u receive monero how long d"> Are you receiving it to your own wallet or an exchange?
-
bacbank[m]
I'm having the same issue
-
shirley_huang[m]
directly to wallet
-
bacbank[m]
I've been waiting for hours
-
bacbank[m]
same
-
bacbank[m]
Is there a blockchain or something where I can check if it's on it's way?
-
sethsimmons
You can use exploremonero.com or xmrchain.net to verify the transaction went through on the senders end.
-
sethsimmons
No reason you should be waiting for more than 5m or so for it to show up in your wallet, unless the sender did something wrong or didn’t actually send funds.
-
sethsimmons
What wallet are you using?
-
zigozo
-
zigozo
Example Usage
-
zigozo
Monero CLI wallet: monero-wallet-cli --daemon-host node.xmr.to --daemon-port 18081
-
zigozo
Monerujo: 18.132.124.81:18081
-
bacbank[m]
I'm using the one on getmonero
-
bacbank[m]
Is there any way I can get the transaction ID?
-
zigozo
it should be right there if you sent, but if you're receiving you're trusting the sender if not sent to escrow.
-
zigozo
correct me if I'm wrong
-
zigozo
plus double, triple checking the xmr address to send/receive to doesn't hurt
-
bacbank[m]
I'm supposed to be receiving from an exchange
-
zigozo
there should be a TX id for the site itself
-
zigozo
if anything hit them up via email
-
bacbank[m]
it's newton.co where might I find this? yeah I've been emailing them and have to wait until tomorrow for a reply
-
zigozo
take screenshots
-
bacbank[m]
It's just my first monero transaction and it's very annoying to have it go this way
-
bacbank[m]
alright
-
zigozo
we all learn somehow. lol
-
bacbank[m]
guys were saying this was easier than bitcoin lmao
-
bacbank[m]
ffs
-
zigozo
I've found changenow.io has good CS, if you have a transaction hanging
-
h2017
in terms of difficulty it's no different from any other crypto
-
h2017
if an exchange doesn't send that's on them
-
bacbank[m]
I doubt they'd do this over a measly 100$
-
bacbank[m]
I hope wake up to good news tomorrow
-
bacbank[m]
thanks guys
-
zigozo
ecn if it's 5 bucks..
-
zigozo
still important
-
zigozo
-even-
-
nioc
you should be able to get the txid from the site without having to contact anyone
-
nioc
it's that way on any site that I have used
-
nioc
check the txid on a block explorer
-
nioc
if on the blockchain then you have your monero
-
nioc
if your wallet is not accessing the info on the blockchain............
-
nioc
depends on the wallet what you need to trouble shoot
-
bacbank[m]
<zigozo "still important"> agreed
-
bacbank[m]
<nioc "check the txid on a block explor"> I have no idea how to do this
-
bacbank[m]
Do you think you could find the txid of newton.co?
-
bacbank[m]
then I can use exploremonero to find it
-
nioc
just put in in the box at top where the search button is and click search
xmrchain.net
-
zigozo
should be on the webpage wherever the transaction took place
-
zigozo
cookies, etc
-
nioc
the txid should be in your withdrawal history
-
nioc
on newton
-
zigozo
I've not used the site, a good one should have all the details right there
-
zigozo
and quick..
-
nioc
every site that I have used has your withdrawal and/or transaction history
-
-
bacbank[m]
thats all i have there
-
zigozo
ah. you have to make an account?
-
sethsimmons
There isn’t a deposits/withdrawals page?
-
bacbank[m]
no the dep/with pages just give you the option to do it
-
bacbank[m]
this is the history
-
bacbank[m]
yeah
-
bacbank[m]
I should've done more research before starting
-
nioc
all O know is that newton is reputable
-
nioc
*all I
-
bacbank[m]
yeah which is why I felt it was safe
-
sethsimmons
Surely they show the withdrawal info, must be missing something.
-
sethsimmons
I’ve heard nothing but good things about Newton from reputable sources.
