selsta: it's useful since you can post your shortened GPG key and then anybody can copy and paste it unto recognized GPG keyservers to fully see the public key and do whatever they need with it...

MIT has one of those servers. See: pgp.mit.edu

aye lad, for when character limits are present e.g. on Twitter you could have your fingerprint there, that'd be ideally used as i explained prior.
