Do you have to have a wallet unlocked to know what the balance of the address would be?

I would think that since the ledger has to say who was paid what that logically you would not.

In an effort to nix the X Y argument, I want to write something to check my wallet balance and based on current rate of XMR tell me what I would have in USD periodically.

I understand you'd usually unlock in order to use it, I just kind of want to be able to write something to know what I currently have in XMR and what it would potentially be in USD in an automated fashion

This is because your view key is used to determine if funds are destined for you (and btw, amounts in transactions on Monero are encrypted). If you want, you can export your private view key to monitor if transactions are destined for you. This allows you to monitor

transactions while keeping your spending key safe.

If I've made any txs in or out, outside of the mining pool, then the value is entirely inaccurate.

I started to download with a raspberry pi and it took really long: 3 hours: 11% sync time - Now I started to use a MacBook and it is after 5 minutes at 3%

Why the big time difference ?

Syncing monerod is resource intensive. MacBook is obviously way more powerful than a Raspberry Pi.

You can start the daemon like this: `./monerod --bootstrap-daemon-address auto`

It will still sync but while it’s syncing it will use a remote daemon so that you don’t have to wait.