-
nioc
if you can't figure it out then you will have to wait for their support
-
zigozo
yeah, read reviews. it's pretty easy to see legit people giving reviews
-
-
bacbank[m]
yeah these are the only options
-
bacbank[m]
deposit, trade and withdraw
-
sethsimmons
Hit pending transfer
-
bacbank[m]
but yeah I'll wait for them to answer
-
sethsimmons
Bet it shows there
-
-
bacbank[m]
it's just a test 15$ that I never complete
-
zigozo
dang
-
sethsimmons
Yeah not sure then, hopefully their support can help.
-
bacbank[m]
yeah I hope so
-
sethsimmons
Not Canadian so haven’t tried them my selves ☹️
-
bacbank[m]
is there a better exchange I should use?
-
sethsimmons
Like I said I’ve heard great things about them
-
sethsimmons
Not sure if Kraken services Canada
-
bacbank[m]
doesn't kraken have really high fees?
-
sethsimmons
They’d be my top recommendation for KYC exchanges
-
sethsimmons
Not that I’ve noticed
-
zigozo
changenow works
-
sethsimmons
But I would t write off Newton from this, I’m sure it’s something simple.
-
bacbank[m]
alright
-
bacbank[m]
I'll see how it goes then
-
zigozo
I'm not sure of regional borders etc
-
sethsimmons
*wouldnt
-
zigozo
any TX should be done within 30mins
-
bacbank[m]
which is what they emailed me
-
bacbank[m]
next thing I know I'm waiting for 9 hours
-
zigozo
they're asleep? haha
-
bacbank[m]
yeah I have to wait till 9am et
-
bacbank[m]
est
-
sethsimmons
I can’t really grasp how their site doesn’t have an easy to view withdrawal history so I’m very confused haha
-
bacbank[m]
hahah the site does feel kinda simple
-
bacbank[m]
I think it's new or something
-
bacbank[m]
OMG
-
bacbank[m]
THE MONEY ARRIVED
-
bacbank[m]
thank you guys
-
zigozo
pow
-
sethsimmons
Ha nice
-
sethsimmons
Was your wallet already synced up completely when you started the withdrawal?
-
bacbank[m]
gosh I feel like a wait has been lifted off my shoulders and talking with you guys really calmed me down
-
sethsimmons
Glad to hear it 🙂
-
sethsimmons
Should stick around 😉
-
zigozo
haha. I've had to wait for the tx without a chatroom
-
zigozo
it's hard not to focus on till it's one.
-
bacbank[m]
haha must have been tough
-
bacbank[m]
yes
-
zigozo
_done_
-
bacbank[m]
I have literally been refreshing, creating new wallets and such for 9 hours
-
bacbank[m]
about that, I have 3 ''different'' wallets with the same primary adress, are they the same wallet or actually unique ones?
-
zigozo
write the seed phrases down, on paper
-
sethsimmons
All the same wallet, just unique accounts — can be thought of as different accounts (checking, saving) in the same bank
-
bacbank[m]
ohh alright
-
bacbank[m]
so money from one account wont show up in the other?
-
sethsimmons
Nope, they will stay distinct
-
bacbank[m]
damn thats good to know
-
sethsimmons
But all restore with the same seed
-
zigozo
there are sub addresses made from the origin wallet address
-
sethsimmons
You can always send between them if you’d like.
-
bacbank[m]
and if I lose the one with all the money in it is it over?
-
bacbank[m]
or can I log into other ones and recover
-
sethsimmons
The same seed restores all of them.
-
bacbank[m]
thank god
-
sethsimmons
If you’re referring to accounts properly.
-
sethsimmons
One wallet can have multiple accounts, and each account can have multiple subaddresses
-
bacbank[m]
so as long as I have the mnemonic seed I will never lose my accounts?
-
nioc
bacbank[m]: write down your seed and put it somewhere safe
-
sethsimmons
Yup 🙂
-
bacbank[m]
great thanks alot guys
-
nioc
then write it down again and put it somewhere else
-
sethsimmons
Keep that bad boy safe and secret.
-
nioc
and then a third time lol
-
bacbank[m]
will do!
