Wow. Thanks for responding!
-
noobie_noob[m]
I’m not so familiar with any of this.

I need help with very fundamental things before I move into the whole cryptocurrency space. What do you recommend?

Well, it all started with Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace, who made the first analytical engine...
-
noobie_noob[m]
I’m not a very good target for scammers because I’m not looking to get rich quick. I am not looking into this to make money. I’m more interested in the ideological side of it. Supporting privacy, decentralization, open sourced projects, etc.

monerouser1144
Also
localmonero.co/knowledge posted several interesting (for me, as a newcomer) articles recently.
-
noobie_noob[m]
<monerouser1144 "Also
localmonero.co/know"> Very helpful. Thank you. I am not at all a coder, btw.
-
noobie_noob[m]
Though, I am having an immense appreciation for open source coders these days. The world needs more problem solvers and less trouble makers, IMO.
-
Mochi101
monerouser1144, did you even look at that link?
-
Mochi101
I didn't know localmonero.com used that as a 404 page
-
Mochi101
:D
-
monerouser1144
@Mochi101 what do you mean, it works for me ...
-
selsta
monerouser1144 your link works
-
monerouser1144
Ah, the 404 of the truncated link LOL
-
Mochi101
ahh yeah.. truncated
-
Mochi101
sorry
-
noobie_noob[m]
The tutorials and local pages will be helpful and I will move forward on reading up and learning as much as I can. But, in the meantime, I have a few fundamental questions on how to get started.
-
noobie_noob[m]
1. Is there any way I can meet up with a live person who can help me?
-
Mochi101
noobie_noob[m], where are you?
-
noobie_noob[m]
2. How do I get unbanked and get out of the usual social media? I want out... completely.

-
noobie_noob[m]
I might not be in the right group for this. That’s why I asked for recommendations. Monero IS the cryptocurrency that I want to support. But, to me, it’s a small part of a much bigger picture.

@noobie_noob[m] I'm not sure if IRC is the best channel for such discussions. You'll probably have better response at Reddit.

I assume that all binaries other than monero-wallet-gui (those under /extras and monerod) are the same with the ones released a week ago?

Thx, I've downloaded the Linux version and verified gpg sig and sha256 hash. Everything looks well.

Question that I couldn't find the answer in the article collections that I've posted above: Do Monero addresses get created like the new Bitcoin "Hierarchical Deterministic" style (to avoid reuse)? Or is the underlying design completely different?
-
monerouser1144
The monero-wallet-cli refers to "Electrum seed" but it's unclear what it means.
-
dEBRUYNE
They function similarly insofar as they are linked to a 'master' private key
-
dEBRUYNE
monerouser1144: It simply refers to the 25 word mnemonic seed, which is basically a representation of the private spend key in words
-
monerouser1144
I mean I know it refers to the HD seed design used by the Electrum Bitcoin wallet. But does it mean that under the hood the monero wallet creates dozens of addresses? (for receiving and change)
-
noobie_noob[m]
moneromooo: how can I pm you?
-
monerouser1144
Is it correct to assume that Monero's 25 word "Electrum" seed creates a "Hierarchical Deterministic" wallet (with potentially 1000s addresses) ? Or is CryptoNote entirely different?
-
Inge-
a few billion accounts, each with a few billioin addresses
-
monerouser1144
@Inge- I'm asking because I haven't encountered the term "Hierarchical Deterministic" wallet in the Monero literature (or maybe I missed it).
-
Inge-
well, I think the bitcoin version is likely different than the monero version, so probably not meaningful to use the same name?
-
Inge-
But for all intents and purposes - yes, Monero provides a large amount of deterministic subaddresses, probably more than you can use in a lifetime.
-
Inge-
and if you recreate the wallet based on the seed mnemonic, you have access to the same addresses again
-
Mochi101
Do you recycle addresses to save the environment Inge- ?
-
Inge-
Recycle addresses to save Ciphertrace?
-
Mochi101
hahaha
-
noobie_noob[m]
Sorry if this question is too basic... how can I send someone a pm?

Double clicking on someone's name would be sensible UI maybe your client does that noobie_noob[m]?

monero-wallet-cli checks every 12 hours IIRC. There's a fair chance the GUI does the same.
