seems to me that both the fact that it is a default part of the protocol, so the user assumes only privacy and doesn't care about mixing explicitly

AND the fact that it ISN'T a mixing of your funds with someone elses funds, it is just making it hard to tell which funds were spent - YOUR funds were the ones *actually* spent - are both important factors
