jbg
during sync my daemon started logging a lot of this "E get_pruned_transaction_weight does not support older range proof types" (I am using --prune-blockchain and --sync-pruned-blocks). is it something to worry about?
-
jbg
it seems to have stopped syncing after logging that line 30 or so times
-
expensivebead
How's it going everyone?
-
jbg
is it safe to relaunch the daemon without --sync-pruned-blocks if i have synced it to ~80% with that option?
-
jbg
i am trying to find a way to make progress, since it is stuck at "E get_pruned_transaction_weight does not support older range proof types" repeating over and over in the logs and no sync progress
-
selsta
jbg: which version are you using?
-
expensivebead
Can anyone send me some btc?
-
Adreik
Did a hard wallet rescan after discovering that "incoming_transfers uses" has been added in a relatively recent version (I assume, because for older outputs there was nothing).
-
Adreik
Interestingly I have an output that's from November '18 that hasn't been a decoy ring member for anyone else's transaction yet, while every other output has been a decoy at least three times including an output I received only a few weeks or so ago (which has ~8 rings to it's name).
-
Adreik
This seems anomalous; is there anyway other than hard blockchain re-scanning to check for transactions that reference that output?
-
Adreik
Is it possible that the output has simply been "unlucky"?
-
jbg
selsta: latest (v0.16.0.1)
-
selsta
jbg: can you report on github?
-
jbg
ok
-
jbg
selsta: any comment on whether it's OK to remove --sync-pruned-blocks to try to keep syncing?
-
jbg
from my understanding it seems like it *should* be OK
-
selsta
moneromooo is interested in users having issues with --sync-pruned-blocks so a report would be appreciated
-
selsta
I think you can remove it
-
jbg
ok, i'll try removing it, and will file an issue on github
-
jbg
with it removed, it's continuing happily with the sync
-
Adreik
How exactly does one use tx-extra?
-
Adreik
Suppose you want to write "0000000000000000" in tx_extra; do you first type in "integrated_address 0000000000000000" in your wallet, then send something to that?
-
selsta
Adreik: no
-
selsta
you have to use a custom wallet
-
selsta
encrypted payment IDs will show in tx_extra but the info will be encrypted
-
Adreik
How come this is not in the default wallet?
-
Mochi101
What do you want to do with it Adreik ?
-
Adreik
Just play around with it on testnet lol
-
Mochi101
Awhile back I looked into using it too.
-
Mochi101
But... no.
-
expensivebead
Can anyone spot me some BTC?
-
Mochi101
.kickban expensivebead
-
Mochi101
What're you begging for BTC for expensivebead ?
-
Mochi101
This is an XMR channel, have some respect.
-
expensivebead
I want some, I'll take XMR too. :D
-
charolastra
will you suck dick for it?
-
expensivebead
Will you give it?
-
expensivebead
Yeah, now give it.
-
charolastra
no(,) homo
-
expensivebead
Same, give.
-
jbg
expensivebead: yeah sure, i can send you some BTC. just send it to me first, and i'll send it right back to you
-
expensivebead
Hahaha, *sigh.
-
expensivebead
K I sent you 1 BTC.
-
expensivebead
Send it back.
-
jbg
first i need to do kyc, send me all your personal information
-
visualshock
Is it possible to make the blockchain smaller? I have pruned it, and it is now around 30gb.
-
selsta
no
-
selsta
not at the moment
-
jbg
30gb is pretty reasonable innit
-
jbg
i just deployed several major blockchains in the last few days and was pleasantly surprised at the pruned size of monero's
-
Mochi101
yeap
-
jbg
selsta: are you a monero dev, or just a particularly helpful irc lurker?
-
visualshock
30gb aint that bad, just need to upgrade my vps.
-
jbg
if your host charges you more than $almost_nothing for 30gb, you need a new host :)
-
selsta
jbg: I do contribute but not the main dev
-
jbg
selsta: sure. i have a pet issue:
monero-project/monero #5979
-
jbg
i'm an experienced developer and would be happy to do the legwork to implement this
-
jbg
but would need some light mentoring on the monero codebase
-
jbg
would you be interested, or do you know someone who might be?
-
expensivebead
GitHub is open source?
-
jbg
i know of several monero nodes that currently can only make outbound connections because of this issue
-
jbg
so implementing it would also be beneficial for the network
-
selsta
jbg: I’m not really familiar with the network related code
-
jbg
ok
-
selsta
you can ask in #monero-dev maybe
-
jbg
ah, thanks for that, i will
-
expensivebead
Why do you guys operate it?
-
selsta
I usually look at the existing code for e.g. p2p-external-port and then try to understand it
-
jbg
expensivebead: what are you talking about?
-
selsta
but can’t estimate how difficult your idea is
-
expensivebead
Meaning, help maintain the nodes or blocks?
-
expensivebead
Right?
-
jbg
selsta: yeah, i can do that. but half an hour with someone who wrote that code or knows it well, can replace half a day of spelunking through the codebase :)
-
expensivebead
Sorry I'm a newbie.
-
selsta
expensivebead: nodes improve the network health and also your privacy
-
visualshock
What happened to pay for rpc? Still a thing?
