I'm having a handfull of issues with the new GUI release, guess I'm trying to see if they're known issues or just me. When starting the GUI I am told that the daemon didn't start, but then it gets started and connected. Second is that I'm currently I'm sitting here looking at an open wallet with 1837 wallet blocks remaining. That number is not
-
lyza
moving, hasn't moved for several minutes, even though the daemon says it's synchronized. Another thing I'm noticing is that it takes an unusually long amount of time to close a wallet, over 20 seconds
-
lyza
closing the wallet where the wallet blocks weren't scanning and re-opening it seems to have resolved the issue -- it finished scanning in like 2 seconds
-
selsta
lyza: Are you using simple modeb
-
selsta
?*
-
lyza
no, it's in advanced mode
-
lyza
simple mode would be a remote daemon, yeah? I've got monerod running on my PC
-
selsta
ok, can you try starting monerod manually before opening thr GUI?
-
selsta
the*
-
selsta
some users seem to have problems with the daemon not starting automatically
-
lyza
sure. GUI is working and connected to the daemon rn though. it's like... it takes longer than the GUI expects it to, or something
-
selsta
We have had more reports with daemon starting issues this release, we will try to reproduce and fix it.
-
selsta
Also can you try restarting your computer and trying again?
-
lyza
sure I'll be back in a minute. one more thing to mention before I go: I have log level set to 4 in the GUI but the daemon log isn't printing to the GUI
-
lyza
if I type 'status' then it gives me info, though
-
selsta
log is usually printed to the console and monero-wallet-gui.log
-
lyza
-
lyza
it's not supposed to show the log here?
-
lyza
I mean I know where the log file is located so it's not a huge deal.... it just looks like it's supposed to be displayed there in the GUI
-
lyza
ok brb then
-
selsta
does restarting help with your daemon issue?
-
lyza
currently waiting for Daemon to start. I will go ahead and say that earlier this morning when I was having the issue it was right after a fresh reboot.
-
lyza
just got 'daemon failed to start' error
-
selsta
:/
-
selsta
ok seems to be a bug then
-
selsta
can you PM me the monero-wallet-gui.log?
-
lyza
now it says it's connected and the daemon is sync'd
-
lyza
without me restarting the GUI or doing anything. sure, can you remind me where the GUI log is in Windows? AppData?
-
lyza
actually this is really weird I don't see monerod.exe in the task manager even though the GUI says it's connected to the daemon
-
selsta

dEBRUYNE
lyza: Do you have a bootstrap node specified on the settings page?
-
lyza
dEBRUYNE that setting is blank
-
xiphon
dEBRUYNE: lyza: monerod take too long to start
-
xiphon
sent a PR increasing daemon start timeout to 120s
-
xiphon
lyza: it seems it takes ~90 seconds to start a daemon on your machine while GUI has a timeout of 60 seconds
-
lyza
xiphon that was my conclusion as well. is it known why the daemon is now taking longer to start up, though?
-
xiphon
nope, didn't investigate this

So, how is everybody's Friday going?! Apologies if you are already into Saturday.
-
needmonero90
More involved than most Fridays. Moderation is ramping up in response to the fork.

When is the fork party going to happen?
-
KiloLima
What time does fork occur?
-
nioc
block 1978433
-
nioc
around 1800UTC which is when the coffee chat is scheduled for
-
xmrscott[m]
And we're at 1977833
-
nioc
type status into your daemon and it will tell you
-
nioc
there is also a countdown timer online somewhere
-
xmrscott[m]
So 600 blocks, or roughly 1200 minutes
-
xmrscott[m]
(Or 20 hours)
-
KiloLima
0.8 days in status
-
KiloLima
so tomorrow?
-
nioc
yes
-
xmrscott[m]
Yes, nioc is correct, basically standard Coffee Chat time amsunigly enough
-
KiloLima
I hope the scheduled execution goes to plan.
-
KiloLima
is Coffee Chat time on Jitsi or here?
-
xmrscott[m]
(2019/11/30 ~11am MST)
-
KiloLima
11am Mountain Time (US)?
-
KiloLima
so 10AM Pacific?
-
xmrscott[m]
Correct, I think technically it will actually be like 10:58 if I'm thinking this correctly
-
KiloLima
0958 PST
-
nioc
variance
-
xmrscott[m]
Or 9:58am Pacific
-
nioc
better than the 4am it was last time
-
xmrscott[m]
Indeed, at least for US folk
-
nioc
east coast
-
nioc
I was up for it cause.....
-
needmonero90
4am east coast is 1am US
-
nioc
I dunno
-
needmonero90
There was no coffee chat then
-
needmonero90
Ever
-
xmrscott[m]
Also roughly 8pm South Africa time, so not too strenuous for at least binary and fluffy
-
xmrscott[m]
*Artic and fluffy
-
nioc
did I say coffee chat?
-
needmonero90
Someone did, looked like you were responding.
-
nioc
the coffee chat was for the anniversary
-
nioc
mebbe I was but that was so long ago I forgot
-
KiloLima
is SA time the same as Portgual and Ireland/UK?
-
xmrscott[m]
Not stressful for Howard either (6pm Ireland)
-
needmonero90
Should be 1pm ish eastern US nioc

