I got a dumb question
-
fluffydonkey[m]
The monero block-time is 2 minutes. Why is that so?
-
fluffydonkey[m]
Why can't it be 10 secons?
-
fluffydonkey[m]

-

it *is* possible, but what do you achieve?
-
kloinka[m]
coz processing, distributing and storage of "all them pesky blocks"!
-
fluffydonkey[m]
<gingeropolous "it *is* possible, but what do yo"> Faster transactions, mostly. I'd make monero useful for coffee-shop type of a setting

-
gingeropolous
fluffydonkey[m], monero's already useful for coffee-shop re: time.
-
gingeropolous
if your gonna try and double spend your 5$ latte , well... you're bored.
-
gingeropolous
you don't need even 1 confirmation for that

Pixy
hi, is there any chance of an ARM compatible binary package for monero being put on the AUR, or alternatively a -git version?
-
xmrdog
!seen moneromooo
-
hyc
Pixy: AUR is Arch *User* Repository. If you want it, put it there yourself.
-
hyc
But what's wrong with the ARM binaries that are already on getmonero.org download page?
-
xmrdog
hey guys. what's the primary difference between the branch that v0.17.1.9 is on, and the master branch? there are quite a few divergences.
-
xmrdog
is master currently stable for production and fully 0.17.1.9 compatible?
-
xmrdog

any way to restore a wallet from just the wallet and wallet.keys files?
-
dEBRUYNE
supus: Is this a normal wallet or a Ledger wallet?
-
supus
normal wallet
-
dEBRUYNE
Try rebooting your system
-
supus
It's an old wallet I found lying around. No monero software is running rn
-
waselox
hello
-
p1tt1
waselox: Hi
-
Lyza
<supus> not 100% sure how the software knows when a wallet is open in another wallet, but I know it's not done at the OS level so it's proooobably in the cache file. try renaming 'wallet' to 'wallet.old'
-
Lyza
if you do this you'll have to rescan the blockchain for your transactions, but I think will prolly work for you
-
Lyza
wallet.keys holds the important secret, wallet is just cache stuff, not essential
-
supus
that worked, thanks
-
Lyza
yayy! no problem :)

let's see if past me left me a gift :)

hi all. is the master branch software safe for production use and fully compatible with v0.17.1.9 ?
-
xmrdog
commit cb70ae945 to be precise
-
sethsimmons
No reason to use master for production, just use the latest tag and build from that.
-
xmrdog
okay
-
sethsimmons
Master would probably be fine but the latest tag will be the latest and most widely compatible/tested code.
-
xmrdog
thanks!

what is a good choice to buy monero? I am starting with this link, but there are more options that I can choose from:
cryptocoinsociety.com/guides/how-to-buy-monero
-
raecarruth
yes, kraken is good
-
raecarruth
binance is another option, especially since they don't demand kyc for smaller withdrawal amounts
-
kulak
what is kyc?
-
supus
can also use tradeogre for no KYC crypto-to-monero
-
raecarruth
also graviex
-
raecarruth
know your customer
-
supus
kulak: know your customer. It's where the exchange has to verify your identity
-
raecarruth
it's anti money laundering crap
-
raecarruth
cos, we're all crooks
-
ndorf
KYC = Know Your Customer, aka you are required to dox yourself to the exchange.
-
raecarruth
looking to fleece the government...
-
raecarruth
-
raecarruth
lesser known option
-
raecarruth
but people i trust say that they're reliable
-
supus
kulak: usually you have to upload a picture of your identity documents or verify them in a live videochat. Some exchanges also ask for additional documents such as proof of residence, occupancy etc.
-
mmxxx[m]
volume is kinda low on graviex though
-
supus
another option would be to buy them at a crypto ATM. Similar to regular ATMs where you can buy / sell crypto. Some require your phone number
-
supus
check out coinatmradar.com for an overview of ATMs in your area
-
raecarruth
how common are xmr atms....
-
supus
don't know ... I have access to several in my area (given a bit of a drive though)
-
raecarruth
you're in the EU
-
raecarruth
?
-
supus
yes
-
raecarruth
figures
-
supus
non-xmr ATMs are useful as well though. Just buy litecoin or similar and exchange to monero via changenow / morphtoken etc.
-
supus
once you're in crypto it's pretty easy to get xmr
-
raecarruth
yep, that is true
-
pyu
a list of exchanges,

raecarruth
thanks pyu

XMRGONE
oday I exchanged $120 from BTC to XMR and it was sent to my sub address. After resyncing over 50 times and resetting the wallet creation height I have still not received the transaction. XMRChain and ExploreMonero both confirm the transaction was sent to the correct sub address, and the transaction is now at 55 confirms.
-
XMRGONE
T*
-
XMRGONE
I did the exchange into Exodus
-
XMRGONE
Does anyone have any advice on what can be done...?
-
sech1
Try to restore the wallet from seed words and use restore height 0
-
nioc
exodus wallet 0_o
-
sech1
Also, if you use many subaddresses there make sure that you generate all of them before syncing
-
XMRGONE
This is the second time I have lost funds from Exodus and TBH I will never trust it again. Mind you it was only $120 but I'm poor and that's a really shitty loss. I tried importing the private key into the actual Monero GUI and started from 0 but I don't think that will transfer the funds from the sub address correct? I will also try to restore the
-
XMRGONE
wallet from the seed words but will that keep the sub address?
-
ndorf
yes it will, as long as exodus generated the subaddress in the standard way
-
u29601mg6ba93j[m
XMRGONE: the advice from @sech1 will work. make sure you read both points restore from height 0 and generating subaddresses first
-
XMRGONE
Does it matter if I restore in the Monero GUI, or should I try to restore on a new exodus install. I started the restore from seed on the GUI a couple hours ago 340000 blocks left.
-
ndorf
i would use the GUI.
-
XMRGONE
Alrighty, fingers crossed. Thank you all for the help and I'll let you know how it goes!
-
ndorf
XMRGONE: do you have 200 or more subaddresses in this wallet?
-
XMRGONE
No, just the one. Exodus allows you to add a subaddress and as soon as it receives a transaction it generates a new one
-
ndorf
gotcha. then it should Just Work(tm)
-
XMRGONE
Awesome I'll keep in touch the GUI should finish in around an hour or two
-
ndorf
if you know for sure the block height of the first transaction, you can use that as the restore height, instead of 0
-
ndorf
but it won't work if you get it wrong, so if you're less than 100% sure it's probably better to just wait
-
ndorf
(it has to be less than or equal, which is why 0 always works)
-
waselox
hello

for coin that has 2 decimal places and fee is 0.01 per byte running with latest v14 why fee/transaction is 14.33 (too much)
