Maybe it was more profitable because every PC has a CPU, but not every PC has a powerful enough GPU. Also, block reward was much higher before

might be luck fluctuation

60 slow blocks + 60 very fast blocks = 120 normal blocks on average

or maybe someone fired 1 GH/s solo for an hour or so
