If I get time I’ll throw the latest monero on my pi 4 4gb and see how much it hashes :)
-
hyc
waste of time

hyc
pis have no hardware AES support

Man that k12 tho...

Hi guys. Is there any place on IRC to discuss about new technology idea on Monero, like building things for Monero? I've been surfing through all channels but haven't found a suitable place to drop my idea
-
rbrunner
Well, if it's no problem to go public with your idea, seems to me you can hardly go wrong with trying just here. Worst case you won't get attention or feedback and then can go on to try other places like a GitHub issue or a Reddit post on /r/Monero
-
manifest
#monero-dev would seem like the place for that on IRC, or just here like rbrunner stated
-
rbrunner
Yeah, if it's a dev idea. Not sure what "building things for Monero" might mean :)
-
manifest
or monero-dev is more specifically about the protocol and official wallet/daemon etc, if you want to build around monero this might be a better place yep
-
Guest84819
thanks guys. I found the #monero-dev. will definitely post there and post on a Github issue. To be more exact, what we are building a layer 2 privacy chain learning Monero's RingSig. We have built successfully the trustless bridge to Ethereum, now are thinking of building it to Monero. I just want to pitch this idea to the community here to get
-
Guest84819
feedback and if the community is interested, we can prioritize building it.
-
rbrunner
Interesting. What's layer 1 to your layer 2?
-
Guest84819
Our idea can be sketched briefly like there is an trustless bridge connecting Monero chain (layer 1) to our chain (layer 2) and XMR assets on Monero Chain is turned into the assets on our chain. You can go through our idea here
incognito.org/t/trustless-custodian…-to-cryptocurrency-custodianship/84 for a quick
-
Guest84819
glance. Will definitely write a piece on here so that everyone can drop feedback.

Just received "Mastering Monero" from SerHack. First Edition

Isn’t monero 18.4 mil supply?
-
newyearday
no is unlimited
-
newyearday
There will be a total of 18.4 million XMR in circulation. Its mining will go until May 31, 2022, and after that, 0.3 XMR per minute will be fed into the system continuously
-
newyearday
so unlimited
-
jwinterm
newyearday, not exactly unlimited
-
jwinterm
you could integrate the emission curve out to the heat death of the universe and calculate a final supply
-
jwinterm
at any finite time in the future there is a known and finite supply
-
newyearday
0.3 XMR per minute will be fed into the system continuously
-
jwinterm
right, a limited quantity per unit time
-
newyearday
after may 2022
-
jwinterm
which would only result in unlimited monero at time=infinity
-
jwinterm
so not unlimited
-
newyearday
this will be forever so practically means unlimited
-
newyearday
if someone dont like 0.3 /minute is other issue
-
riceandbeans
What would happen if two miners in two different areas both submitted the correct answer at the exact same time to the network?
-
riceandbeans
Also, why can't any mining be done after May 31, 2022?
-
jwinterm
riceandbeans, one of the two miners blocks would ultimately be accepted by the network and built on top of
-
jwinterm
it would have to do with latency and propagation
-
jwinterm
if half the miners started building on one block and half the miners started building on the other block, one of those two halves will win and then the rest of the miners would join them
-
jwinterm
also there is mining after 2022, it's just that the block reward stops decreasing and stays fixed
-
riceandbeans
And the inflationary value of XMR at that point would offset the reduced reward or how does that work?
-
riceandbeans
June 1, 2022, why do I keep mining? ( not that my mining operation now yields a ton or anything, just curious )
-
jwinterm
yea, you still get a block reward plus tx fees
-
jwinterm
in bitcoin after 2140 there is only tx fees
-
jwinterm
it's just a different approach
-
bigslim[m]
So really only 18.4 mil is supply. Tail emissions is just emissions from the 18.4
-
bigslim[m]
You aren’t “creating” new coins
-
newyearday
block reward means new coins
-
newyearday
or not?
-
asymptotically
bigslim[m]: wut?
-
rbrunner
Yes, the so-called "tail" emission *is* emission - the total number of coins continues to grow. Infinite Monero, so panic :)

if i want to anonimize my btc, can i use monero to get this done? and how would i go about this?
-
manifest
a lot of factors / how tinfoilhat you are but in a nutshell just exchange it to xmr without giving out any personal information
-
notdave
manifest: yes i am not so tinfoilhat
-
notdave
but i just bought some btc with my bank account, now want at least some separation between that and the btc/monero i will use online
-
asymptotically
notdave: you could trade a small amount each day to exchanges that don't require verification, like tradeogre or binance
-
asymptotically
could also try some otc trading in #monero-otc or on localmonero.co
-
notdave
ok let me write that down ;)
-
notdave
i am new to this all, so all info is new to me
-
notdave
when i open monero gui, it says: wallet is not connected to daemon
-
notdave
do i need to configure something for that?
-
asymptotically
you need to run the daemon that downloads all of the blocks and talks to all the other monero people, or you can use somebody else's node (with reduced privacy)
-
asymptotically
i think
moneroworld.com has a guide on using a remote node
-
notdave
ok
-
notdave
aymptotically: if i check settings in the gui app, there is no such remote node option to configure
-
asymptotically
notdave: maybe it got moved around and the moneroworld site hasn't updated to show wherever it is now :( - someone else here will know
-
anicow

I am positively surprised. The "Mastering Monero" book is not so bad. I like chapter 5 "A deep dive into Monero & cryptography". A high information density for that price.
-
d4ndo[m]
It needs a second edition - though - to add RandomX.
-
hyc
I think it's already on its 2nd edition
-
hyc
or maybe that's zero to monero I'm thinking of
-
selsta
yep ZtM is 2nd edition
-
d4ndo[m]
Oh wow. That looks good. ZtM 2.0.0. LaTeX?
-
selsta

d4ndo[m]
I like the serif type, although it shows its strength on paper. Serifs lead the eye while reading.
-
d4ndo[m]
Unless you have a 4k Monitor- thern serif types are cool to read on a monitor.
