it is a change in monerod p2p protocol, but does not require consensus changes (backwards compatible with existing p2p protocol)

so you would have to re-start monerod itsef with the changes, updating just the wallet binary won't do anything

You were in contact with Derek. Would a CCS be the next step while telling Derek that they can start with the review?

I think the consensus from todays -dev meeting was that we do that audit and that 1 audit (code and math) is enough, unless MRL thinks otherwise.
