ErCiccione[m]: do you think that the NiceHash mining guide should be removed? i don't think it's ever profitable to use it to mine monero
-
asymptotically
and they recently got """hacked""" and lost user funds
-
ErCiccione[m]
If it's still valid and makes sense to have iti would keep it, just to mention the possibility exists. Maybe we could add some updates to it.
-
ErCiccione[m]
I'm not very familiar with mining in general, so maybe somebody more informed about mining could have a stronger opinion
-
asymptotically
some of the links are broken, and it mentions CryptoNight/R instead of randomx. but other than that i think it's okay
-
asymptotically
it's almost the first mining guide's 3rd birthday lol. doesn't feel like i've been here for that long
-
ErCiccione[m]
Then IMO we can just fix what's broken and add a notice about profitability and security. Could you open an issue about it?
-
ErCiccione[m]
To me feels like have been here longer. Crypto really makes you age faster :P
-
ErCiccione[m]
Btw. Updating user guides and moneropedia entries is still a pain (you need to edit something like 16 files when touching a Moneropedia entry, which is crazy). I'm not working on that at the moment because Weblate could add markdown support soon. That would make things a lot easier for us and would expand the amount of stuff we can translate on weblate.
-
ErCiccione[m]
if md support doesn't get added fast enough, i will work on an alternative. I have 2 different ways we could go for, but both would change the present structure (of both user guides and moneropedia) quite a lot, so i'm waiting a bit before doing that.
-
asymptotically
should I hold off on rewriting some of the guides until then?
-
ErCiccione[m]
Writing it down because it's something we discussed time ago, but never gave an update after that.
-
ErCiccione[m]
asymptotically: No. In any case i don't think it's going to be something super quick. We should update the guide and i'm working on it in the last days
-
ErCiccione[m]
it's just going to be a bit more annoying than it could be.
-
ErCiccione[m]
but the updates are necessary
-
asymptotically
so I should copy the English file into all of the other language directories, and set translated to false?
-
ErCiccione[m]
If the guide is untranslated in the other languages, yes.
-
ErCiccione[m]
i have a PR that modify the versioning system and make it easier, would be good to have that reviewed and merged asap
-
ErCiccione[m]
so we avoid possible conflicts
-
ErCiccione[m]
-
asymptotically
nice. i'll try it locally and review it
-
ErCiccione[m]
Thank you :)
-
ErCiccione[m]
asymptotically: Please let me know if you plan to work on some issues (here or commenting on the issue), so i can assign it to you and we don't risk double works
-
asymptotically
ErCiccione[m]: i was planning on rewriting the pooled mining guide
-
asymptotically
any problems if i built my own pool list site and linked to it? :P the proposed one (miningpoolstats) is full of ads and trackers
-
ErCiccione[m]
I personally don't see any problem, but miningpoolstats is usually considered "trusted", so i don't know what other think about it
-
ErCiccione[m]
unless your pool list site is full of trackers :P
-
ErCiccione[m]
asymptotically: i'm assigning 1005 to you, let me know if something changes :)
-
ErCiccione[m]
fluffypony binaryfate: any opinion about
monero-project/monero-site #985 ?
-
sunnuc[m]
<ErCiccione[m] "I personally don't see any probl"> maybe just write something like 'many pool informations can be found by searching for 'monero mining pool' or so? without linking
-
binaryFate
Yes that's a good idea
-
binaryFate
I'll make a PR to replace address for general fund (44AFFq...)
-
ErCiccione[m]
sunnuc: mmh not sure, i see the benefits, but i think would be better to provide a link. At the end is not sensitive information, we just need to minimally trust the list.
-
ErCiccione[m]
Thanks binaryfate, will post a comment and assign the issue to you.
-
sunnuc[m]
<ErCiccione[m] "sunnuc: mmh not sure, i see the "> the list on miningpoolstats.stream is known to be legit and Revuo Issue seems to also use data from it - there are some ad-banners but not very much trackers. i think its good to link there, maybe note behind (ecternal link) oer so?
-
sunnuc[m]
miningpoolstats.stream (external link)
-
asymptotically
yeah i dont think there's anything really wrong with it :x. i should add both and also get m5m to update moneropools.com and we could have a nice little list :)
-
ErCiccione[m]
About the note. That's something i've been thinking about lately, but should be site-wide. I was thinking of having a script add a symbol for all external links. Something similar to how we link to moneropedia entries (and i thinking of changing that too)
-
ErCiccione[m]
i'm fine with having both
-
fluffypony
ok so we're just replacing the general fund address with a sub-address?
-
binaryFate
yeah. Same wallet anyway
-
fluffypony
100%
-
sunnuc[m]
<ErCiccione[m] "About the note. That's something"> nice, so somebody who just clicks without thinking would be probably less surprised landing on a page with banners
-
sunnuc[m]
<binaryFate "I'll make a PR to replace addres"> i was also thinking about to propose to make subaddress to standard in GUI (hide main-address behind advanced menu) - should i post again in Git?
-
ErCiccione[m]
Yeah post that on #monero-gui or open an issue on the gui repo.
-
sunnuc[m]
<ErCiccione[m] "Yeah post that on #monero-gui or"> #2923
-
sunnuc[m]
<binaryFate "I'll make a PR to replace addres"> I just want to mention that some people already reacted strange (reddit) by mentioning Tetraphobia or China - i would definitely suggest to avoid these terms and motivate the use of 8... addresses because of privacy reasons .
-
fluffypony
I thought 4 was unlucky and 8 is lucky?
-
moneromooo
In China ? 4 is associated with death, 8 with fortune.
-
fluffypony
yeah, so it's good that we're changing to an 8 address, then, unless I'm misunderstanding the Reddit stuff, sunnuc[m]
-
sunnuc[m]
Its good to Change to 8 but not good to mention the terms Tetraphobia and China in a public post about the Change
-
sunnuc[m]
Instead the Change should be made mainly because of privacy protecting reasons. The User can easy Change the address to avoid corelation
-
sunnuc[m]
Change the address easily each time giving a address out e.g.for different customers
-
sunnuc[m]
superstitiousness is a weak reason to Change, privacy and propagate changeing of address more often is a good reason
-
sunnuc[m]
+many in China are not supersttious, so not shed such a rumor is better
-
fluffypony
oh I agree - I didn't realise people were saying that it's being changed for superstitious reasons
-
fluffypony
so dumb
-
moneromooo
Don't say "dumb", it attracts melevolent bit spirits.
-
fluffypony
lol
-
pigeons
In British Columbia often the elevators don't have anything with a 4, so no 4, 14, 24. No 13, then some skip other stuff like 9 all for superstitions
-
fluffypony
wonder why they never switched to letters instead of numbers
-
fluffypony
"26 floors ought to be enough for anybody" - fluffypony, 2020

sunnuc[m]

-
ErCiccione[m]
I think it's more anecdotal, i don't think many really cared about it
-
sunnuc[m]

-
sunnuc[m]
The number 8 is viewed as such an auspicious number that even being assigned a number with several eights is considered very lucky.
-
sunnuc[m]
The number 4 (四, pinyin: sì; Cantonese Yale: sei) is considered an unlucky number in Chinese because it is nearly homophonous to the word "death
