sgp_, u think its possible to pull together some other crypto communities to fund development of a p2p radio communications network?

-
gingeropolous
be great to see organizations like zcash put their money where their mouth is re: decentralization
-
gingeropolous
or hell, any of these projects
-
gingeropolous
at least bitcoin has satellites.... but i've never understood how thats decentralized. but i guess good in the way of best or whatever
-
gingeropolous
that proposal needs some reworking re: concrete milestones and deliverables... but now that PoW is taken care of, I think the internet is the next piece of the puzzle that needs fixing with monero
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> gingeropolous Blockstream satellites are not decentralized. They lease bandwidth from satellites owned by other companies like this one:
intelsatgeneral.com/satellite-bandwidth-services
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> Several possible points of failure
-
sarang
Is it multiple companies? That could provide useful redundancy
-
binaryFate
Afaik it's not meant to provide decentralization but censorship resistance (to sync and receive live blocks), for people in regions/countries cut from the internet or under censored networks
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> It is, but that’s for different regions of the world. One region (like the Americas) only has one satellite/ company that they can connect to
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> Locha Mesh is using their satellites too, it would be interesting to experiment with these satellites and make Monero work through them.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> One of the cool things about Locha Mesh is it doesn’t HAVE to use their satellites though. It can be it’s own network entirely.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> I agree the proposal needs reworking. I tried coaching him with the lessons I learned from my original proposal that had to rework, but he wasn’t having it. Hopefully now after seeing the feedback on GitLab he’ll be more open to it.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> Would be great to see other projects supporting this too.
-
gingeropolous
well.... " but he wasn’t having it." doesn't bode well ....
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> I’m exaggerating. He said he’d like to see the comments from his initial draft first.

gingeropolous: I added a comment

anyone have access to the old FFS ? be good to get the hardware wallet FFS as template for this guy
-
gingeropolous
rehrar i presume
-
ErCiccione[m]
fwiw my main concern was about the big amount of money asked for a unreasonable amount of months, i would approve a 3 months proposal at 3.5k a months (assuming clear milestones are provided). I left a comment
-
gingeropolous
when was the hardware wallet developed?
-
sgp_
ErCiccione[m]: thanks for the clarification
-
sgp_
you are totally correct that not many people will use it though
-
sgp_
so in some ways it's difficult for me to wrap my head around sometimes
-
sgp_
but I come back to considering it a sort of necessary expense
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> I like to think of this as an insurance plan. Hopefully would never need to use it, but would be essential under certain circumstances and is worth paying for ahead of time.
-
gingeropolous
i dunno. IMO, as long as cryptocurrencies are entirely dependent on the existing internet, the whole thing is an experiment just waiting to fail
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmrhaelan> Also I would use it because I’m a radio enthusiast
-
sgp_
insurance is a good way to look at it
-
binaryFate
If I had to donate to the mesh thing, I'd like more practical specific milestones. And if we have to arbitrate the delivery of funds or not, we also need more practical specific milestones, otherwise we are not in a position to properly protect donators AND duly reward proposer.
-
sgp_
it also seems like the people behind it are honestly interested and involved, so bringing more people in is a huge plus
-
sgp_
binaryFate: yes, more detailed plans are required in my opinion
-
gingeropolous
yeah, i think the "detailed plans" component is well understood by randy at this point
-
gingeropolous
man, i was surfing through the old FFS.... there was a lot of stuff done
-
gingeropolous
the existing CCS not having that history is a shame
-
sgp_
gingeropolous: it can always be transferred over (but not the comments, at least directly)
-
sgp_
worth preserving that history