Does coffee flavored vaping count as coffee?
-
needmonero90
Does it have caffeine?
-
needmonero90
If so, tell me the brand, vapable suspended caffeine solution sounds like a life changer
-
nioc
so tea = coffee?
-
nioc
great
-
needmonero90
That's the biggest issue with society these days. You can't smoke coffee.
-
» needmonero90 is probably joking. Probably.
-
KiloLima
Just nicotine and CBD.
-
KiloLima
no caffeine
-
KiloLima
yet caffeine and nicotine sounds like a better match for working
-
KiloLima
so if anyone does have coffee flavored caffeine vapor juice, do say

needmonero90
Thoughts? :)
-
midipoet
I would imagine the vast majority of products/contracts on exchanges don't touch the chain.
-
midipoet
So in a way the whole game is 'synthetic'
-
midipoet
Maybe i am missing the point though
-
needmonero90
I added an addition midipoet
-
needmonero90
The difference here is reserves
-
needmonero90
If I'm long on a position for 1xmr, then in theory, the exchange has 1xmr in reserves
-
needmonero90
With derivatives there is no Monero involved
-
needmonero90
You deposit btc, someone else deposits btc, and you both make a bet (using btc as backing) about the future price of Monero
-
needmonero90
No Monero was ever involved in that trade and if the price spikes suddenly, the person who bet the wrong way can experience >100% losses
-
needmonero90
No other system, even leveraged trading, allows the system to enter a state of fractional reserve
-
needmonero90
Derivatives do
-
needmonero90
If the community is going to make a decision on whether trading derivatives is 'trading monero', sooner is way better than later.
-
needmonero90
I'm honestly leaning towards no, and that derivatives shouldn't be on our list of pairs/exchanges. But I expect the community would be pissed at me if I took a hard line stance.
-
needmonero90
This is kind of a big decision lol
-
midipoet
I am stuck thinking about the implications of fractional gambling
-
needmonero90
It's not the implications that bother me, as much as the fact that literally no Monero ever changes hands, it's not trading monero
-
needmonero90
There are no Monero stored, no Monero transferred, it's just btc or fiat changing hands
-
needmonero90
I mean. The implications bother me for sure.
-
needmonero90
But that will lead into conspiracy theory territory, which is why I'm avoiding it
-
needmonero90
That's a different discussion lol
-
needmonero90
(that is, futures being used to depress the price of assets by shorting endless paper into the books)
-
needmonero90
Like. If someone made an eth contract that let you trade derivative Monero, but you only use eth and the eth chain, would that be allowed?
-
needmonero90
How about derivatives denominated in (shitcoin of the day)?
-
needmonero90
At some point I think the line needs to be drawn, and my gut is telling me 'you need to be trading actual Monero somewhere' is that line
-
needmonero90
But the conversation needs to be had
-
midipoet
I would wait for the atomic swap schnizle
-
needmonero90
Exchanges are advertising Monero derivatives.
-
needmonero90
Today, even.
-
needmonero90
Which is why I'm bringing this up
-
midipoet
Yeah, I saw it earlier
-
needmonero90
Waiting for atomic swaps is too late, the conversation needs to be had now
