Barbelo[m]
how big of an entity is the sybil attacker?
-
nos411
selsta: 130 known. It is likely that there are more that are more hidden to continue spying.
-
strike
How do we deal with the sybil attack?
-
strike
-
nos411
<hyc> we really have to do better than whack-a-mole ...
-
nos411
<moneromooo> ...Why we fight to keep a private comms system with tor <-- Maybe look into Loopix?
-
nos411
"researchers say Loopix is resistant to Sybil attacks, currently one of Tor's biggest problems."
-
nos411
-
gingeropolous
huh, in trying to read about loopix came across miranda:
eprint.iacr.org/2017/1000.pdf
-
gingeropolous
i dunno about loopix: "The Loopix architecture deliberately relies on estab-lished providers to connect to and authenticate end-users.This architecture brings a number of potential benefits, such as resistance to Sybil attacks,"
-
gingeropolous
that design seems incompatible with monero off the cuff, but I could be missing something, considering i just ctrl-f'd for sybil
-
gingeropolous
i dunno if we can swap in "dandelion stem" with "mixes" in that miranda document
-
nioc
you want to solve the problems with permissionless p2p networks? centralize with permission !!
-
gingeropolous
badabing badaboom!
-
hyc
obtw you must each pay me $0.05 to establish a connection
-
hyc
for a permissionless network the nature of the problem is much like ASIC-resistance versus ASIC-proof
-
hyc
you can't prevent sybils from connecting. you can only make it expensive for them to do so.
-
nos411
Well regardless of the incompatibility the service provider architecture to a permissionless p2p network, so tossing out the supposed sybil resistance, it still seems to offer some interesting things with the Sphinx packets (which apparently LN uses) and Poisson mixing.
-
nos411
-
nos411
"the Poisson mixing technique that is based
-
nos411
on the independent delaying of messages, which makes
-
nos411
the timings of packets unlinkable" seems like that could be valuable in reducing metadata available to tie users to their transactions.

xmrmatterbridge
<chakravanti> So I'm having a major problem. Monero will reach all blocks remaining and sync, and then it'll go right back to waiting for two more items not synced. Fortunately it could see far enough I know I got my money and after sending money it; however, waits for the last block or two to be gathered before it goes back to two blocks remaining. it won't sync and i've never seen this before
-
xmrmatterbridge
<chakravanti> even more trouble, if I subscribe to a remote node, same problem >.>
-
xmrmatterbridge
<chakravanti> im half an hour late to sending money and nada >.>
-
xmrmatterbridge
<chakravanti> okay, well the remote node "works" but it clearly aint a solution persuade users to use remote nodes
-
nioc
chakravanti are you using the GUI or CLI
-
xmrmatterbridge
<chakravanti> gui
-
nioc
someone is playing games and running nodes that show 2 blocks ahead but don't actually give you any info
-
nioc
there is a fix coming maybe as early as tomorrow
-
nioc
CLI currently works
-
nioc
that's why some remote nodes work
-
nioc
if they updated to 0.17.1.5

man, this shutdown object really doesn't want a timer
-
roguetechca
is it normal to have zero incoming tor connections (and only transient outgoing tor connections lasting ~5 minutes) a few days after configuring --anonymous-inbound and --tx-proxy ? i have gone over the configuration a number of times and can't find any issues, so i assume this is happening because there are currently few working anonymous nodes on the network and my node is having difficulty finding them/being found
-
moneromooo
Others have reported short I2P connection lifetime, and tor/i2p are handled very similarly. So it's not just you.
-
selsta
roguetechca: do you have multiple out tor peers?
-
selsta
my problem is usually that I have way more in peers than out peers
-
selsta
which tor version are you using?
-
roguetechca
there are usually 3-5 out peers and 0 in
-
roguetechca
tor version is 0.4.3.7
-
selsta
should be fine
-
selsta
would wait 24h and check again, if you still have no inbound tor peers maybe post your tor address and I can try connecting to it
-
roguetechca
sounds good, i'll let you know

