ruied have you considered multisig using the Trezor and another wallet? If you have a 2-of-3, one being a cold wallet that you never open on an online computer, one being the Trezor and one being your other setup if the Trezor gets damaged you can restore your cold wallet "fraction" from paper backup, and the Trezor wallet alone cannot spend any

XMR so it's protected *somewhat* from a vulnerability that, say, broadcasts the private key directly from the device

Test thoroughly in stagenet first of course.

Adreik, no, going to check that. I saw multisig on monero-client-cli but didn't try it... I've read that we should be careful on that, when we activate the multisig in the wallet there seems to be no coming back in that wallet to a 'standard' transaction mode...

Yes, once you've sent to a multisig wallet I don't think it can be converted to a non-multisig spendable output

But I *am* fairly sure it should generate the same wallet if you later restore from keys and import the same multisig info from the other wallets.

ruied: biggest diff is that with a Hw wallet, your mnemonic and private key would NEVER be on a device connected to the Internet. And at least with Ledger you can easily go from Ledger mnemonic -> monero private key WITHOUT a usable Hw wallet if you need to in the future (would assume that is possible with trezor too, but check)

So you aren't really dependent on the hardware or the company in order to regain access to your funds

Adreik: Ledger uses bip39 and then there is some derivation path. I have no idea of the details, but Ledger made a python program for it: github.com/LedgerHQ/app-monero/tree/master/tools/python

Does Trezor *not* use BIP39 too?

well, I don't know if there is any common standard from bip39 -> monero mnemonic, so I would double-check. might need a trezor-specific tool.

ap0calypse I don't remember having any problems with compiling it. Just install all dependencies and then cmake/make. But it only works smooth on 64-bit OS with 64-bit userland.

Kraken is in the US I think ? Reputable exchange (though it's "papers, please" exchange).

If wanting to go from USD to XMR, Kraken and BITTREX are the only options ATM, but are both solid.

If going from BTC to XMR you have lots of options, like TradeOgre, Bisq, etc

Also LocalMonero for USD to XMR wmfinck

Yes, I almost joined Kracken but liked Exodus better at the time. I have a Gemini account where I can exchange BTC for fiat, but right now I cannot exchange monero for anything... so that is why I came to ask here.
