here is an example of a coin that came out of nowhere and is currently ranked higher than monero in marketcap
-
robbyd[m]
they have a big red Community button on the top of their website, that goes to their discord, which has 1000+ people online right now
-
robbyd[m]
IMO that is where we need to get to -- some small tweaks to better harness user interest
-
ErCiccione
robbyd i saw your issue and i will post a comment soon. I agree with some of your point and disagree with others

erciccione[m]: great, thank you. one thing I just thought up: if we got the monero discord server really cleaned up and into shape, and set up the relay with the IRC channels to it, how might you feel about having a "Join our Community" button or similar under that opening paragraph on the main page? That would a few of the other tweaks on the Hangouts page (IMO) and main page footer that I had listed there
-
robbyd[m]
unnecessary, and everything will ultimately relay back to IRC/matrix
-
robbyd[m]
(got toddler duty for awhile, so I might be slow to reply)

robbyd[m]: Do we necessarily need it to be relayed?
-
ErCiccione
Oh i forgot to answer. I'm not a fan of having discord relayed to be honest
-
ErCiccione
same for telegram, but i think we already list that somewhere
-
robbyd[m]
sure, I can see the concern. we could have discord be its own thing, and have a few community mods there to help people
-
dEBRUYNE
That would probably be best
-
robbyd[m]
what do you guys think about having the discord link be more prominently featured? most crypto users use discord over IRC (most probably don't even know what IRC is, and even I didn't know what matrix was until a few days ago, I admit)
-
robbyd[m]
we can foster a more "beginner" community over there, and the higher quality ones can filter into IRC when they are ready and sufficiently interested
-
ErCiccione
I disagree. We should show prominently open source, privacy-focused platform. Discord is none of the 2.
-
robbyd[m]
okay, what do you think about featuring the community engagement links/methods (e.g. twitter, FB, discord, matrix and others) more prominently on the site....in the page footer perhaps, or somewhere where it's not buried in a dropdown?
-
robbyd[m]
* okay, what do you think about featuring (all of) the community engagement links/methods (e.g. twitter, FB, discord, matrix and others) more prominently on the site....in the page footer perhaps, or somewhere where it's not buried in a dropdown?
-
ErCiccione
I will answer more extensively in the issue (not today, probably), but IMO adding social links at the bottom imply some kind of officiality (like the "official links of getmonero"). That's not the case. We used to list some freenode channel, but we removed that.
-
dEBRUYNE
We could just call them communities
-
dEBRUYNE
Put every notable on there, highlight the ones that are open source and privacy focused
-
ErCiccione
you mean instead of the Hangouts page?
-
dEBRUYNE
We could add a 'box' to the hangouts page
-
ErCiccione
i'm open to ideas
-
robbyd[m]
yeah, communities would be great - the site is just providing a list of established mediums/venues -- we can clearly denote which ones are "official/recommended"...let the visitors choose what they'd like