-
zigozo
get it tatoo'd
-
sethsimmons
Please don’t lmao
-
bacbank[m]
I'm gonna call it a night fellas, thanks for helping me end the night on a good note
-
nioc
as long as you have that you have your keys and can access the blockchain with any monero wallet
-
sethsimmons
Enjoy 🙂
-
bacbank[m]
Thanks you!
-
zigozo
peace
-
nioc
gn :)
-
lza_menace
anyone know of projects or examples where someone charted wallet balances from the rpc interface?
-
lza_menace
chart.js or some simple javascript thing
-
gingeropolous
ah crap. i guess im running into another year for that supernode.
-
Lyza
the GUI auto updater, if you decline the update, does it ask you again when you next open the wallet, or how does that work?
-
selsta
yes, it asks you again
-
Lyza
Okay, just wondering cause somebody in r/MoneroSupport was on 0.16.0.2 and was all "I wish there was a reminder that popped up like in ledger live that alerts you of the latest version."
-
Lyza
so.... Idk, not sure how that happened
-
selsta
Lyza: the auto updater got added with 0.16.1 or so
-
Lyza
oh okay I thought it was added back in 0.15
-
Lyza
selsta actually this thread you say it was added in 0.16 and that 0.16.0.1 will be the first version available through the updater
reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/h139vq/new_gui_updater_in_v016/ftqrjhy
-
Lyza
so this user should have gotten a notice
-
selsta
which OS does the user have?
-
Lyza
I'll have to ask, and hope they come back to update the thread. which is here btw
reddit.com/r/monerosupport/comments…g_to_wait_for_transfer_from_binance
-
selsta
it says Windows
-
Lyza
doh, thanks lol
-
selsta
-
selsta
you can download v0.16.0.2 yourself and check if it shows up
-
selsta
I don't have Windows machine here
-
selsta
it should show up theoretically
-
Lyza
huh, this goes from 0.16.0.1 to 0.16.0.3
-
selsta
-
selsta
was wrong link
-
Lyza
got it
-
selsta
hmm I know why it does not pop up
-
selsta
hashes.txt updated to v0.17.1.5
-
selsta
until we update the auto updater it will not show up
-
Lyza
makes sense. yeah I'm not seeing the notification either
-
Lyza
is there a better way to do that to avoid temporarily breaking the updater?
-
selsta
Not with the current setup.
-
Lyza
unfortunate
-
Lyza
what if hashes.txt also included hashes of the previous version?
-
selsta
not ideal
-
selsta
people are already confused about having cli and gui in one file
-
Lyza
definitely agree it's not ideal, just trying to think of what could be done without changing the implementation
-
Lyza
true true
-
Lyza
maybe just make it a point to do the auto-updater more concurrent with the actual release
-
moneromooo
Add version number to the filename ?
-
Lyza
that wouldn't fix the updater for older releases I think but sounds good to do going forward maybe
-
Lyza
unless I'm missing a piece which, entirely possible. like uhh, could keep hashes.txt at the previous version until the auto updater is updated
-
Lyza
if we additionally have versioned hashes.txt files. would prolly break some people's update workflow
-
Lyza
but c'est la vie
-
selsta
auto updater and dns being delay 1-2 days is intentional to catch major bugs
-
selsta
like the issue we had with the gui on linux
-
selsta
where it would not start
-
selsta
delayed*
-
Lyza
+1 that's completely reasonable. but if we released a new version with a hashes.newversion.txt and waited to update hashes.txt until we actually want to push out the auto update, I think that would work. I think is maybe also what moneromooo was suggesting
-
gingeropolous
-
moneromooo
You can have hashes.txt symlink to the one you want to be the one you advertise.
-
moneromooo
(ie, the one the updated would look for)
-
moneromooo
/ted/ter/
-
moneromooo
Then again I dunno the details of how it works.
-
moneromooo
Does anyone use mine btw ? And does it still work ? :D
-
Lyza
you made an updater?
-
moneromooo
Yes.
-
Lyza
point me to it I'm curious
-
moneromooo
Not touched in ages though.