-
jbg
expensivebead: i work at a company that runs a service that accepts monero, so we're running a node anyway. helping the network doesn't really cost us more, and helps us since we accept monero
-
expensivebead
What I'd RPC?
-
Mochi101
--p2p-bind-ip
-
selsta
visualshock: yes but not adopted yet
-
jbg
Mochi101: that's the bind IP, but if the IP is not local, you can't use it
-
expensivebead
What is rpc?
-
expensivebead
What company is that!
-
expensivebead
?
-
jbg
our deployment is inside kubernetes. outbound traffic will get SNAT'd to a different IP than other peers should connect to
-
jbg
so something similar to the bitcoind externalip setting is needed
-
Mochi101
ah yes, I see now
-
jbg
expensivebead: Remote Procedure Call. it's a general term, not a company name
-
jbg
(i honestly can't tell if you're trolling at this point!)
-
expensivebead
Ah.
-
expensivebead
I am not trolling!
-
jbg
ok :)
-
Mochi101
Maybe look into --public-node
-
expensivebead
If I wanted to get a bit of cryptocurrency with nothing, what would I have to do?
-
azy
work
-
asymptotically
what would you do if you wanted to get some dollars or euros?
-
Mochi101
It doesn't do what you want.
-
asymptotically
jbg: do you dedupe your stored blockchains in any way, if e.g. you were running multiple monero nodes?
-
Mochi101
But it's responsible for advertising the node on the P2P network jbg
-
azy
expensivebead, what do you have to offer?
-
Mochi101
spam
-
expensivebead
I guess time and myself.
-
Mochi101
maybe it's only for wallets though...mmm
-
moneromooo
Should be fairly easy to add. If you're looking for a guide for doing it yourself:
-
jbg
asymptotically: we're only running one monero node
-
moneromooo
- Add the same option as --external-p2p-port (if the name's right).
-
moneromooo
- Add a field for an IP in the handshake structure, in one of src/{p2p,protocol}/*defs.h
-
jbg
for HA purposes, the backing storage is replicated, and kubernetes will relaunch it on another node in the cluster if the node it's running on fails
-
moneromooo
- Write it there when creating your own handshake packet
-
moneromooo
- when you receive a handshake, check whether an IP is set in that packet, and use that IP instead of the incoming IP if so
-
expensivebead
azy: what is usually offered?
-
moneromooo
- use that IP to add to the peer list instead of always the incoming IP
-
moneromooo
That should be it.
-
jbg
moneromooo: thanks! this is great. i'll save your comments and hopefully get time to work on this next week, and will send a PR
-
moneromooo
Thanks
-
azy
you could sell stuff on openbazaar
-
jbg
expensivebead: crypto isn't really a magic alternative economy, the whole value-for-value thing works the same way
-
expensivebead
That might work.
-
jbg
figure out something you have that other people (ideally people who already have crypto) might want
-
expensivebead
Okay.
-
expensivebead
Who has something I can do for some Bitcoin or monero?
-
asymptotically
jbg: cool :) ive been meaning to write a custom resource to deploy a wallet as an excuse to learn how to write a controller but i haven't gotten round to it yet
-
expensivebead
Do you guys use miners?
-
jbg
asymptotically: that's a nice idea; honestly i haven't gotten much into the custom resources, but if you need to deploy many similar things it seems like a great way to abstract it
-
jbg
we're just using a statefulset
-
jbg
expensivebead: even here in asia electricity is too expensive for me for that to be worth it
-
jbg
if i knew someone who ran a power station, maybe
-
expensivebead
Are you Asian?
-
jbg
not as far as I know, why do you ask?
-
expensivebead
Because you're in Asia.
-
jbg
fair
-
expensivebead
Which part?
-
jbg
the sunny part with nice beaches
-
expensivebead
Cool cool.
-
jbg
what do you do to earn your local currency, expensivebead?
-
expensivebead
I usually help out at a mechanics shop.
-
expensivebead
These days it's through the stimulus check.
-
expensivebead
This last one did not come in for me.
-
expensivebead
So I'm struggling right now.
-
jbg
so your regular requests for someone to give you bitcoin/monero are not really about bitcoin/monero am i right?
-
jbg
i'm guessing you don't pay your bills in crypto, so you really need USD/whatever
-
expensivebead
Yeah.
-
jbg
so look, being totally brutally honest, crypto circles are probably some of the worst places to beg
-
expensivebead
I was thinking about learning about it to enrich my life somehow.
-
jbg
i don't judge you at all for doing so, i've been there, but people in #monero or #bitcoin are scam-hardened and are just not going to give you a cent
-
jbg
basically anything else you could try is probably going to work better
-
jbg
by all means learn about crypto to enrich your life somehow
-
jbg
but if you need money to pay the rent, you're barking up the wrong tree
-
expensivebead
Sigh can anyone spare anything before I leave?
-
jbg
asking your worst enemy for a loan is going to work better than asking for a handout on IRC, trust me
-
expensivebead
At least IRC is still cool af.
-
jbg
yep!
-
Desoetie
2nd tranch also arrived