Jae[m]
How much does the blockchain weighs now?
-
endor00[m]
A little over 100GB unpruned
-
Jae[m]
And pruned?
-
lza_menace
~30 GB
-
Jae[m]
Oh nice
-
Jae[m]
Is mining available on a pruned version?
-
moneromooo
Yes, it can do everything except access full versions of most historical txes.
-
Jae[m]
Oh nice
-
Jae[m]
How do I do that?
-
endor00[m]
Side q: what does a pruned node do when a client/wallet requests data for a pruned tx? Does it pull the data from another node, or does it say "data not available"? How is that scenario handled?
-
moneromooo
Run monerod with --prune-blockchain. However, it's very inefficient if you're already synced, so sync from scratch in that case.
-
Jae[m]
OK!
-
Jae[m]
Thanks for the infos :)
-
moneromooo
It errors out, assume the request was for a full tx.
-
Jae[m]
Oh the sync is really fast, nice
-
moneromooo
Not much data when it started. It'll be a lot sloewr near the end.
-
Jae[m]
Also, do you guys know if some kind of library exists for automated Monero payments?
-
moneromooo
Look at "monero ecosystem" on github, might be something you like there.
-
Jae[m]
Ok, thanks!
-
kinghat[m]
"Thank you for your patience, I have reached out to our Legal and team and have been advised that these activities are explicitly forbidden on certain classes of services including VPS and Public Cloud. For all services, OVHcloud also reservers the right to proceed with the immediate suspension without notice of any service on which there is a public service Proxy, IRC, VPN or TOR which is available free of charge or for a

kinghat[m]
fee, and for which OVHcloud has knowledge of its fraudulent or illegal misuse."
-
sethsimmons
:D
-
sethsimmons
Thanks for reaching out kinghat
-
hyc
good job
-
kinghat[m]
its just a coincidence, im looking for a vps closer to home that i can host these services from because my own bandwidth cap is shit. i use hetzner but the latency is terrible. they, on the other hand, were able to give me one word answer "yes".
-
hyc
oh, you haven't reported the IPs in the ban list?
-
selsta
I would be surprised if OVH takes anything down
-
kinghat[m]
no. just a coincidence as i was trying to find hosts in the states that will let me host those services. ive been inquiring with them before i move anything over for obvious reasons.
-
kinghat[m]
i can follow up in the email about the issue though as im already in an "elevated" state with their support.
-
roguetechca
maybe try evolution host, they even accept payment in monero and seem to have loose policies wrt what you can run on their instances
-
kinghat[m]
im also cheap. so was looking at these small VPS that dont have a lot of hardware but tons of bandwidth. i pay like $3/m with hetzner.
-
hyc
kinghat[m]: sounds like a followup is worth doing
-
kinghat[m]
seth maybe you could give me a few sentences to send back to them about whats going on so i dont speak out of place?
-
kinghat[m]
or anyone
-
Guest64865
What happening with Monero?
-
kinghat[m]
also, would it be bad to have them banned on the host level before we see if the mitigations in the next release work or not?
-
roguetechca
i would think running monerod with --ban-list is just as effective as host level blocking
-
roguetechca
fixed my syncing issue
-
hyc
afaik they have moved on ti digitalocean so they may not even be active on OVH now
-
kinghat[m]
ah ok
-
viperperidot[m]
I am running the --ban-list flag and still having the 2 blocks behind issue
-
viperperidot[m]
If I reboot monerod it seems to fix it for a little bit
-
selsta
viperperidot[m]: please post the output of "sync_info"
-
selsta
also try updating the block list to the latest version
-
selsta
we will have a new release out in the next days that will mitigate this issue, but in the meantime we have to use the ban list (or transact using the CLI)
-
Jae[m]
Do Monero is looking for contributors?
-
Jae[m]
* IS Monero is looking for contributors?
-
charuto
<Jae[m] "Do Monero is looking for contrib"> always
-
Jae[m]
nice
-
Jae[m]
what does it needs the most?
-
charuto
just dont expect to get funded by the community with no prior history of engagement and development within the community
-
charuto
it can happen, but it's not so common
-
Jae[m]
Why would I get to be funded?
-
Jae[m]
* Why would I want to be funded?
-
charuto
depends on your skillset and who you ask really.
-
charuto
if you feel like you are giving the project big contributions and spending a lot of time and effort into it then it's completely fair to ask the community to continue to crowdfund your work
-
charuto
and if the community agrees such can happen
-
charuto
but again, that's not what you should be thinking about when starting :P
-
Jae[m]
<charuto "but again, that's not what you s"> Agree
-
Jae[m]
I'm just looking to help something I like, not make profit
-
charuto
<Jae[m] "what does it needs the most?"> personally i think it'd be cool to have multisig implemented in the official gui wallet, not sure if anyone's working on that yet or not
-
Lyza
might be good for you to start hanging in #monero-dev if you're looking to get into coding stuff. or #monero-community works on outreach and documentation and stuff
-
Lyza
Easy to use multisig would be a killer feature but I think that's no small task
-
charuto
yes, Jae check out #freenode_#monero-dev:matrix.org and #monero-research-lab:matrix.org
