how can I tell monero-blockchain-import where to safe the blockchain to?

Why the insane drop in crypto prices? Coronavirus causing whales to take a massive dump?
-
yanmaani
you weren't kidding holy shit
-
yanmaani
Yes, crypto is a risk-on asset. Not digital gold at all.
-
cannon-c[m]
I think gold is risker. Gold can be faked, it can be stolen by looters or government at checkpoints. It might also be lost in a disaster.
-
cannon-c[m]
I also cannot send gold electronically
-
cannon-c[m]
I cannot encrypt gold and make backups of it. Maybe people just do not realize how crypto has some advantages and gold still the mainstream safe haven asset?
-
cannon-c[m]
now gold does have advantages with silver that it requires no electricity or network. They both have advantages and disadvantages
-
yanmaani
And?
-
yanmaani
Crypto is something people buy as "spice" for the portfolio.
-
cannon-c[m]
I just dont understand why crypto dropping. If anything to do with pandemic fears, why gold rising and crypto not?
-
Quotes
-
yanmaani
The idea isn't that it will make an almost guaranteed 2% per year, or a probable 7% a year.
-
cannon-c[m]
lol anything below 10% bad a year
-
yanmaani
The idea is that it's a very risky "10x or nothing" investment; you put 10% of your portfolio into crypto, and either it doubles or goes down by 10%.
-
cannon-c[m]
need 10% just to keep up with devaluation of fiat
-
yanmaani
Against this backdrop: When the stock market goes down and people want to cut their risks, they sell off the riskiest stuff first.
-
yanmaani
So first goes crypto, then stocks, then risky bonds, then cash, then gold.
-
yanmaani
Something like that.
-
cannon-c[m]
then bullets and beans the new currency right?
-
yanmaani
10% increase per year (before inflation) is not reliably possible, to put it nicely.
-
yanmaani
no, bullets is an equally stupid idea
-
yanmaani
let's put it bluntly: if shit hits the fan, what are you going to do with them?
-
yanmaani
shoot people, right?
-
cannon-c[m]
cause not scarce? But would be scarce in shtf
-
yanmaani
and all else equal, this is 50/50
-
cannon-c[m]
<yanmaani "shoot people, right?"> looters, yes
-
yanmaani
so, either you die, and you have no need for bullets
-
yanmaani
Or you survive, but the other guy dies. You lose some bullets shooting him, but you take his spare ammo.
-
yanmaani
So it's trivial to see why ammo would not be scarce in a shtf scenario.
-
cannon-c[m]
that would be a messy world
-
yanmaani
Anyway, people are not preparint for wholesale civilizational collapse.
-
yanmaani
They are preparing for the once in a decade financial crisis
-
yanmaani
1980 had a recession, 1990 had a recession, 2001 had a recession, 2008 had a recession
-
yanmaani
with 2020 we are right on the mark.
-
yanmaani
So, essentially the issue is this: crypto has never been tried in a financial crisis scenario before. It came out after GFC, remember? "Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks"
-
cannon-c[m]
true
-
yanmaani
there is no evidence for why it should be "digital gold"; the price movement is driven by retail speculators (gamblers)
-
cannon-c[m]
this may be a good experiement to see how crypto does
-
yanmaani
ehh
-
yanmaani
I mean sure. But the idea that "number go up" is a good value proposition is crude...
-
Feuermagier[PC]
is the monero blocksize constant or increasing?
-
nioc
it is variable depending on demand
-
nioc
fees control how fast the blocksize increases beyond default settings
-
Feuermagier[PC]
cause the current blocks appear to take longer to download than the earlier ones
-
nioc
they are within default but they also have more txs lately
-
nioc
AIUI checkpoints help with initial syncing
-
nioc
they are added with every major release so any thing after the last release takes some more time
-
nioc
last major release was Nov 30, 2019
-
nioc
and SSD is way faster than HD
-
Feuermagier[PC]
sadly even wget-ting the blockchain to import it is cripplingly slow
-
Feuermagier[PC]
the server seems to limit the download speed after a while
-
Feuermagier[PC]
wish there was a .torrent for the montly chain
-
nioc
after last release with an SSD I was able to sync the entire BC in ~12hrs
-
Feuermagier[PC]
why is ssd so much faster?
-
nioc
just the way the info is read and written
-
nioc
sorry don't know details
-
Feuermagier[PC]
why is the info of the last block not simply kept in memory?
-
Feuermagier[PC]
ok
-
nioc
I imagine a HD will take at least 2 days
-
Feuermagier[PC]
running for 3: 70%
-
nioc
the best equipment can do it in 4 hrs and the worst up to a week
-
Feuermagier[PC]
that's why i'd prefer if there were a .torrent for it
-
Feuermagier[PC]
you could download and import
-
Feuermagier[PC]
i'm sure enough people would voluntarily seed
-
nioc
I believe someone did it with a very marginal system and it took weeks
-
Feuermagier[PC]
it's a raspberrypi here
-
nioc
but for that you need some settings incase to reduce the chance of corrupting the BC
-
Feuermagier[PC]
definitely qualifies as "marginal system"
-
nioc
cause if corrupted you need to start again o_O
-
Feuermagier[PC]
nioc, ofc you'd still check the blocks. i'm, assuming that you'd use the import-tool monero ships with
-
nioc
I have never used it
-
Feuermagier[PC]
it checks every block by default
-
nioc
I think there is a setting that turns off confirming the blocks so that you can download faster and then you check the blocks later
-
Feuermagier[PC]
haven't found that one yet
-
nioc
if downloading the chain
-
nioc
well people have definitely used rasp pi successfully
-
nioc
time for bed

<xmr-romine> > <rbrunner> I have a little Python script for sending 5 * 7 txs
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> Hello @rbrunner7 , is it possible to see this python script somewhere ?
-
xmrmatterbridge
<xmr-romine> (If not, no worry, I was just asking in case of). Thanks.
-
Feuermagier[PC]
Does someone have an alternate location to
downloads.getmonero.org/blockchain.raw ?
-
Feuermagier[PC]
The server eventually drops to 100kb/s speed
-
xmrmatterbridge
<rbrunner7> @xmr-romine : If I don't forget I will post it somewhere this evening UTC.
-
Feuermagier[PC]
or can someone here put the last 15gb of the chain into a file and upload it? - would be very thankful
-
Inge-
I'd suggest just synching normally. even with the download, the most time-consuming part is usually verifying it during import...
-
selsta
+1 for syncing normally
-
fluffypony
+1000 for syncing normally

is the monerotalk guy on here?
-
azy
youtu.be/FvcVsV5JHpE that was a nice listen
-
SerHack
new scam twitter account: @GiveawayMonero , it redirects to a phishing domain
-
Inge-
maybe it helps people to give away their monero - truthful advertising?
-
SerHack
damn, you're a genius Inge.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<rbrunner7> It's quite clever, it says "Only for Accounts that already have transactions" plus "We will be give to users who have 5 transactions history." and it might be it actually checks - I had no luck with a fresh random seed.
-
xmrmatterbridge
<rbrunner7> Or maybe it's dumb, harvests the seed and shows the error message to everyone ....
-
xmrmatterbridge
<rbrunner7> Yeah, how would it check for "no transactions" so fast, silly me.
