Here's a somewhat-related question on personal preference: should references go before or after appendices?

I prefer after, so it's easy to find them

it's a publishing thing, it allows them to cut the appendix out for publishing online without disrupting the references

What's the reasoning behind that preference? I find it more annoying to find them when there could be a dozen appendix pages afterward

otherwise, you have appendix starting halfway through the page on page 21, and the references starting 1/3 of the way through the page on page 28

you know, it probably depends on the journal's rule

what are the formatting rules for the journal you intend to submit it to next?

Though with digital publishing, it's not like space is at a premium

For the IACR version, I'd personally suggest appendix -> refs for clarity

since they don't have page limits etc.
