what exactly is the problem when `/transfer` monero-wallet-rpc returns an error about transaction being too large and needing to use `/transfer_split` ? does this mean the total size of the transaction in kilobytes is too large? or is it that the fee is too large?

also how does `/transfer_split` help? im a bit loss on how a large transaction is "split" into smaller ones

The former. It should be very rare nowadays unless you use a very large number of inputs.

ok thanks probably a result of the way im generating test transactions on this private net then

split works by sending only some inputs in a tx. Size used to be dominated by inputs before rct since you could have a lot of small value outputs due to denominations.
