Happy to help; the more nodes the better (⌒▽⌒ゞ
-
awhoa[m]
is it better to not prune a node
-
awhoa[m]
or rather are there downsides to pruning when running a node? does it prevent some users from using the node?
-
awhoa[m]
and what's the difference between enabling vs. disabling RPC?
-
xmrscott[m]1
This explains RPC pretty concisely, but tl;dr you only really need it if you're building something that needs to ask a node things:
monero.stackexchange.com/questions/…is-the-monero-wallet-rpc-deamon-rpc
-
xmrscott[m]1
As for pruning: "There are no privacy or security downsides when using a pruned node." (
getmonero.org/resources/moneropedia/pruning.html)
-
awhoa[m]
ahh both links are perfect, thank s
-
awhoa[m]
so i think i'll disable RPC and enable pruning
-
midipoet
xmrscott[m]1: the pruned node guide nor the blog post give the actual command for creating a pruned node, do they?
-
awhoa[m]
looks like --prune-blockchain
-
awhoa[m]
but yeah it would be a nice addition to both the blog post and the SO post to include the command and a link to the docs
-
midipoet
Also, can you call the command mid-sync, or does it have to be called either right at the start of sync or on a complete chain only?

folks (and in particular sgp_) i see you keep advertising the wrong url for the matrix instance. It's `moenro.social`, not `matrix.monero.social`. I pointed it out already many times but i see you are still advertising the wrong URL.
-
ErCiccione
to be clear: matrix.monero.social won't work at all.
-
Mumuks[m]
ErCiccione: you've misspelled monero.social , plus matrix.monero.social could be redirected
-
ErCiccione
i did. Apologies. That's not that easy. The accounts have monero.social addresses the rooms have monero.social addresses. A redirect would be completely useless and misleading.
-
ErCiccione
maybe better to correct the wrong guides/suggestions instead :)
-
ErCiccione
The two shouldn't be mixed and the correct url should be advertised instead.
-
ErCiccione
also, note that changing address for matrix equals creating an entire new homeserver. That would add to the confusion.
-
Mumuks[m]
No, I meant only to redirect the HTML page at matrix.monero.social to monero.social, I think I misunderstood what you are pointing
-
ErCiccione
but why? matrix.monero.social is a subdomain that don't exist. The solution is to simply stop advertising the wrong domain. That's it.
-
Mumuks[m]
ErCiccione: matrix.monero.social works when you input it to the matrix client
-
Mumuks[m]
I did not try with monero.social as server in the matrix cliemt
-
ErCiccione
I don't understand. Your account is a matrix.org one. What are you referring to? The matrix.monero.social address is correctly not recognized, monero.social is
-
ErCiccione
recognized
-
Mumuks[m]
ErCiccione: I have also a monero.social account. To create that account I told the matrix client I wanted to connect to matrix.monero.social . That gave me a mumuks:monero.social account.
-
Mumuks[m]
I have not tested if telling the matrix client I want to connect to the monero.social server works
-
ErCiccione
So. Looks like there is a problem in the configuration of the server. I pointed out this too, but it's still there.
-
ErCiccione
the only correct address should be `monero.social`, but for some reason `matrix.monero.social` is partially configured as well:
-
ErCiccione
-
ErCiccione
-
ErCiccione
This is not itself a problem, but it becomes one when the matrix.monero.social address is advertised.
-
ErCiccione
as i said. The solution for this is to stop advertising the URL`matrix.monero.social` and suggest the correct one: `monero.social`.
-
ErCiccione
The only correct address is the one used for accounts and rooms (monero.social)
-
Mumuks[m]
ErCiccione: if I understand you correctly, pointing the matrix client to monero.social should work the same and should be the way to access the server?
-
ErCiccione
more or less, but it's not the same. It will work correctly instead of incorrectly. The fact that matrix.monero.social is probably an accident or what's left of a test. Some things might work, but others will be broken. The only good address is `monero.social`.
-
Mumuks[m]
Ok

afaik, the `matrix` part in front of the `monero.social` is unnecessary. Matrix is automatically looking for instances of matrix server, given a domain name.
-
mechanic41turk[m
that's why, when I was creating my account on my homeserver, I didn't put `matrix` in front of its domain name.
-

sgp_ and others: guys, the only correct domain is monero.social. Subdomains could work, as i said, but the canonical address is the one used by the accounts (`@username:monero.social`). This is all well explained in the synapse specs.
-
ErCiccione
if you want to keep suggesting people to use `matrix.monero.social`, your choice. I'm telling you: that address is wrong. I also posted the link to the federation test, which failed for matrix.monero.social and succeeded for monero.social. More than that i cannot do.
-
ErCiccione
<vikrants[m] "ima_bcc36ad.jpeg"> This is showing the identity server, not the homeserver. They are two different things.
-
ErCiccione
actually, did you also install an identity server? That's unlikely (it's not in the synapse package and it's discouraged by matrix people)
-
ErCiccione
because if you didn't adding that url in the identity server field won't do anything.
-
ErCiccione
Mine shows as yours. <- It does not. U
-
ErCiccione
You don't have an identity server setup and that's fine.

