I know that the MGs and CLSAG differ between type 4 and 5, but when building a txn, how de we determine which type to use?

Why are you here? For the tech? Then you should be off at Zcash instead of trying to con newbies into a coin that doesn't work. For the money? If I have a curve point X = A + B

where we're using a common basepoint for each curve point

ie X=xG

it's computationally infeasible to compute x, even with A and B right

it surely doesn't matter that you know an additive combination that gets you X

Correct, from the argument that if you just have X=xG, you can trivially calculate Y=X-1, ending up in your original case.

(A=1, B=X-1)

But you have no way of knowing b and a even for A=1, B=X-1 right
