Reddit often shadowbans users who then try to post in /r/Monero. Mods have the option of approving the posts of users reddit has shadowbanned. Moderators are now faced with a couple different paths to take.

We can approve the posts, but unfortunately many of the shadow banned users are trying to circumvent bans or build karma to get past our filters (and reddit detected the pattern). We could inform the users they are shadowbanned, but if they are actually subversive, this just tells them to make a new account and try harder next time

We've currently settled on a tentative policy to ignore comments from shadowbanned users unless they explicitly ask, in which case we inform them of the shadowban

The reasoning being that people who ask about it aren't aware of how to check (and are probably a false positive)

what causes someone to get shadowbanned? an automated system or something manual from a mod?

It's touchy when they ask for support, or make a semi relevant comment, etc.