-
moneromooo
-
Lyza
nice I would consider using it for the CLI I think, might test er out later
-
selsta
-
selsta
the more people update the faster dandelion transactions will get :)
-
selsta
Lyza: auto updater should be enabled now
-
selsta
in case you want to test v0.16.0.2 again :D

Where can one read about Monero's release notes here ?
getmonero.org/2020/11/25/monero-0.17.1.5-released.html
-
selsta
"Some highlights of this minor release are:"
-
matthewcroughan_
more specifically, about this "dandelion++" and "fluff", "embargos" and "anonymity networks"
-
matthewcroughan_
These release notes mean nothing to anyone but the most core advocates who I'm sure have been paying attention to #monero-dev
-
matthewcroughan_
-
matthewcroughan_
Alright, so I have some reading to do.
-
matthewcroughan_
Amazing commit messages, thanks vtnerd
-
Ymgve
just google it
-
selsta
the release notes are not the place to explain what Dandelion++ is
-
selsta
-
selsta
this article is good
-
selsta
also commit messages for more in depth, yea
-
matthewcroughan_
I heard about dandelion from Andreas Antonopolous like a year ago, still vague in my head :D
-
matthewcroughan_
OH dear, maybe it's not the same thing hah
-
vtnerd
yeah the changes were too important to leave info solely on github
-
moneromooo
You might know it as taraxacum.
-
Ymgve
there also was a link to a description when dandelion++ was introduced
getmonero.org/2020/05/23/monero-0.16-released.html
-
Ymgve
I don't think every parameter change should come with a full description of the tech
-
matthewcroughan_
I've been out of the loop for quite some time.
-
matthewcroughan_
You're right, but it's amazing how alien those release notes look, having been out of it for a long time.
-
matthewcroughan_
It does look like buzzword bingo.
-
selsta
fluff embargo :D
-
moneromooo
Latest skirmish in the pony trade wars.
-
matthewcroughan_
So. Is the tl;dr of dandelion that hosting my monero node is much like hosting a Tor exit node? Dangerous and known to the snooping world? *until* Dandelion?
-
matthewcroughan_
Or is it that *transacting* using a wallet is like that? Not running a node.
-
Ymgve
it means no one can see which node generated a transaction
-
matthewcroughan_
Awesome. So is this similar to LN nodes?
-
Ymgve
pretty sure LN doesn't do anything like that
-
moneromooo
Before dandelion, it's like hosting a normal server. Like httpd. After dandelion, it's more like direct connect.
-
matthewcroughan_
Could have sworn a year ago I heard Andreas Antonopolous talking about "dandelion protocol" on LN like a year ago on a podcast.. hmm
-
moneromooo
A bit betewen direct connect and tor I guess.
-
moneromooo
It was originally made for Bitcoin.
-
matthewcroughan_
Have there been any changes since 2018 that would mean I have to generate a new wallet to see benefits? Like segwit on bitcoin?
-
moneromooo
No.
-
vtnerd
Andreas may have been talking about onion-like routing for LN, where each hop only knows the node directly before and after it
-
matthewcroughan_
that's right vtnerd
-
matthewcroughan_
-
vtnerd
this is similar only in that it involves privacy, but is for a slightly different purpose
-
vtnerd
the objective is to reduce the linkability between an ip and tx, if an attacker has lots of sybil nodes
-
vtnerd
in other words, reduce the ability to statistical track the origin by running lots of nodes/connections
-
matthewcroughan_
Lol the way Andreas explains mimblewimble is incredibly fun.
-
matthewcroughan_
Lol @ all the people that pumped grin to $5, not understanding any of the tech behind it.
-
matthewcroughan_
vtnerd: ah, dandelion as he explains it is BIP156
-
matthewcroughan_
-
vtnerd
that bip and dandelion++ are slightly different, but the objectives are the same
-
vtnerd
and general flow - the biggest difference is the process is _not_ interactive now
-
matthewcroughan_
what does "interactive" mean in this context?
-
matthewcroughan_
requiring user input?