<ErCiccione "if you want to keep suggesting p"> Please show me how to make it work in element on iPhone without the subdomain. See the screenshots above where it fails if I only use monero.social.

-
ErCiccione
if monero.social is not working for some reason there is some problem with the setup of synapse. If matrix.monero.social, works, it shouldn't.

sethsimmons
<xmrscott[m]1 "sethsimmons: A suggestion from "> I believe I already link to the docs and the command is in the commands I give, but I'll take a look and see if I can make it more explicit.
-
rehrar
So it should be that to log in you have to go to matrix.monero.social, but the usernames themselves show a :monero.social path
-
rehrar
This was in the docs for a configuration setting specifically because they realized people would probably use subdomains for the actual server, so as not to take up an entire domain, but still want it to appear as if it's just from that domain so it's not so long to type.
-
ErCiccione
if people cannot reliably use it, there is something wrong in the configuration. I, for example, have set it up using `monero.social`.
-
ErCiccione
rehrar: do you have a link to these docs?
-
rehrar
looking, I'll ask pigeons
-
pigeons
ErCiccione: can you summarizr or PM me the issue
-
zach[m]1
Just FYI I had the same problem. On Reddit this server was advertised as matrix.Monero.social and it messed me up. I am new to matrix and it took me over 30 minutes + some troubleshooting with others to realize I should only enter Monero.social.
-
pigeons
enter monero.social where? as the homeserver?
-
pigeons
OK I think I see what people are saying. Rehrar and I are expecting the homeserver to be matrix.monero.social yet it appears that actually using that isn't working for people and instead monero.social is
-
zach[m]1
Yes. In my Element client I wanted to browse the rooms on the Monero.social server and I kept entering the subdomain since it was the URL advertised.
-
pigeons
Is that the issue?
-
pigeons
OK thanks, I will look into this
-
mechanic41turk[m
pigeons: ErCiccione also argues that new users signing up using the monero.social matrix server, should NOT input matrix.monero.social as the address of their homeserver.
-
rehrar
I mean ultimately we want it to be monero.social
-
mechanic41turk[m
He says that new users signing up on the monero.social matrix server should put in ONLY monero.social to their homeserver address.
-
rehrar
But I don't want to use the DNS to take that whole thing. I may want ti use it for something else.
-
mechanic41turk[m
This is during the signing up process.
-
rehrar
So I want the things to point to the subdomain matrix.monero.social
-
rehrar
But I want the names to appear as monero.social
-
rehrar
And this what we have right now. If there is a better way to do it let me know.
-
pigeons
Yes the matrix services for monero.social will be delegated to the matrix.monero.social server. Although we had tested with a few different machines and domains and configurations and it seems like maybe we have something that needs to be corrected.
-
mechanic41turk[m
rehrar: you are right, this is what you guys have with your matrix homeserver. A few people in here have reported that they have inputted matrix.monero.social when they created their accounts. However, on the matrix client element interface, I can see their homeserver shown as `:monero.social`
-
pigeons
that is how it will appear because of the delegation
-
pigeons
But I do take note of some of the comments here, especially the fact that things need to be clear and work as expected, so I'm going to verify things
-
rehrar[m]
What we have now is how I would like to keep it btw. At least in terms of the end results.
-
rehrar[m]
I don't want to people to see @rehrar:matrix.monero.social
-
rehrar[m]
and I also don't want to use the entire monero.social domain for this matrix server.
-
mechanic41turk[m
<rehrar[m] "I don't want to people to see @r"> You are not displayed like that, don't worry.
-
rehrar[m]
I realize that, yes. What we have currently is the way I want it to be, but if we can achieve that through a cleaner backend then we can do that.
-
rehrar[m]
People will probably need to sign up with matrix.monero.social, but some are saying they can do the sign up with just monero.social.
-
rehrar[m]
Can I have confirmation that someone signed up with just monero.social
-
mechanic41turk[m
<rehrar[m] "People will probably need to sig"> yes
-
rehrar[m]
I know I signed up with matrix.monero.social
-
rehrar[m]
so I know that works. If someone else signed up with monero.social, then that means maybe both should work?

-

rehrar[m]
Cool. So you should be able to sign up with either. And if one gives you an error for some reason, then try the other. :P
-
pigeons
matrix.monero.social can you verify that works as a homeserver for registration?
-
-
yun[m]

-
rehrar[m]

-
pigeons
If someone uses "monero.social, the client will look up this record to find the homeserver

-
rehrar[m]
which points to matrix.monero.social, so it's covered, yeah pigeons?
-
pigeons
So far this appears to be working as expected yes

chatting about it with pigeons. Will be probably better to drop matrix.monero.social and use only monero.social. He is testing stuff at the moment. I may disconnect soon.

and with "drop" i mean that should not be advertised. The expected behaviour should make people should make people use only `monero.social`, but under the hood everything is on `matrix.monero.social`.
