Why are you here? For the tech? Then you should be off at Zcash instead of trying to con newbies into a coin that doesn't work. For the money? If you put your money in BTC or ETH you would have been better off. For the magical crypto friends? Monero leadership laughs from losers like that. Find yourself more healthy realationships that don't laugh at you when they steal your money.

Chainanalysis has a service that tracks Zcash but doesn't have one that tracks monero lolol

nioc: In theory, the "private" transaction functionality of Zcash shouldn't be trackable by Chainalysis, I think -- but I don't know for sure.
-
apotheon
I'm not at all surprised that someone offers a tracking service for the explicitly not-private Zcash transactions.

And by the way, I think we can successfully make Zcash too traceable for criminals like WannaCry, but still completely private & fungible.

you can't have it both ways.

what happened with kastelo HW project? I was casually reading Mastering Monero, and read that kastelo is a monero HW project.

However, their github seems abandoned. Is the project toast?

16:38 < mechanic41turk[m> you can't have it both ways.

I agree that seems to be the case, at least with regard to conditions that apply to the same transaction.
-

I think that, in principle, you can have it one way with one transaction and another way with another transaction, but not both ways with a single transaction, if transactions are the things we're talking about making private.

nioc: Oh, I take back what I said about Zcash, now that I have read the linked tweet -- assuming there isn't some extenuating circumstance in that case.
-
apotheon
The last time I saw that tweet, I supposed it was a case of someone using one of the non-private Zcash transactions because that's the default, not realizing that the default is not private.
-
nioc
the problem of not being private by default
-

If that case was actually about using a supposedly "private" transaction, though, my previous comment about private vs. non-private goes out the window.
-
apotheon
The problem of not being private by default is, indeed, that people will likely end up using non-private methods and assume they're private.

and makes the private ones stand out
-
apotheon
There is that.

I would think that provides more possibilities for simplifying tracking, solved by good opsec and some trickery. The big problem seems to be that, in a system that is not private by default, when you choose privacy you are much more likely to be caught when your opsec isn't perfect.

. . . and, of course: "Is it ever perfect?"

Yeah, that seems about right.
