how did my node connect to the address 193.83.49.0 ? did that node (of another coin w/ monero version 60) spoof its address or something?

what does monero wallet synchronize with a remote node? i thought the whole point of the remote node was that doesn't need to be done
-
KiloLima
kxsl wallet sync is different to node sync.
-
KiloLima
wallet sync is uploading the wallet with block data
-
KiloLima
node sync is downloading all blocks, if you have node sync, you still have to do wallet sync
-
moneromooo
The whole point of a remote node is to run *your* node on a more powerful/online machine.
-
moneromooo
The whole point of using a stranger's node rather than your own is to reduce your security and privacy.
-
moneromooo
Nevertheless, Monero is a private currency, so the node doesn't have your keys and doesn't know which txes are for your wallet, so hte wallet gets the txes and checks.
-
moneromooo
That's like about 5% to 10% of the total chain size I think. Very roughly.
-
moneromooo
But by doing that you are surrendering your freedom to that stranger, if it's not your own node running remote.
-
moneromooo
Software exists (mymonero) that does that computation server side, if you share your secret view key with it.
-
kxsl
yeah, it says it's synchronizing wallet blocks. that's what the 1gb data.mdb file is for?
-
moneromooo
As the "secret" part implies, it should be your node, unless you want to accept what the node tells you without checking.
-
moneromooo
data.mdb is the blockchain. If you have one, you're running your own node.
-
moneromooo
1 GB means it's just a start one though. Barely synced yet.
-
moneromooo
There's also a "bootstrap" mode where you use a stranger's node while you sync. Could be you're using that.
-
moneromooo
When the chain has finished syncing, it'll switch to your own node.
-
kxsl
i dont want to sync the whole thing or run a node on this computer. it says it's waiting for the daemon synchronization to finish
-
moneromooo
Are you using the GUI ?
-
kxsl
yes
-
moneromooo
It should have asked you what you wanted to do when you started it.
-
moneromooo
What did you choose ?
-
moneromooo
I think it boils down to "run my own", "surrender without a fight" and "bootstrap".
-
kxsl
i dont remember. i updated from 0.14. that was working fine and I had a local wallet. when I started using 0.15, it said the daemon wasn't running, so i clicked start. here i am
-
moneromooo
Ah, that will most likely run a local node. Explaining the 1 GB data.mdb.
-
moneromooo
So if you really don't want that, kill the process. Thre might be a stop button in the GUI, not sure.
-
kxsl
i don't need to run the background daemon at all?
-
moneromooo
If you surrender to a stranger's node's claim about the network, no. If you want full security, yes. If you want the sweet spot bootstrap mode, yes, and it'll use the stranger's node until your node is up to date.
-
moneromooo
So in your case, I think you don't need it.
-
moneromooo
If you can't run a node on that machine but have a VPS, it's best to run a node on the vps and use that. At least you can be sure the stranger's isn't lying to you.
-
kxsl
correct, something like that. i'll have my own node on another server. i need the wallet on my laptop so i can take it with me.