-
vtnerd
and there is no patch for dandelion++ against Bitcoin, which is why all of the clones have Dandelion and not Dandelion++. And don't seem to know the difference much
-
vtnerd
no, it would probe a remote node to determine capabilities
-
vtnerd
each node now forwards to node without asking it for whether dandelion++ is enabled/available
-
vtnerd
since the last hard-fork release had dandelion++ support, most nodes should support it now
-
matthewcroughan_
vtnerd: Is there no downside to doing that?
-
moneromooo
You can get a short path. But since people update, it's short lived.
-
matthewcroughan_
> it was recently applied to Monero by developer Lee Clagett (vtnerd) :O
-
matthewcroughan_
> was approved by moneromooo
-
matthewcroughan_
Lol. That's how you know something is awesome. When everything still happens in IRC.
-
vtnerd
yeah who needs emoticons and gifs
-
matthewcroughan_
Or javascript that makes your CPU run at 90C
-
Ymgve
thats just the website mining crypto in the background
-
gingeropolous
does the current dandelion++ ban a node if an origination results in no detected fluff within the timeframe?
-
sech1
Not likely. You can't know which node didn't propagate the transaction, so you can't just ban your first peer in the stem chain
-
vtnerd
no, that deviation from whitepaper is probably too harsh
-
vtnerd
yes, as sech1 said
-
gingeropolous
indeed, to both.
-
gingeropolous
and u can't really send out probes because malicious nodes could just relay the probe signal but then block actual txs
-
gingeropolous
heh. i wonder if you could split the tx into two parts, then send it off on 2 stems.
-
gingeropolous
twixt the twain shall meet is where something happens
-
gingeropolous
well thats some garbledygook for yah
-
gingeropolous
but yeah. so the message is garbage unless you have the second part
-
gingeropolous
but u could always just blackhole
-
gingeropolous
however, if your node can get disconnected because probe signals indicate you're blackholing things, then ... you have to relay everything you get
-
gingeropolous
hrm yes yes. someone pour some coffee on this thought and put it in the sun.
-
sech1
you have a point. If you can't distinguish between the real tx and a probe, you have to relay everything. Now the question is how to make probes look like tx
-
sech1
without making actual tx. It's probably impossible.
-
selsta
I sent a transaction today and it showed up in ~5 seconds in the mempool :D
-
selsta
the v0.17.1.5 parameter changes are probably helping here
-
nioc
selsta: just tried and I got 45 to 50 seconds which is a time frame that did not happen before
-
nioc
before it was either quickly added or most likely 3.5 minutes to 4.5 minutes
-
selsta
if there is a timeout it should take 30-50 seconds now
-
selsta
without timeout < 5
-
nioc
ok
-
sech1
vtnerd So if a 0.17.1.5 node is surrounded by older nodes, will it always fluff first? Isn't it hurting Dandelion++ goals?
-
gingeropolous
well only 4 months out from a potential hardfork, so .... soon it'll be fine i guess
-
gingeropolous
how to make probes look like tx
-
gingeropolous
<sech1> without making actual tx. It's probably impossible. >>> thats why I was thinking we could split the tx somehow, using cryptomaths
-
vtnerd
sech1 : I'd have to think about it some more, but doesn't seem to be terrible offhand. there's a bias towards nodes that upgraded but not a bias to nodes earlier in the stem
-
gingeropolous
so node takes tx A, then does encodes it as something and then splits that, so you get A^1 and A^2. Node then sends A^1 out to peer A and A^2 out to peer B ....
-
gingeropolous
A stems out to A[1-6] and B sends out to B[1-6], and the union of A and B is where something happens.....
-
gingeropolous
i guess an array isn't the best way to denote the stem initiated by A..
-
dEBRUYNE
I genuinely doubt we'll have a scheduled protocol upgrade in 4 months..
-
dEBRUYNE
Also Reddit thread titles cannot be edited, I will add a new thread soon
-
hyc
there's nothing in the works that will be ready in 4 months.
-
hyc
ready as in fully audited
-
dEBRUYNE
Right
-
nioc
-
nioc
seems that there is also a verification benefit as well with BP+
-
Lyza
selsta yep updater works fine in 0.16.0.2 now
