64-core Threadripper will be even more memory-bound than 3950X. 64 cores and 4 memory channels vs 16 cores and 2 memory channels.
-
Inge-
32-core threadripper more sweet-spot-ish?
-
hyc
2000GB/s L1 cache sounds like an incredbile jump in perf
-

-
p3rL
i'll beat them all with my Xeon <3
-
tevador
the 24 core threadripper will probably top out around 25 KH/s and the 32- and 64-core parts won't offer much improvement over that
-
p3rL
which model
-
luigi1111w
sech1 is "memory-bound" bandwidth?
-
luigi1111w
and if so are the skylake-x cpus using quad channel in those tests?
-
tevador
no, not bandwidth, but MT/s (transactions per second)
-
tevador
if you read how DRAM works, you'll see that it takes some time to open/close the memory row, which limits how many random reads you can make per second
-
tevador
that's why overclocking the RAM won't help much, but tighter timings help

14KH/s @150 Watts at the wall
-
tevador
cool, 93 H/J
-
tevador
depends on the price, though
-
sech1
Regular PC components can also achieve this efficiency, but after lots and lots of tuning
-
sech1
and probably not at 14 KH/s
-
tevador
yeah, I tuned my 3700X to 95 H/J
-
tevador
3900X can probably do >100
-
sech1
Their custom BIOS probably has built-in tuned timings for RAM they use + fixed clock and voltages for CPU
-
tevador
but 14K @ 150W sounds like a good sweet spot
-
gingeropolous
uh oh, its an asic!
-
sech1
I always told 3900X is RandomX asic
-
sech1
this is just packaging
-
sech1
it even has "X" in the name!
-
gingeropolous
i knew you guys worked for amd
-
sech1
Where's my payroll then? Ehh?
-
gingeropolous
i dunno. your prolly gettin paid on MOENRO! SO WE"LL NEVER SEE IT
-
gingeropolous
man. it feels like we're about to witness the final battle after a long war.
-
gingeropolous
well no. shame on me. ive never seen war. internet, delete that statement.
-
tevador
7x7 inches sounds like a micro ITX board with pico PSU
-
sech1
these boards are not cheap
-
sech1
7x7 is mini-ITX
-
tevador
yeah, I meant mini itx
-
sech1
2 times the price of micro-ATX boards
-
tevador
they could probably sell this machine for $1000
-
tevador
so now we know the reason for the shortages of 3900Xs :P
-
tevador
btw it looks like the 10x faster share verification with RandomX will reduce the operating costs of pools, which is a good thing for decentralization
-
jtgrassie
^ yes

tevador: thanks
